Chapter 6 - RBE 3

Outer Council Hall of the Tian Sect — Evening

Tall pillars cast long shadows across the polished floor. The atmosphere was tense, heavy with unspoken pressure.

Tian Xu, elder of the Light Clan, stood firm despite the unease in his eyes. Across from him sat Di Tian Yi, calm and composed, his authority filling the hall like an invisible weight.

Tian Xu: "You summoned me with urgency, Sect Master. I hope this is not another decree disguised as discussion."

Di Tian Yi: folding his hands "Nothing so dramatic. A proposal has arrived from the Northern Plains… one that concerns your clan."

Tian Xu's brows tightened.

"My clan?"

Di Tian Yi: "Their prince have expressed interest in forming a marital alliance with the Tian Sect. Specifically… with Tian Ya."

The words struck like a sudden clap of thunder.

Tian Xu: voice rising "Marriage? Without consultation? Tian Ya is not a bargaining token to strengthen political ties!"

Di Tian Yi: "No one claims she is. This is an opportunity, not an order."

Tian Xu: "An opportunity forced under the shadow of power is still coercion."

He stepped forward, anger flashing in his eyes. "The Light Clan will not be cornered into surrendering its daughter for diplomacy."

Di Tian Yi did not flinch. His expression remained smooth, almost indifferent.

Di Tian Yi: "You misunderstand. Refusal is… within your rights. But understand the consequences of isolating the Northern Plains. Their favor is not easily earned twice."

Silence fell. Tian Xu clenched his fists, the fire in his gaze wavering as reality crept in. He could feel it — the imbalance of influence, the subtle pressure woven into every calm word. This was not merely a proposal; it was a test of resistance he could hardly afford.

Tian Xu: through gritted teeth "You speak of rights, yet the path you lay leaves little room to walk."

Di Tian Yi:"I speak of stability. Alliances secure the future of the sect. Emotions, however justified, do not."

Tian Xu turned away for a moment, his reflection trembling faintly on the polished floor. He knew the Light Clan's standing had weakened.

Resources were thinner, voices fewer. Anger alone could not shield Tian Ya from political storms.

After a long breath, he faced Di Tian Yi again — not defeated, but restrained.

Tian Xu: "If such a union must even be considered… then time is required. I will not allow haste to decide her fate."

Di Tian Yi: time measured in his eyes "Time can be granted. The Northern Plains expects respect, not delay without reason."

Tian Xu:"You will have your respect. I will give a formal answer… but not today."

His voice softened, carrying both pride and helplessness.

"I promise that the matter of marriage will be addressed. Yet the decision will not be rushed like a merchant's trade."

Di Tian Yi inclined his head slightly — a gesture that looked courteous, yet carried quiet triumph.

Di Tian Yi: "Very well. A promise is sufficient… for now."

Tian Xu turned to leave, his robes whispering against the stone. Each step felt heavier than the last. He had not agreed — yet he had not refused. Between those two spaces lay a fragile thread of hope, stretched thin by politics and power.

Behind him, Di Tian Yi watched in silence, his calm expression revealing nothing of the deeper schemes hidden beneath the surface. The hall returned to stillness… but the decision's shadow lingered, long and unavoidable.

Light Clan Residence — Late Night

The lanterns in the courtyard had long burned low, leaving only a faint amber glow along the stone paths. Crickets sang in the distance, their fragile music unable to ease the heaviness that lingered in the air. Inside a quiet chamber, Tian Ya stood by the window, her fingers lightly resting on the wooden frame as she gazed at the moon.

A soft knock broke the silence.

Tian Xu entered slowly, his steps careful, his shoulders carrying a weight far older than his years. The wrinkles on his face seemed deeper tonight, as if time itself had pressed harder upon him.

Tian Xu: "Ya'er… you are still awake."

Tian Ya: turning gently "Grandfather? It is late. You should be resting."

He offered a faint smile, one that carried both warmth and exhaustion.

Tian Xu:"Sleep escapes those whose hearts are troubled."

She sensed it immediately — the hesitation in his voice, the heaviness in his gaze.

Tian Ya:"Something is wrong?"

Tian Xu walked closer, stopping a few steps away. For a moment, he simply looked at her, as if memorizing her presence — the innocence he once protected with ease now standing at the edge of a storm he could no longer block.

Tian Xu:"When you were a child, you used to hold my sleeve whenever thunder struck… Do you remember?"

Tian Ya: soft smile "You said thunder was only the sky arguing with itself."

Tian Xu: "And you believed me without question."

The smile faded from his lips. His voice grew quieter.

Tian Xu: "I wish the world were still that simple for you."

A long silence followed.

Tian Ya: "…Grandfather, please speak clearly."

He exhaled slowly, as though each word would cost him pride he had guarded his entire life.

Tian Xu: "The sect is changing. The Light Clan… is not as strong as it once was. Enemies no longer hide their intentions, and allies no longer rush to our side."

Her brows drew together.

"What are you asking of me?"

He did not answer immediately. Instead, he reached out and gently held her hands — his palms rough with age, yet trembling.

Tian Xu: "I have spent my life protecting this clan… protecting you. But there are battles an old man cannot win with strength alone."

Her heartbeat quickened.

Tian Ya: "You are not powerless."

Tian Xu: "I am… when the storm comes from within the walls we once trusted."

His grip tightened ever so slightly, not forceful, but desperate.

Tian Xu: "Sometimes, sacrifice is the shield that saves everyone else."

Tian Ya's eyes glistened.

"You mean… the marriage."

He lowered his gaze, unable to meet her eyes for a brief second.

Tian Xu:"I mean survival."

Silence filled the room, heavy and suffocating. The moonlight that once felt comforting now seemed cold against her skin.

Tian Ya: "Grandfather… if I say no, will the clan fall?"

He did not answer with words. His silence was answer enough.

Her lips trembled slightly. The conflict within her was visible — the struggle between her own heart and the faces of those who had raised her, protected her, loved her.

Tian Xu: "You are the pride of the Light Clan. The heavens blessed us with you… and now the heavens test us through you."

A tear slid down her cheek despite her effort to remain composed.

Tian Ya:"You always told me I was free to choose my path."

Tian Xu: "And I meant it."

His voice cracked for the first time.

"But freedom sometimes asks us to choose the road that hurts the most… so others may walk safely."

The room fell silent again, broken only by her uneven breath.

After what felt like an eternity, Tian Ya slowly nodded — not in acceptance of happiness, but in acceptance of burden.

Tian Ya: "If my choice can keep the Light Clan standing… then I will not run from it."

Tian Xu closed his eyes briefly, relief and guilt intertwining in his expression. He placed a trembling hand on her head, the same gesture he had used to comfort her as a child.

Tian Xu: "Forgive this old man… for asking you to carry a weight that should have been mine."

Tian Ya forced a faint smile, though her eyes no longer held their earlier light.

Outside, the moon remained unchanged — distant, silent, and indifferent — while within the chamber, a promise had been made that neither of them truly wished to hear.
