Chapter 17 - Ch 17- A Ridiculous Title

Satoru Gojo could see that Sukuna, the King of Curses, had created such a Veil clearly because he was afraid of something.

But Satoru Gojo was in no mood to mock Sukuna at this moment; he was mostly just there to confirm the survivors, nothing more.

Immediately after, the police and 'Window' entered the scene simultaneously. The police were responsible for dispersing the crowd, while Window confirmed Itadori's current situation and took charge of transferring him.

Satoru Gojo did not directly enter the passage leading to the sewer that Sukuna had opened, as doing so would be too obvious. The commotion Itadori had caused was already significant enough.

Satoru Gojo first walked to Seto's body. He knew of Seto's existence and had crossed paths with him during missions; they were acquaintances to some extent.

Satoru Gojo silently confirmed that there were no signs of a struggle, nor were there any traces of Cursed Residue. He could confirm that Seto had been easily taken out by the enemy in a single blow. After learning this, Satoru Gojo continued forward into the sewer.

Relying on the Rikugan to precisely control repulsive force, Satoru Gojo easily tossed the collapsed rubble into the nearby stream.

Soon, beneath the debris, he found the remains of Kento Nanami's body, along with the parts and fragments of his destroyed phone.

Ironically, Satoru Gojo couldn't even manage to piece Nanami back together completely.

From the damage to the phone, Satoru Gojo could also sense that it wasn't destroyed as collateral damage from an attack; the deformation clearly showed it had been crushed by a grip.

Gojo could think of several possibilities for why the opponent would deliberately target a phone. One was that Nanami had thrown the phone as a weapon in a moment of desperation; the second was that Nanami realized the situation was wrong and the enemy far outmatched him, so he hoped to use the phone to contact him for help; the third was that the enemy had targeted the phone from the start, not wanting Nanami to have any chance to send out information.

Personally, Satoru Gojo was more inclined toward the latter two possibilities. In Satoru Gojo's mind, Nanami was a mature and reliable Grade 1 Jujutsu Sorcerer companion. He wouldn't have come to such a place for no reason; he only would have come because he had investigated some issue. Thus, it wouldn't have come to a point where he had nothing left but a phone to use as a weapon in desperation.

Of the remaining two possibilities, Satoru Gojo rationally believed more in the former. However, from the Cursed Residue scattered here, he could feel the aura of the Cursed Spirit that had previously shouted that Suguru Geto was still alive.

This subconsciously gave him a higher expectation for the third possibility.

Although Satoru Gojo did not show it on his face at this time, he felt a deep sense of guilt and self-reproach in his heart.

Because if it was the second possibility, it meant Nanami had intended to contact him for help, but was ultimately interrupted by the enemy.

Satoru Gojo still remembered saying that he could only save those who were already prepared to be saved.

He believed that before Nanami died, he must have hoped that Gojo would appear to save him.

Not only was he unable to respond to that hope, but he could even be considered the culprit who pushed him into such a situation.

If he hadn't entrusted the task of educating and supervising Itadori to Nanami because of his own busy schedule, perhaps today's tragedy would not have unfolded.

That was an enemy that even Sukuna, the King of Curses, had to retreat into a pathetic passive defense to wait for him to come and save the day.

Rather than feeling angry at the culprit who caused all this, Satoru Gojo was mostly reflecting on himself.

If it was such an enemy, then as the strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer in the world, he should have been the one to face him. In the end, he was unable to fulfill this 'responsibility'.

This was already the second time recently. The first was Ijichi, this time was Nanami, and before that, there was Geto. Was being the'strongest' actually being the strongest at being unable to do anything...? That'strongest' really is a ridiculous title... After Mahito left, he also received a message from Kenjaku about accompanying him to Kyoto before the Exchange Event to discuss cooperation with someone from Kyoto Jujutsu High.

As for the'someone' Kenjaku mentioned, Mahito had naturally found the answer from the manga: it was Kokichi Muta from Kyoto Jujutsu High, whose original body could not move freely due to a congenital 'disability' caused by the effects of a Heavenly Restriction.

Mahito naturally had no objection to this. If the plot followed the manga, the intelligence cooperation with Kokichi Muta would become optional. However, after Mahito made drastic 'adaptations' to the story's direction, it was very necessary to obtain information on potential changes as soon as possible.

At the same time, it meant that before Mahito kept the appointment, Kenjaku would likely not come looking for them for anything else.

In this way, this free time could be used to implement Mahito's plan.

However, Jogo's strength recovery speed was even slower than Mahito had anticipated. But this did not stop Mahito from pushing forward with the plan; he simply moved the implementation site from Mount Fuji to the active volcano Mount Miharayama on Izu Oshima, near Tokyo.

Mount Miharayama itself is a relatively active volcano. Its most recent eruption led to the evacuation of ten thousand residents on the island, and the area near the crater has been closed off for nearly ten years, with no one allowed to approach. Using it to spread humanity's fear of the earth would be sufficient.

Mahito's idea was simple: since deepening humanity's fear of the earth should increase power, it should also increase Jogo's power to some extent.

He wasn't particularly worried about this matter being noticed by Jujutsu High or Kenjaku.

This was mainly due to the unique nature of Cursed Spirits; the vast majority of monkeys cannot perceive them. Moreover, a volcanic eruption is not within the scope of what Jujutsu Sorcerers handle, and news cameras cannot capture information related to Cursed Spirits. It could be called an 'open' secret operation.

"Although I haven't done anything like this before, I can think of two ways. One is from the outside: you expand your Cursed Technique's effect to the volcano and use your Cursed Technique to control volcanic activity. However, your condition hasn't fully recovered, so the whole process will probably take quite some time. The other way is for you to enter the interior of the volcano directly and control the volcanic activity from within, prompting it to become more active and eventually erupt," Mahito paused and asked half-jokingly, "But you won't drown in the magma, will you?"

Jogo gave Mahito a speechless glare, ignoring his joking question.

"I just need to make the volcano erupt?"

Mahito put his hands on his hips and answered very confidently.

"Of course. As long as we make this volcano erupt, all we have to do is expand the disaster caused by the eruption. Humans themselves will help us spread the word for the rest~"

Mahito's confidence stemmed, in part, from the fear generated by Sukuna's display of strength before ordinary people and the explosive spread of that news. To some extent, this feedback had enhanced Mahito, even if the final gain from the enhancement was only a little bit.
