Cheese's entire demeanor transformed. He launched upward, his jaws snapping shut around the cheese mid-air with a precision that would have impressed even Kaleb. He landed with a soft thud, his tail wagging furiously as he devoured his prize.
The tightness in my chest eased slightly as I threw yet another. He caught it again, this time adding a small spin before landing. His enthusiasm was... infectious, though I would never admit such a thing aloud.
"One more," I said, fully aware I was now negotiating with a wolf.
Cheese's tail wagged harder, his entire body wiggling with anticipation. I threw the cheese higher this time, testing his limits. He soared, catching it at the apex of his jump with a grace that seemed impossible for a creature of his build. When he landed, he looked at me with something that could only be described as pure joy.
And despite every ounce of logic telling me this was a waste of time, I found myself… not despising it.
