Chapter 39 - Diwali Festival (part-2)

The sun had long set, and the streets glowed under the soft golden shimmer of countless diyas. The evening air was alive with the distant crackle of fireworks, their sparks reflecting in the wide, excited eyes of the children darting past Hiten and Aarya. The festive aroma of sweets, incense, and smoke from fireworks hung in the air, blending into a rich, intoxicating mix.

Aarya adjusted the bracelet Hiten had gifted her earlier, its delicate glow seeming to harmonize with the lights surrounding them. "Hiten… I can't believe how beautiful everything looks," she murmured, squeezing his hand gently.

Hiten smiled, his gaze soft. "And yet, the brightest thing tonight is still you," he said quietly. Aarya felt a warmth rush through her chest, her cheeks tinged with a gentle pink.

They wandered past stalls selling diyas, decorative lanterns, and handmade crafts. The occasional vendor waved them over, offering free samples of sweets or inviting them to try simple games. Hiten playfully pretended to compete in a coconut-shooting game, missing every shot, while Aarya laughed uncontrollably, shaking her head.

"You're hopeless at this," she teased, nudging him gently.

"Hopeless? Or maybe I just wanted to make you laugh?" he countered with a mischievous grin. Aarya rolled her eyes, but her smile lingered, unable to hide the happiness in her heart.

As they walked further, the sounds of fireworks became louder, punctuated with occasional cheers from the crowd. Hiten spotted a quieter street, slightly away from the bustle. "Come on, let's find a better spot to watch the fireworks," he suggested.

The two found a small, elevated terrace overlooking the heart of the festival. From here, the fireworks painted the night sky in bursts of red, blue, and gold. The city looked like a sea of tiny flickering lights, and for a moment, the world seemed to slow down, leaving just the two of them.

Hiten handed Aarya a sparkler he had secretly saved from the stalls. "Here… make a wish," he said, lighting it carefully.

Aarya's eyes sparkled as she held the sparkler, watching it hiss and flicker. "I wish…" she began, pausing as she looked at him, "…that moments like this never end."

Hiten's heart skipped a beat. "Then let's make more memories together," he whispered, intertwining his fingers with hers as their sparklers cast fleeting shadows across their smiling faces.

The gentle hum of conversation, laughter, and the faint crackle of fireworks created a perfect symphony around them. Hiten reached into his pocket again, producing a tiny packet of colorful powdered chalk. "Rangoli, round two?" he teased.

Aarya laughed, nodding eagerly. "You never quit, do you?"

For the next hour, they created miniature rangolis on the terrace tiles, drawing simple hearts, swirls, and stars, laughing whenever a design collapsed or smeared. Occasionally, Hiten would flick a bit of powder at her, and she would retaliate, creating a playful, colorful mess.

Finally, exhausted and with hearts full, they sat side by side on the terrace, watching the last fireworks of the night burst across the sky. Aarya rested her head lightly on Hiten's shoulder, letting out a contented sigh.

"This… this was perfect," she whispered.

Hiten smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "Perfect because you're here," he repeated softly, echoing his earlier words, a warm certainty settling in his chest.

The distant sounds of the festival slowly faded into a gentle hush, leaving only the soft rustle of the evening breeze and the quiet comfort of their closeness. Hiten glanced at her bracelet, catching the faint glint of light, and whispered, "It was so much fun, this was the bestest diwali that I've ever celebrated"

Aarya nodded, her fingers brushing lightly over his. "Same With me" she said.

The city continued to sparkle below them, but for Hiten and Aarya, the night sky, filled with fireworks and twinkling lights, had only one focus—each other.
