Chapter 32 - “The Slow Dance”

A few weeks later, Anna's company hosted an annual celebration gala.

It was elegant.

Soft golden lights.

Live music.

People in formal suits and gowns.

Anna moved confidently through the hall, greeting investors and partners. She looked powerful — calm, graceful, in control.

But the moment she saw Oliver across the room, that professional composure softened.

He wasn't looking at the stage.

He was looking at her.

The way he used to.

But now without hesitation.

Later in the evening, the lights dimmed slightly as the band began playing a slow instrumental piece.

Couples slowly moved toward the dance floor.

Oliver stepped in front of her.

"May I?" he asked, offering his hand.

She raised an eyebrow playfully. "Are you sure? Last time you were nervous around me."

He smiled. "Not anymore."

She placed her hand in his.

Warm.

Certain.

He guided her gently to the center of the floor.

The music was soft.

Their movements slow.

His hand rested respectfully at her waist.

Her hand rested lightly on his shoulder.

For a moment, the world around them faded.

No board members.

No cameras.

No expectations.

Just them.

"You know," he murmured, "I used to imagine dancing with you at our school farewell."

Anna smiled softly. "You never asked."

"I was scared you'd say no."

She looked up at him.

"I would have said yes."

He shook his head with a soft laugh. "We wasted so much time."

"Maybe we were just waiting to be ready."

He pulled her slightly closer — still gentle, still careful.

"You look beautiful tonight," he said quietly.

The compliment wasn't loud or exaggerated.

It was sincere.

She felt it.

"Thank you," she replied. "You clean up well too."

He smiled, but his eyes stayed serious.

"I don't just mean tonight."

She understood.

He wasn't talking about the dress.

He was talking about the woman she had become.

Strong.

Independent.

Unbreakable.

And still soft enough to love.

The song slowed even more.

She rested her head lightly against his chest for a brief second.

Not dramatic.

Just natural.

His heartbeat was steady.

"Do you ever think about that math exam?" he whispered playfully.

She laughed softly. "You helped me cheat."

"I prefer to call it strategic assistance."

She looked up at him.

"That's when I started falling for you."

He paused mid-step.

"That day?"

She nodded.

He smiled warmly.

"I guess I was lucky in more ways than one."

As the music ended, neither of them moved immediately.

The applause around them brought reality back.

But something had shifted.

Not excitement.

Not rush.

Just deeper connection.

Oliver brushed his thumb lightly over her hand before letting go.

"Every dance from now on," he said quietly, "I'm not missing."

Anna smiled.

"Good. Because I'm not waiting another ten years."

Under the warm lights, surrounded by a world they had built separately—

They stood together.

Not as teenagers.

Not as almost.

But as two hearts that finally found the right timing.

And this time…

They weren't letting go. 💙✨
