Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 : Love

In Madison's apartment, loud knocking rattled the door.

Madison opened it with an annoyed expression, clearly not happy about someone banging on her door that late at night.

Then she saw who it was.

Dean. Sam. Henry.

Her expression shifted to confusion. "Um… what happened?"

Dean didn't waste time.

"The one who killed your boss is your front-door neighbor."

Madison blinked. "Glen is the killer?"

"So you haven't seen him tonight?" Sam asked quickly. "Did he try to contact you or come by?"

Madison shook her head. "No. The last time I saw him was this evening… wait—what?"

Dean stepped inside slightly. "There's a chance he might come for you. You're the only person connecting him and your boss."

Madison frowned, trying to process that. "Wait. Are you saying my boss died because of me?"

Sam immediately shook his head. "No. We're saying you might be the next target."

The room went quiet for a moment.

Since Glen wasn't in his apartment when they checked, they decided to head back to the bar where the local crowd usually gathered. If the attack in the alley had failed, Glen might have gone there for another prey.

Dean stepped toward the door, already heading out with Sam to check the bar. He stopped halfway, turned back, and looked at Henry standing near the couch.

The look on Dean's face carried that familiar mix of teasing and suspicion.

"Alright," Dean said slowly, pointing a finger between Henry and Madison. "You stay here, keep her safe. That's the job."

Henry nodded once. "Yeah. I know."

Dean didn't move yet. Instead, his eyes narrowed slightly and his tone changed just enough to be annoying.

"And try not to enjoy the assignment too much."

Sam immediately looked away, already knowing what was coming.

Henry didn't even bother answering with words.

He simply raised his hand and gave Dean a very clear middle finger.

Dean smirked like he had expected exactly that reaction.

"Real mature," he muttered before opening the door.

Sam followed him out, and a moment later the door closed behind them, leaving Henry and Madison alone in the apartment.

***

Time passed slowly inside the apartment.

Henry sat on the couch with the TV on, leaning back while watching whatever late-night program was running.

On the screen, a cheerful host stood behind a kitchen counter full of ingredients.

"So today we will learn how to make—"

Henry stared at the screen for a moment, then grabbed the remote and lowered the volume slightly. Cooking shows weren't exactly thrilling, but it was something to fill the silence while he kept watch.

Madison stood near the kitchen counter, arms folded, still unsettled from everything they had told her.

After a moment she looked toward Henry.

"You really think Glen could do something like that?" she asked quietly.

Henry didn't immediately look away from the TV.

"Yeah," Henry said quietly. "I do."

Madison walked a little closer into the living room, trying to process that.

"He never seemed like that," she said. "He was weird sometimes, but not… dangerous."

Henry finally looked over at her.

"Most people who turn out to be dangerous don't advertise it."

"You're right," Madison said quietly.

She picked up a pile of clothes from the chair and walked over, sitting beside Henry on the couch. Without saying anything more, she started folding them one by one.

Henry glanced at her, then looked behind them.

"Ummm… you know there's a table behind us," he said.

Madison didn't even look back. "My house, my rules."

She smiled faintly and continued folding the clothes.

Henry sighed and looked back at the TV, though he wasn't really watching anymore. It was obvious what was happening. The way she sat close, the occasional glance in his direction—it wasn't subtle.

He already understood why.

Revenant blood.

Creatures with heightened instincts could sense it, feel it like some strange pull.

So whatever attraction she felt wasn't really about him.

Henry wasn't interested in going down that road, especially knowing how the story ended.

After a few moments Madison spoke again.

"So… how did you end up in the police department?"

Henry shrugged slightly.

"Well… it was kind of a roller coaster ride," he said. "Somehow I just ended up in this job."

He kept the answer vague on purpose.

If he actually explained what he did for a living—hunting ghosts, demons, and monsters—she'd probably think he was insane. Or worse, she'd learn the truth about what she was becoming.

And that conversation was not one he wanted to have tonight.

Madison finished folding one of the shirts and placed it on the pile beside her. After a moment she glanced sideways at Henry again.

"So… are you in a relationship?" she asked.

Henry shook his head. "No."

"And I'm not interested in having one right now."

Madison paused mid-fold and turned toward him, eyebrows rising.

"Wow," she said. "Did someone dump you so badly that you decided to quit relationships altogether?"

Henry almost choked hearing that.

What the hell does that even mean? he thought. Just because someone wants to stay single doesn't mean they got dumped.

He shook his head.

"No," Henry said calmly. "I just want a peaceful life."

Madison tilted her head slightly. "You can't find peace in a relationship?"

Henry leaned back on the couch, thinking for a second before answering.

"No. A relationship is like a battlefield," he said matter-of-factly. "There's no leave… only war."

Madison stared at him for a second.

Then she burst out laughing.

"I have never heard anyone describe love like that."

Henry shrugged.

"Your way of thinking is interesting,"
