Chapter 69 - The Temple of Silence

The sound came again. ...Thoom... The bell did not ring. It breathed. The vibration rolled through the buried city, passing beneath Aurora's feet and through every lifeless stone figure standing along the ancient streets. No bird answered. No insect stirred. Even the echoes seemed afraid to linger. Aurora stared at the temple. It dominated the city like a forgotten king. Black pillars rose hundreds of feet into the darkness overhead, disappearing into the cavern ceiling. Time had scarred the structure. Great cracks split the walls, vines of pale stone creeping through them like frozen veins. Enormous bronze doors stood half open, each one engraved with symbols older than any language Aurora had ever seen. Yet despite the centuries... the doors looked as though someone had entered only moments ago. A cold breeze escaped through the opening. It carried no smell of decay. Only dust. Old... dry... endless dust.

Behind Aurora, the survivors gathered closer together. Nobody wanted to be the first to step forward. A little boy clutched Gideon's sleeve. "Is... is someone inside?" Gideon rested a reassuring hand on the child's shoulder, though his own face betrayed his uncertainty. "I don't know." Elara knelt beside the injured man who had been thrown against the pillar. Blood trickled from a wound on his forehead. "He's breathing." Their mother tore a strip from her cloak and wrapped it around the man's head. "We're not leaving anyone." Aurora smiled faintly. Even here... even beneath a mountain filled with nightmares... her mother remained exactly who she had always been. Someone who refused to abandon people.

Caelum continued walking. Not toward the survivors. Not toward Aurora. Toward the temple. His footsteps echoed alone through the empty avenue. Lucien watched him go. "Aurora." She looked at him. "If he enters first..." He never finished. He didn't need to. Aurora already understood. She turned to Gideon. "Stay with everyone." Gideon immediately shook his head. "No." "You need to protect them." "So do you." Aurora smiled tiredly. "I'll have Lucien." Lucien didn't look convinced. But he nodded. "I'll bring her back." Gideon looked from Lucien to Aurora. Finally... he sighed. "Don't make me regret trusting you." Aurora squeezed his shoulder. "I'll try."

Without another word she hurried after Caelum. Lucien followed. The distance between them and the temple grew shorter. The city became quieter. Strangely... the closer they came to the temple... the fewer stone figures remained. Until finally... none. Only empty streets. Broken fountains. Collapsed homes. It felt as though the people themselves had refused to approach this place. Aurora noticed something else. The buildings nearest the temple showed signs of battle. Walls had been shattered. Columns lay broken across the streets. Black scorch marks covered the stone. Some structures looked as though something unimaginably powerful had torn through them. Not recently. Centuries ago. Yet the destruction remained. Frozen. Like the city had never recovered.

Aurora slowed beside a cracked monument. "What happened here?" Caelum answered without looking back. "The end." She frowned. "You keep speaking like that." "Because history rarely needs many words." His answer irritated her. She stepped in front of him. "I'm tired of riddles." Caelum finally stopped. For several long moments he simply looked at her. Then... "I could tell you everything." Aurora waited. "You wouldn't believe me." "Try me." "No." His voice remained calm. "You'll see it yourself." He walked around her. Aurora clenched her fists. Every conversation with him felt like chasing smoke.

Lucien quietly stepped beside her. "Don't." She looked at him. "Don't let him lead the conversation." "He already is." "I know." They reached the temple steps. Hundreds of them. Each carved from a single block of black stone. Aurora climbed the first. A strange sensation spread through her body. Not pain. Recognition. The Veil stirred beneath her skin. Not violently. Almost... respectfully. She climbed another step. Then another. The feeling grew stronger. At the top of the staircase stood two enormous statues. One had lost its head. The other remained almost intact. It depicted a woman. Long robes flowed around her. One hand stretched toward the sky. The other rested against her chest. Time had eroded most of her features. Only one thing remained perfectly preserved. Her eyes. They had been carved with astonishing care. Calm. Steadfast. Almost alive. Aurora found herself staring into them. "The face..." she whispered. "It's gone." Lucien answered quietly. "It wasn't destroyed." Aurora looked at him. "It was removed." A chill ran through her. Someone... had deliberately erased the woman's identity. Not damaged. Removed.

Caelum stood before the great bronze doors. His hand hovered inches from the ancient metal. He didn't touch it. For the first time... he hesitated. Aurora had never seen him hesitate. Not before battle. Not before the doorway. Not before the labyrinth collapsed. Yet here... his hand remained suspended in the air. Lucien noticed it too. His voice softened. "You remember." Caelum gave the faintest nod. "I remember everything." Then he pushed. The bronze doors groaned. Dust poured from their hinges. Slowly... the entrance widened. Darkness waited beyond.

Aurora expected another vast chamber. Instead... she saw rows. Thousands of rows. Shelves. Books. Scrolls. Stone tablets. An enormous library stretched into the darkness beyond the doorway. Not destroyed. Preserved. Perfectly. The survivors had expected a throne room. A prison. A sanctuary. Instead... they had found the memory of an entire civilization. Aurora stepped inside. Dust rose around her boots. She reached for the nearest shelf. Every scroll remained untouched. Every book rested exactly where its owner had left it. As if the people who lived here had simply stood up... and never returned.

Behind her, Lucien whispered words Aurora never thought she would hear. "The city didn't lose its history..." His silver eyes swept across the endless library. "It has been waiting for someone to read it." Caelum walked deeper into the hall. Without speaking. Without looking back. His footsteps echoed between the towering shelves until they disappeared into the darkness. Aurora watched him go. Then she noticed something. At the very end of the library... far beyond the last row of shelves... a single white robe disappeared behind a stone archway. Just for an instant. Long dark hair. Graceful steps. No face. By the time Aurora blinked... the figure was gone. She drew in a sharp breath. "She was here..."
