Chapter 83 - Chapter 82: The Future Talk

It started with a question.

A simple question. From Lyra. At breakfast.

"So. What are you two actually doing? After?"

The table went quiet. Everyone looked at Jay. At Keifer.

Jay put down her fork. "We don't know yet."

"You have to know something. You submitted your forms."

"We submitted that we're staying together. Not where."

Mila leaned forward. "But you talked about it, right? You have plans?"

Jay and Keifer looked at each other.

"We've talked," Keifer said slowly. "But not... details."

Lyra's eyes went wide. "You haven't talked DETAILS? About your FUTURE? Together?"

"We've been busy," Jay said.

"Busy?"

"Principal stuff. Classes. The nightmares. Finding Elias." She counted on her fingers. "We've had things."

"THINGS are not an excuse for not planning your LIFE."

Daniel, from across the table, muttered: "Here we go."

That night, Jay and Keifer sat in his room. The future was finally in front of them. No distractions. No emergencies. Just them.

"Okay," Jay said. "Let's talk."

Keifer nodded. "Okay."

"You first."

"No, you."

"You're the Principal."

"I'm your boyfriend first."

She laughed. Nervous. "Fine. I'll go first." She took a breath. "I don't want to be far from my friends. From Mila. From Lyra and Adrian and Bella and Daniel. They're my family. I can't imagine not seeing them."

"Agreed."

"And I don't want to be somewhere cold. I've had enough cold."

"Agreed again."

"And I want to be somewhere I can do something. Help people. Like we did here. Fighting shadows. Protecting people. I want to keep doing that."

Keifer smiled. "You want to be a hero."

"I want to help."

"Same thing."

She looked at him. "Your turn."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "The Council offer is still open. They want me for leadership training. It's what I always wanted. To make real change. To protect magical communities. To be something more than my name."

"That's good."

"But it's in the capital. Far from here. Far from our friends."

"We could visit."

"It's a commitment. Years. And they want me to travel. To go where I'm needed."

Jay's heart tightened. "So you'd be gone a lot."

"Maybe. I don't know yet." He took her hand. "That's why I haven't said yes."

"Keifer..."

"If I take it, I'm choosing my career over being with you."

"You're choosing your future. That's not wrong."

"But it's choosing something without you."

She squeezed his hand. "What if I go with you?"

He blinked. "What?"

"Wherever you go. I go. We talked about this. We're together. That's the plan."

"Jay, you can't just follow me around. You have your own future."

"My future is with you. That's the whole point."

He pulled her close. "I love you."

"I love you too."

"But we need a real plan. Not just 'together.' Something that works for both of us."

She nodded against his chest. "So let's figure it out."

They stayed up all night.

Researching. Talking. Dreaming.

By morning, they had something. Not a complete plan. But a direction.

Keifer would talk to the Council. See if they could be flexible. Location. Schedule. Something that worked for both of them.

Jay would look into programs. Magical defense. Community protection. Things she could do anywhere.

They would find a place. Somewhere between their friends. Somewhere warm. Somewhere they could build something.

"Not perfect," Jay admitted as the sun rose.

"Nothing is perfect."

"This is pretty close."

He kissed her. "Yeah. It is."

Lyra demanded an update at breakfast.

"WELL?"

Jay smiled. "We have a plan."

"Details. NOW."

"Keifer's talking to the Council. I'm looking into defense programs. We're finding somewhere between here and everywhere else. Together."

Lyra stared. Then burst into tears.

"THAT'S THE MOST ROMANTIC THING I'VE EVER HEARD. YOU'RE BUILDING A LIFE. TOGETHER. WITH COMPROMISE AND COMMUNICATION AND LOVE."

Adrian was already writing. "Planned flexibility. Mutual support. Shared goals. This is relationship optimization at its finest."

Bella was sketching. "The sunrise. The planning. The hope. I need to capture this."

Mila hugged Jay. "I'm so proud of you."

Daniel nodded. "Not bad."

That night, Keifer wrote to the Council.

Not accepting. Not declining.

I have conditions. Let's talk.

Jay watched him seal the letter.

"Scared?" she asked.

"A little."

"Good. That means it matters."

He pulled her close. "Whatever happens, we figure it out. Together."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

The next morning, Lyra's whiteboard had been updated.

"Ready for you."
