If it was going to be anyone, it would of course be the tempestuous and incendiary of our lot. He would be the one to give voice to the fact that we were all collectively hiding from.

I had an ego, but I was not stupidly wired to be so imperceptive that I couldn't detect the cognitive dissonance that had festered over time concerning the maggot.

I had started to recoil at any thought when I called her the slur. I didn't even need to say it out loud for the word to leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

And I noticed the way Kaleb's face flinched—just half an inch—when he spat the word 'maggot' like it physically hurt him to say it.

We were all lying to ourselves.

Pretending we were still the unified front we'd been before she arrived. 

I adjusted my glasses, a habitual gesture that bought me time to think.
