Chapter 26 - Chapter 25 panic attack

The Weight of the World

[Keifer's POV]

One moment, Jay was trembling in my arms, her heart drumming a frantic, jagged rhythm against my chest. The next, the rhythm simply... slowed. Her grip on my shirt loosened, her fingers uncurling as if the strength had been drained out of her by an invisible plug.

"Jay?" I whispered, pulling back to look at her.

Her head lulled back, her eyes fluttering shut. Her skin, already pale, had turned the color of ash.

"Jay! Jay, look at me!"

She didn't answer. Her body went completely limp, a dead weight in my arms. Panicked, I caught her before she could hit the floor, sliding down with her until I was cradling her against my knees.

Mamma! Pappa!" I roared, my voice cracking with a terror I had never felt in my life. I had faced hostile takeovers, failed exams, and physical threats, but seeing Jay—my brilliant, fierce Jay—extinguished like a candle was more than I could handle.

"Oh, God," Mamma gasped, dropping to her side instantly. She pressed two fingers to Jay's neck. "Her pulse is thready, Keifer. It's shock. Her nervous system just... it just shut down. It was too much for her."

"I've got her," I rasped. I didn't wait for a doctor. I scooped her up, her head resting lifelessly against my shoulder, and carried her back up the stairs. My heart was a hammer in my chest, every step feeling like an eternity.

The Hour of Shadows

For the next sixty minutes, the Blue Suite became a silent infirmary.

I didn't leave her side for a single second. I sat on the edge of the bed, holding her hand—it was so cold, like marble—while Mamma applied a cool compress to her forehead. The family doctor had been called, but I was the one doing the work. I was the one whispering to her, even though she couldn't hear me.

"Come back, Jay," I murmured, my thumb stroking the back of her hand. "The Marianos are gone. You're safe. You're a Watson now. Please, just open your eyes."

Pappa stood by the window, his arms.crossed, his face a mask of guilt. "I should have stopped them at the gate," he muttered. "I shouldn't have let them in the room."

"It's not your fault, Keizer," Mamma said softly, though her eyes were fixed on Jay. "This has been building for years. Nineteen years of being told she's a 'burden'... her body finally just had enough of the fight."

I looked at the girl on the bed. Even unconscious, she looked like she was trying to solve a problem she couldn't win. I realized then that my love for her wasn't just about the brilliance or the banter. It was about this—the quiet, fragile soul that.she hid behind the equations.

I reached out and brushed a stray hair from her face. I'll be your strength until you find yours again, I promised her silently. I'll be the gravity that keeps you from floating away.

The Return

[Jay's POV]

The first thing I felt was warmth.

It wasn't the scorching heat of a Manila afternoon, but a gentle, steady radiator-like warmth pressing against my hand. I tried to move my fingers, but they felt heavy, like they were submerged in honey.

The memories came back in flashes: My father's cold eyes. The word Burden. Mamma shouting Daughter-in-Law. The sound of the door slamming. And then... darkness.

I forced my eyelids open. The ceiling of the Blue Suite came into focus, the afternoon sun casting long, golden shadows across the room.

"Jay?"

The voice was a rough whisper, filled with so much relief it made my chest ache. I turned my head slowly. Keifer was sitting right there. He looked terrible—his hair was a mess, his eyes were bloodshot, and he was still wearing the shirt I had soaked with my tears.

"Keifer," I croaked, my throat feeling like I'd swallowed sandpaper.

"Hey," he breathed, a shaky, beautiful smile breaking across his face. He leaned in, pressing his forehead against mine, his eyes closing in a long, shuddering exhale. "Welcome back, Genius. You scared the hell out of me."

"I... I fainted?" I asked, feeling a blush of embarrassment. "How... how illogical."

Keifer let out a wet laugh, his hand squeezing mine so tight I could feel his pulse. "It wasn't illogical, Jay. It was a system reboot. You've been running on 'Survival Mode' for too long. Your body just decided it was time to install some 'Peace of Mind' software."

I looked around the room. Mamma was sitting in the armchair by the window, her eyes bright with unshed tears as she saw me awake. Pappa was standing in the doorway, giving me a silent, respectful nod.

"They're gone, Jay," Keifer whispered, sensing my unspoken fear. "Pappa has increased the estate security. No one enters this gate without a Watson blood-scan. You are officially in the most fortified sanctuary in the country."

I leaned back into the pillows, the reality finally sinking in. The Marianos were gone. Not just for the day, but for good. The bridge had been burned, and on this side of the fire, I was loved.

"Mamma said... she said I was a daughter-in-law," I whispered, looking at him.

Keifer didn't flinch. He didn't look away. He reached out and cupped my cheek, his thumb tracing my lower lip.

"She has a big mouth," he teased softly. "But she's not wrong. We might not have the rings yet, Jay, but you've been the only one for me since I saw you arguing with that claw machine. You're stuck with us."

I reached up, covering his hand with mine. The "Burdened Genius" was gone. The girl who took the bus was tired. But as I looked at Keifer, I knew that for the first time in my life, I didn't have to be the one to carry the weight.

"I think I like being stuck," I said, a small, genuine smile finally touching my lips.

Keifer leaned down, and this time, there were no phones, no parents, and no Marianos to stop him. He pressed his lips to my forehead in a long, sacred kiss that felt like a seal on a new decree.

"Sleep a little more," he murmured against my skin. "I'll be right here when you wake up. I'm not going anywhere."

"Promise?"

"On the Watson name," he vowed.

And as I closed my eyes again, drifting into a sleep that was finally, truly peaceful, I knew it was a promise he would never break.
