Chapter 34 - CHAPTER 33 — THE DEADLY ESCALATION

The arena pulsed with a dark energy that hadn't been there before. Platforms rose and fell violently, mist thickened until visibility dropped to barely a few feet, and every zone the shadow forest, storm canyon, mirror chamber, lava cavern, and swamp began merging into a single chaotic battlefield.

From the swirling mist, new beasts emerged.

Obsidian Wraiths, humanoid figures made entirely of black smoke, with claws sharp as blades. Their attacks cut through shadows and magic alike.

Thunder Serpents, massive snakes crackling with electricity, slithering across molten lava and icy platforms simultaneously.

Nightmare Stags, antlers glowing like molten silver, charging through the forest and swamp with terrifying speed.

The First Fatality — Merek Ashford

Merek, a B-rank student with wind magic, had been navigating the storm canyon. He created a tornado to clear a path through a swarm of shadow serpents. But one serpent, faster than expected, lunged from a fissure in the ground. Merek overextended his spell.

The tornado pulled too many rocks with it, one jagged stone smashing into the platform beneath him. The ground cracked violently.

No! Merek shouted, trying to leap to safety, but a second serpent struck him midair. He fell into the chasm, arms flailing, wind magic sputtering out. A final, echoing scream pierced the arena as the mist swallowed him.

Students nearby froze, horror rippling through the group.

Lyra's chains lashed instinctively toward the abyss, but it was too late. Mira's ice blasts froze over the edge in vain. Kael's shadow blades twisted to strike, but there was nothing to save him.

Lyra Nocturne

Lyra barely had time to process Merek's death. Roots and shadow wolves lunged at her, but her mark pulsed fiercely. She swung her chains in wide arcs, binding wolves and cutting through the forest's attacking branches.

I can't die here. Not now. Not like him, she thought, adrenaline coursing. Every movement was precise, every strike measured. Her shadow chains extended, wrapping around a charging Nightmare Stag, yanking it off course, while she darted across floating roots to higher ground.

The forest itself seemed alive, reacting to her fear and determination. Roots twisted like serpents, branches lashed like whips, but Lyra moved like water through the chaos.

Mira Veylin

Mira's ice platforms had collided with Joran's lava cavern. Steam hissed, melting ice into slick, dangerous surfaces. Lava beasts lunged at her, while shards of ice slid beneath her feet.

She conjured a controlled whirlwind, lifting debris and molten rocks alike, keeping them away from herself and the group. One ice serpent lunged at a fellow student, and Mira struck it midair, freezing it solid before it could bite.

Her wind blasted shards of molten rock skyward, but some fell dangerously close. She barely dodged, twisting midair, feeling the heat singe her hair.

Kael Veythorn

Kael's shadow labyrinth had expanded into the swamp. Tentacle-like shadows reached for him and the others. Phantom wolves leapt from the mist.

He moved with deadly efficiency, cutting through shadows, using them to protect Lyra and Elara. One tentacle struck unexpectedly at Elara's legs, but Kael's shadow blade intercepted, slicing it cleanly.

Every step counts. One slip, and we die, he thought, scanning every movement of the beasts around them.

Second Fatality — Lena Veyrin

Lena, an F-rank student specializing in minor illusions, had tried to create a mirrored path over the swamp. The shadows reacted violently, twisting her illusions into solid, thorned forms that trapped her legs.

She screamed as a Nightmare Stag charged from behind, its antlers piercing through her illusions and into her side. She collapsed into the swamp, swallowed partially by black water and twisting reeds.

Her screams echoed through the mist. Other students froze, some unable to look, others shaking with fear and rage.

Lyra clenched her jaw. This… this is real. We can die here.

Joran Flint

Joran's lava beasts had begun adapting, learning patterns from his fire blasts. One surged unexpectedly, smashing a platform where a shadow serpent had just landed. Sparks flew. Joran leapt, flames blazing, creating a barrier to shield weaker students.

He noticed Mira slipping on an icy edge, and with a burst of fire, he melted part of the ice to stop her slide. Everyone has to survive. No one else dies today, he thought grimly.

Eryndor's Observation

From above, Principal Eryndor's violet eyes swept across the arena. A faint nod, almost imperceptible, and subtle shifts occurred: platforms rotated faster, a shadow beast appeared where a student's balance faltered, mist thickened to obscure vision.

The students had been tested before, but now the arena itself was trying to kill them.

Elara Moonshade

Elara's swamp had grown deadly. Shadow reeds lashed like whips, black water bubbled with unseen creatures. Her chains lashed desperately, trying to restrain tentacle-like vines. One vine snapped back violently, flinging a small student into the mist where it was swallowed by a Thunder Serpent.

She froze for a heartbeat, then surged forward, chains extending farther than ever, holding multiple tentacles at once. Her eyes glimmered with a newfound determination. I will not die here.
