The apartment was quiet, bathed in late afternoon sunlight that filtered lazily through the blinds. Joan rested against Damien, her sprained ankle still throbbing but ignored in favor of the warmth and safety of his presence. For a moment, she allowed herself to breathe fully, to exist without defiance or pretense.
"Damien…" she began, her voice hesitant, as if testing the boundaries of this newfound honesty. "There's something I need to tell you. About my family… about..." She faltered, biting her lip. "About what they expect of me, the marriage arrangements…"
Damien's hand rose, brushing gently over hers, and he gave a soft shake of his head. "Shh," he said, his voice low but firm. "I know, Joan. I've known. Every bit of it. But right now, I don't care about any of that. I only care about you. About us. Before anything else, I want you to choose me. That's it."
Her eyes widened slightly, a mixture of relief and awe washing over her. "You… you knew?" she whispered, voice barely audible.
"I did," he replied, a small, tender smile tugging at his lips. "And I didn't want to cloud this with expectations or pressure. I want this to be yours. Our choice, not a battle with anyone else. You pick me first, Joan. Everything else can wait."
Her chest tightened, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. For the first time, she felt completely seen, not as the dutiful daughter, not as the rebellious girl, but as Joan, wholly and unapologetically. She nodded, leaning into him. "Then I choose you," she said softly, a quiet conviction behind every word.
Damien's hand found her cheek, thumb brushing lightly, grounding her. "Then we do this together. No half measures. No distractions. Just us."
And for the first time in what felt like forever, Joan believed it. She believed in him, in herself, and in the freedom they could carve together.
Meanwhile, across town, a very different kind of reunion was unfolding.
Kendrick's POV
The city skyline blurred past the car window as Kendrick drove, mind half on the road and half on Elsie, who sat beside him, her hand brushing his lightly. After a month of being away on business, he was finally back, and the reunion still felt surreal.
Her presence was like a lighthouse after a long storm. He couldn't stop watching her, the way she laughed at a story he told, the soft way she rested her head briefly against his shoulder, the familiar warmth that had anchored him even when they were miles apart.
"This branch opening is going to be huge," Kendrick said, breaking the comfortable silence. "But I… I missed this," he added, voice softening. "I missed us."
Elsie smiled, squeezing his hand. "And I missed you. The city felt… empty without you, even though I was busy."
They drove past familiar streets, memories of their school days and first dates surfacing in quiet laughter. Cafés, shops, the little corners of the city where they had walked and talked for hours, each one a testament to years of growing together. Kendrick felt his chest tighten, the weight of distance and time melting away in her presence.
As they arrived at their favorite spot, a small terrace overlooking the river, Elsie rested her head on his shoulder. "I'm proud of you," she whispered. "Everything you've accomplished, all your work… you've done it without me, and I admire that."
"And I'm proud of you," Kendrick replied, pressing a kiss to her temple. "You've held our world together while I was away. And I promise, no matter how many countries I open offices in, or deals I sign, I'll always come back to you."
The city lights began to twinkle as evening approached, reflecting in the water below. In that moment, both of them felt a quiet peace, a rare moment untouched by family expectations, business pressures, or the chaos of the world. Just Kendrick and Elsie, side by side, hand in hand, hearts in sync.
And somewhere deep inside, Kendrick knew that whatever challenges lay ahead; rival families, gossip, or long business trips, nothing would shake this bond they had forged over years of trust, laughter, and love.
