Mia's body hadn't finished falling when a second person started doing the same.
Jim saw it from above. He had launched himself into the air the moment the screaming started, trying to get a view, trying to find something that made sense in the noise and the chaos below. But what he found made no sense at all.
It was slow at first. One person at a time, somewhere in the crowd, their face would go empty in the middle of running or screaming. Then their hand would rise, fighting itself the whole way up. The trembling was visible even from above, the arm pulling against some internal resistance that eventually gave out. Their palms would press against their skull, and then light would shoot through the other side of their head.
Their bodies fell.
"Everyone calm down!" His voice carried over the noise and accomplished nothing.
Another one dropped near the silver wall.
Then two more simultaneously near the center.
