Hazrat Asiya (RA), also known as Asiya bint Muzahim, is one of the most honored women in Islamic history. She is remembered as a symbol of faith, courage, and patience. Despite living in the palace of one of the most powerful and cruel rulers in history, she remained steadfast in her belief in Allah.
She was the wife of Pharaoh, the tyrant ruler of Egypt during the time of Moses (AS). Pharaoh claimed to be a god and oppressed the Children of Israel. However, Asiya (RA) did not share his arrogance and disbelief. Her heart was pure, and she was known for her kindness and compassion.
The Adoption of Prophet Musa (AS)
One of the most beautiful moments in her life was when baby Musa (AS) was placed in a basket and set afloat on the Nile River by his mother to save him from Pharaoh's soldiers. The basket reached the palace, and Asiya (RA) found the child.
When Pharaoh wanted to kill the baby, she pleaded with him, saying that the child could be a comfort for them and might benefit them. Because of her insistence, Musa (AS) was spared and raised in the royal palace under her care.
Allah says in the Qur'an that she said:
"A comfort of the eye for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us or we may adopt him as a son."
Thus, she became the foster mother of Prophet Musa (AS), showing her mercy and motherly love.
Her Faith in Allah
As Musa (AS) grew up and later declared his prophethood, calling people to worship Allah alone, Asiya (RA) believed in him. Even though she lived in Pharaoh's palace, she secretly accepted the message of Tawheed (Oneness of Allah).
When Pharaoh discovered her faith, he became furious. He tried to force her to reject her belief, but she refused. She chose faith over power, truth over comfort, and Allah over worldly life.
Her Martyrdom
Pharaoh ordered severe punishment for her. According to Islamic tradition, she was tortured mercilessly. Despite the pain, she remained firm in her belief.
During her suffering, she made a beautiful dua (supplication) that is mentioned in the Qur'an:
"My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the wrongdoing people."
Allah accepted her prayer. She became one of the greatest female martyrs in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) mentioned that Asiya (RA) is among the four greatest women of Paradise.
Lessons from Her Life
The life of Hazrat Asiya (RA) teaches us many powerful lessons:
True faith does not depend on environment.
A believer must stand for truth, even against powerful ظلم (oppression).
Patience in hardship brings eternal reward.
Worldly luxury has no value compared to faith in Allah.
She lived in a palace but chose Paradise. She had a throne but chose سجود (prostration). Her story is a shining example of courage, belief, and sacrifice.
May Allah grant us faith like Hazrat Asiya (RA) and make us steadfast in truth. Ameen.
