Hermione forcibly suppressed the urge to complain.
Whatever. Let him do his thing.
Not like I'm the one getting screwed.
What she didn't know: Fury had his own reasons for not selecting Black Widow and others.
Natasha already had a good relationship with Hermione. Coulson had established connections too. Both could learn through private channelsâno need for official assignment.
More importantly, his most trusted lieutenants were few. They had other missions. Couldn't spend all day studying mystical knowledge.
Hermione wasn't the only one confused. The agents exchanged glances, mutual bewilderment clear.
Director Fury gathered them here, said it was an important missionâhighest secrecy level. Warned them not to leak anything under any circumstances.
Then brought them to meet... a weirdly dressed little girl?
Hermione rarely appeared publicly. Most of her time was at Hogwarts. Even when she returned, she stuck with Pepper and Tony. Plus Fury only let a handful of people contact herânot even in official files. Very few knew wizards existed.
Their confusion was understandable.
"Starting today, you're students in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Mystical Knowledge Training Program. You'll become the backbone of our Supernatural and Occult Response Team."
Fury pointed at Hermione. "She's your instructor. Everything in this classroom is under her authority. I'm granting her Level 9 clearance... Whatever your agent level, in this classroom, you obey her."
The news stunned them.
An eleven- or twelve-year-old girl as their teacher? And they had to obey?
Worst of allâLevel 9 clearance??
That was Maria Hill's level. In all of S.H.I.E.L.D., only Secretary Pierce and Director Furyâboth Alpha-level, Level 10 agentsâranked higher than Hill.
Alexander Pierce served on the World Security Council, rarely managing S.H.I.E.L.D. directly. Meaning... this little girl was Fury's second-in-command?
You're kidding!
Seeing their confusion, Fury explained. "She'll show you another side of the world. Introduce you to the mysteries of magicâ"
Their eyes widened, as if confirming they'd heard correctly.
Magic?
They knew about enhanced individuals. S.H.I.E.L.D. detained plenty. But magic?
First they'd heard of it.
"Hi, everyone!"
Hermione waved, flashing a sweet smile.
"I'm Hermione Granger. I'm a witch. At the Director's invitation, I'm serving as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mystical consultant. Starting today, I'm your teacher!"
"Please take care of me!"
Fury's cheek twitched.
Pfftâ
Barton and the others glanced between Fury and Hermione. Wanted to laugh but didn't dare. Struggling to hold it in.
Then they processed what she'd said.
Wait, what?
Witch?
Today's not April Fools'.
If not for their professional S.H.I.E.L.D. training, they'd have turned and walked out.
"Oppugno!"
Without warning, Hermione hit them with a full-power spell.
Instantly, everyone was slammed to the floor by immense force. Couldn't move.
Crossbones Rumlow's veins bulged. Tried to push upâbut felt like a massive weight sat on him. No matter how hard he tried, couldn't budge an inch.
As the pressure intensified, bones began creaking. Blood trickled from noses.
"Miss Witch!"
Fury shouted.
These were S.H.I.E.L.D. elite agents. If Hermione injured them seriously, his losses would be massive.
"Hmph!"
Hermione reluctantly lifted the curse.
"If not for the Director's sake, I wouldn't waste my time teaching you ignorant Muggles."
Hermione planted her hands on her hips, puffing her cheeks indignantly.
Barton and the others struggled to their feet, shaken. Wariness flickered in their eyes as they looked at Hermione.
That little girl had casually gesturedâand these elite agents were powerless to resist.
Magic... magic...
"Miss Witch, it's our honor to attend your class. We were ignorant just now. Please don't take it to heart."
Their minds raced. Sitwell reacted first, bowing slightly, mimicking Fury's respectful tone. A hint of deference entered his gaze.
Hermione looked at the bespectacled, refined-looking bald man. She nodded, quite satisfied.
HYDRA speaks so nicely!
"Good, good, Agent Sitwell." She patted his shoulder approvingly.
Seeing them all cowed by that display, Fury relaxed.
As expectedâfastest way to establish authority is through strength.
But... what was that just now? Another new spell?
Fury's expression grew serious.
Seemed like every time he saw Hermione, she demonstrated spells he'd never seen before.
Did she already know them? Or learn them at school?
How much does she actually know... Even if she's a witch, can a student really master all this?
Hermione ignored Fury. Let him wonder. He'd never figure it out.
"I'll hand out two textbooks. Read them first. Ask me if you don't understand."
She picked up the small bag beside her, rummaging inside.
"Huh... where'd I put them?"
Watching Hermione peer into the bag, the agents were speechless.
It's that small. You can see everything at a glance. How long are you gonna search?
Forgot to bring them? Just say so.
Sure, she has magic, but she's still just a kid... Wait. WHAT THEâ?!
Hermione had flipped the bag upside down. Started shaking it vigorously.
Under their dumbfounded stares, items poured out one after another.
Books, broomsticks, bottles and jars, cauldrons, flowerpots, clothes, pillows, chessboards, snacks...
Ten seconds. The pile on the floor reached human height.
Even Furyâwho thought he'd gotten used to Hermione's anticsâfroze.
How did all that fit in such a small bag?
Is that bag some kind of dimensional pocket?!
And stop putting EVERYTHING in there!
Cauldrons, flowerpots, broomsticksâwhat the hell!
"Mmph! Mmph!"
Buried in the mountain of items, only Hermione's legs stuck out, kicking wildly.
Just as Bartonâunable to watch anymoreâmoved to help, Hermione finally struggled free, gasping for air.
"Phew... almost suffocated."
Then she raised several books triumphantly, waving them around.
"Found them!"
