Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Girl Who Talks Back

POV: Kaelion Thorne

Kaelion's gaze swept the room with his usual clinical precision, noting every detail: the layout of the office, the placement of the chairs, the expressions of the hiring team hovering quietly at the edges, and finally… the girl that just entered.

Elara Quinn.

Her name barely registered on his mental roster of candidates, yet the moment she stepped through the door, something in her presence cut through the usual monotony of boardroom interviews. She wasn't intimidated. But she was polite. Not only that, but she wasn't deferential. And that, in itself, made her unusual.

She opened her mouth, and the words that spilled out immediately challenged the quiet authority he wielded so effortlessly.

"I'm not here to entertain whatever power trip you're on," she said, voice steady, eyes unwavering. "I came here for the job."

Kaelion blinked once. Twice. The room seemed to shrink around him, his own pulse picking up just slightly. She wasn't supposed to speak like that. Not to him. Not to him, Kaelion Thorne, a man who had never had anyone outright challenge him and survive unscathed, but she just spoke to him like that.

Yet there she was, sitting calmly, almost defiantly, daring him to make a move.

The hiring team, usually composed of competent, professional individuals who had seen hundreds of interviews, stared in stunned silence. They had heard confident candidates before, but never someone who carried audacity like a shield and aimed it directly at Kaelion.

He leaned back slightly, fingers steepled, studying her. "You… talk too much," he said finally, voice deceptively calm, though a faint edge of disbelief slipped through.

Elara didn't flinch. "And you think talking less will get you better results?" she countered, tone almost teasing, though her eyes were sharp and focused.

Kaelion's jaw tightened imperceptibly. He was shocked, yes stunned, even but the reaction he hadn't expected was a tiny spark of… curiosity.

She was bold. Reckless, perhaps. And infuriatingly sharp. There was no fear in her expression, only determination, and he had to admit begrudgingly that it intrigued him.

The rest of the room seemed to shrink further as the tension between them intensified.

Every slight movement, every inflection of her voice, drew his attention, binding it in ways he was unused to.

The assistant lingered just inside the door, trying not to show any emotion but subtly shifting his stance, clearly aware of Kaelion's uncharacteristic focus on the candidate.

"I'm not impressed," Kaelion said, voice low, commanding. "And frankly, Ms. Quinn, I don't think you're suitable for this position."

Elara's lips pressed into a thin line, but her eyes never wavered. "Not suitable?" she repeated, tone incredulous. "You mean I don't fit into your narrow idea of what someone should be. I'm here to work. To prove I can do the job. And clearly, you've underestimated me."

And she added, in a low, shaking voice, "Does that mean I am not hired?"

A low, almost imperceptible smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. "Perhaps "

He remembered every word that came out of her mouth word for word. I mean, she thinks I underestimated her. That was the problem. And, for reasons he refused to admit, he didn't like it.

"You're… bold," he added finally, masking curiosity with a hint of warning. "You speak your mind. Most people would have crumbled or cowered. But you…" His gaze locked on hers, sharp and calculating. "…you've drawn my attention in a way that is… inconvenient."

Her brow lifted. "Inconvenient?"

"Exactly," he said, leaning slightly forward, his voice dropping a notch. "You are inconvenient, Ms. Quinn. In ways I… didn't expect."

Elara's stomach flipped. She can't know he's intrigued. She can't see this. But she noticed the slight shift in his posture, the way his eyes lingered longer than necessary, and a small, reluctant thrill ran through her.

Kaelion straightened abruptly, cutting through the moment before it could grow any more personal. "The final decision is mine," he said, voice hardening. "And I've made it clear you will not get this job."

Elara's jaw tightened, but her expression didn't change. "Noted," she said firmly. "I don't need anyone's permission to prove myself."

The assistant, who had been hovering near the doorway, cleared his throat. "Ms. Quinn, your final interview is over."

He noticed she took a deep breath, holding her folder as if it were a shield against the world. "Alright," she said through clenched teeth. "Thank you for having me."

His assistant ushered her out as she left; he stared at her for a long moment, a rare flicker of uncertainty across his features. His mind, usually a precise machine of calculation and control, found itself wrestling with an unfamiliar thought: Why can't I stop thinking about her? Why does she get under my skin in a way no one else ever has?

The hiring team remained silent, watching the silent battle unfold, sensing that something far more dangerous than a mere interview was taking place.

Finally, Kaelion cleared his throat, and the tension shifted slightly but not entirely. And said, "Should I send in the next candidate, sir?"

Kaelion straightened his posture, mask firmly back in place, but inside, he couldn't shake the thought that had planted itself in his mind:

This girl… is going to be a problem.

And for the first time in years, Kaelion Thorne wasn't entirely sure he wanted to eliminate that problem.

He gave the assistant a slow, deliberate nod. "End the interview."

As she reached the door, Kaelion's gaze followed her, unyielding, lingering far longer than it should have. Something in him stirred a dangerous curiosity that both terrified and intrigued him.

Her name kept ringing in his head: Elara Quinn, and that moment, he already concluded she was a problem.

He kept wondering if she was aware that the man who had just dismissed her was more than just a boss. He was the man who could control her future, her career… and perhaps, unintentionally, her heart.

Kaelion Thorne, ruthless heir to an empire, had never been challenged like this before.

And he wasn't sure he wanted to win this battle.
