Chapter 68 - The City Beneath the Veil

Darkness swallowed them. Not the darkness of night. This darkness felt ancient. It pressed against the skin, carrying the weight of centuries. Every footstep echoed down the endless staircase, each sound disappearing into the abyss below before returning as a faint whisper. Aurora counted without realizing it. One hundred steps. Two hundred. Three hundred. Still the staircase continued. The air became colder. Not winter cold. Dead cold. The kind of cold that belonged to places untouched by sunlight.

Behind her, the survivors descended in silence. No one complained. No one spoke. The children who had cried moments earlier now clung tightly to their parents, as though even they understood that loud voices did not belong here. Gideon stayed at the rear of the group, helping the elderly and watching the darkness above. Elara remained beside their mother, supporting a wounded woman whose leg had nearly given out. Darian carried the torch. Its orange flame looked strangely small against the endless black. Lucien walked beside Aurora. His eyes never left Caelum. Caelum... he continued downward without hesitation. His pace never changed. His shoulders never tensed. He walked like a man returning home.

Finally... the staircase ended. Aurora's boots touched solid ground. She lifted her eyes. Her breath caught. The survivors behind her stopped one after another. Silence spread through the chamber. Even Caelum paused. Before them stood an enormous city. Not ruins. A city. Entire streets stretched into the darkness. Towering buildings carved from black stone rose toward a ceiling so high it disappeared into shadow. Ancient bridges connected rooftops. Massive pillars supported the underground world. Stone statues lined wide avenues, each standing nearly thirty feet tall. Some had lost their heads. Others had broken arms. Many still stood proudly despite the centuries. Everything was coated in dust. Everything... except the road before Caelum. That path remained perfectly clean. As though someone had walked it only moments ago.

One of the survivors whispered, "Impossible..." Another slowly crossed himself. "This city..." Aurora took a cautious step forward. "...has been here all this time." Lucien answered quietly. "Long before Hollow Vale." A child tugged at his mother's sleeve. "Did people live here?" Nobody answered. The silence itself became the answer.

Aurora looked closer. The buildings weren't empty. Stone figures stood everywhere. A merchant behind a market stall. A woman holding a baby. Children gathered around a fountain. Soldiers standing guard. They looked so lifelike that Aurora almost expected them to breathe. She approached one. A young man. His face was frozen in terror. One hand stretched toward the sky. The other shielded a little girl behind him. His expression looked impossibly real. Aurora reached out. Her fingertips brushed the stone. Cold. Smooth. Human. She pulled her hand away. "These aren't statues..." Lucien closed his eyes. "No." The survivors stared in horror. An elderly woman covered her mouth. "They're people." Nobody moved. The realization spread slowly through the group. An entire civilization. Frozen. Not buried. Not destroyed. Stopped. Forever.

Darian walked toward another figure. An old priest kneeling before a temple. His lips remained slightly parted. As though he had been speaking when time itself abandoned him. "What happened to them?" Darian whispered. Caelum finally answered. "They stayed." The response echoed through the silent streets. Aurora turned sharply. "What does that mean?" Caelum looked across the city. "They were given a choice." "And?" "They chose poorly."

Before Aurora could question him further a deep metallic sound echoed somewhere far ahead. Clang... Clang... Clang... Like a bell struck beneath the earth. Every survivor jumped. The sound came again. Closer. The echoes rolled through every street. Then stopped. The silence afterward felt even heavier. Gideon stepped beside Aurora. "I don't like this." "I know." She scanned the rooftops. The balconies. The dark windows. Every instinct told her they were being watched. Yet nothing moved. Nothing breathed. Only dust drifted lazily through the air.

Lucien suddenly raised one hand. "Everyone stop." The entire group froze. "What?" Aurora whispered. Lucien slowly pointed toward the street ahead. "The dust." Aurora frowned. It wasn't settling. It was moving. Tiny clouds drifted across the road. Not because of wind. Because footsteps disturbed them. Fresh footsteps. Invisible footsteps. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. They stopped twenty feet away. Nobody stood there. Yet the dust clearly showed something had just walked across it. A little girl whimpered behind her mother. One of the survivors began praying under his breath. Aurora tightened her grip on the Veil. The invisible footprints resumed. Slow. Measured. Approaching. Closer. Closer still. Then... they stopped directly in front of Caelum. For several long seconds... nothing happened. Caelum inclined his head slightly. Not a bow. A greeting.

Aurora felt the hairs rise on the back of her neck. "You know it's here." Caelum answered without looking at her. "I know this city." The invisible presence moved again. This time it circled him. Dust lifted with every unseen step. The survivors backed away in fear. One young man couldn't bear it any longer. He shouted and swung his axe into empty air. The blade struck nothing. Then... a violent force threw him backward. His body slammed against a stone pillar with a sickening crack. He collapsed to the ground. Unconscious. The survivors screamed. Chaos erupted. "Stay together!" Gideon roared. Elara hurried to the fallen man while their mother pulled frightened children behind a broken statue. Darian raised the torch higher. Its light flickered wildly.

Aurora stepped in front of the group. "Show yourself!" Her voice echoed through the ancient city. No answer came. Only another set of invisible footsteps. This time... walking away. Leading deeper into the city. Toward a massive structure rising above all the others. An enormous temple. Its bronze doors stood half open. Ancient symbols covered its walls. The sight made Caelum stop completely. For the first time since entering the city... his calm expression changed. Not to fear. Not to anger. Recognition. Lucien saw it too. His voice became low. "So... it's still standing." Caelum nodded once. "It always would." Aurora looked from one brother to the other. "What is that place?" Neither answered.

The bell rang again. Once. Deep. Ancient. Calling. Caelum looked toward the temple. Then quietly said, "That..." His golden eyes never left the towering doors. "...is where everything was broken." A cold wind swept through the dead city. Hundreds of stone figures seemed to stare at Aurora all at once. And somewhere within the darkness of the temple... something heavy... moved.
