Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Night doesn't fall at once.

It seeps.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Like something watching from the edges.

I walk beside Nari.

Not too close.

Not too far.

Just enough to stay beside her… without making her feel trapped.

The streetlights flicker above us, casting long, uneven shadows across the empty road. Our footsteps echo in soft rhythm, but there's something missing now.

Her voice.

Nari, who used to fill silence so easily… now struggles to breath inside it.

Nari: That… that thing…

Her words come late.

Like she has to drag them out from somewhere deep.

Nari: What you did… that… that wasn't…

She stops.

Her fingers tighten around the strap of her bag.

I wait.

I don't interrupt.

Nari: He just… disappeared…

Hana: He didn't disappear.

My voice is quiet.

Careful.

Hana: He was punished.

The moment the words leave my mouth, I regret how they sound.

Too cold.

Too certain.

Nari flinches slightly.

Not visibly.

But I see it.

I always see it now.

She opens her mouth again.

Closes it.

Then finally—

Nari: Hana… I…

Her voice breaks.

And whatever she was going to say… never comes.

We reach her house.

She stops at the gate but doesn't look at me immediately.

When she finally does—

There it is.

That look.

Not hatred.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Distance.

Nari: I need time.

The words are soft.

Gentle.

But they land like something sharp inside my chest.

Hana: I understand.

She nods.

Too quickly.

Like she's trying to escape the moment.

Nari: Goodnight.

Hana: Goodnight.

She walks inside without turning back.

And for the very first time since the mirror spoke to me—

I feel alone again.

Inside my mind, the reflection is quiet.

Watching.

Waiting.

Morning comes like it always does.

Unchanged.

Unbothered.

Cruel in its normalcy.

I sit beside Nari in class.

Same seats.

Same room.

Same sunlight spilling through the windows.

But nothing is the same.

She sits a little farther away.

Nit enough for anyone else to notice.

But I do.

Of course I do.

Nari: Did you finish the notes from yesterday?

Her voice sounds normal.

Too normal.

Like she's trying to rebuild something fragile.

Hana: Yes.

I slide my notebook toward her.

Our fingers almost touch.

She pulls her hand back.

Quick.

Instinctive.

And there it is again.

Fear.

It flickers across her face before she hides it.

But it's too late.

I've already seen it.

Hana: Nari…

She looks at me.

Careful.

Like she's looking something unpredictable.

Hana: I would never hurt you.

Silence.

Hana: Or anyone innocent.

Her eyes search mine.

Looking for something.

Truth.

Lies.

Monsters.

Hana: You know me.

My voice softens.

Hana: I'm still me.

She hesitates.

That hesitation… hurts more than anything.

Nari: I… know.

But she doesn't sound convinced.

Not completely.

And that's enough to leave a crack between us.

Classes end.

The day drifts by like a shadow of what it used to be.

We walk home again.

This time through the narrow alley beside the college.

It's quieter here.

Less crowded.

Walls stained with time.

Air heavy with stillness.

And then—

A loud voice breaks the silence.

Harsh.

Angry.

Man's voice: How many times do I have to tell you?!

Nari stiffens beside me.

We both turn toward the sound.

Further down the alley—

A man stands over an old woman.

Fragile.

Bent.

Her hands tremble as she clutches a worn cloth bag.

Man: Useless old woman! You think this is a charity?!

He kicks the bag.

Vegetables spill across the dirty ground.

The old woman flinches.

Old woman: Please… I just needed—

Man: Shut up!

He raises his hand.

Something inside me snaps.

Cold.

Sharp.

Familiar.

Inside my mind—

She stirs.

Awake.

"Another one."

My fingers curl slowly.

Hana: Yes.

My heartbeat steadies.

Too steady.

"Cruel."

Hana: Yes.

The reflection's voice lowers.

Silk wrapping around a blade.

"Shall we?"

I take a step forward.

The world narrows again.

Just like before.

Just like the library.

Hana: Dev—

A hand grabs my wrist.

Warm.

Shaking.

Nari.

Nari: Hana… wait.

Her voice is soft.

But urgent.

I stop.

The word dies in my throat.

The reflection pauses.

Annoyed.

"Why?"

Nari steps in front of me.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Like she's placing herself between me… and something unseen.

Nari: Let me try.

Her voice trembles.

But she doesn't step back.

I stare at her.

Confused.

Hana: He's hurting her.

Nari: I know.

She takes a breath.

Deep.

Unsteady.

Then she walks forward.

Toward the man.

Toward the danger.

My chest tightens.

The reflection watches.

Silent.

Curious.

Nari: Excuse me…

Her voice is small.

But it reaches him.

The man turns.

Annoyed.

Man: What?

Nari flinches.

Just slightly.

But she doesn't run.

Nari: Please… don't hurt her like that.

He scoffs.

Man: Mind your own business.

Nari's hands tighten.

But she bows her head slightly.

Respectful.

Gentle.

Nari: She's elderly.

She kneels down slowly and starts picking up the scattered vegetables.

One by one.

Carefully.

Like they matter.

Like the woman matters.

Nari:  If there's a problem… we can solve it calmly.

The man watches her.

Confused now.

Thrown off balance.

This isn't what he expected.

No fear.

No challenge.

No fight.

Just… quiet kindness.

The old woman's eyes well with tears.

The man clicks his tongue.

Irritated.

But something shifts.

His anger doesn't disappear.

But it… loses shape.

Man: Tch. Whatever.

He turns away.

Muttering under his breath.

And walks off.

Just like that.

No blood.

No screams.

No shadows.

Silence return to the alley.

Nari exhales shakily.

Her hands still tremble as she gathers the last of the vegetables and places them back into the bag.

Nari:  Here…

She hands it back to the old woman with a small smile.

And then—

It's just us again.

Standing in the quiet.

I stare at Nari.

Something inside me feels… different.

Unfamiliar.

She looks at me.

Hana: You could've gotten hurt.

Nari:  I know.

She looks at me.

And whatever last night left behind… finally loosens it's grip—

There's less fear in her eyes.

Still there.

But softer.

Nari: But he didn't.

I don't respond.

Inside my mind—

The reflection speaks again.

Cold.

Displeased.

"You let him go."

Hana: Maybe.

The reflections voice sharpens.

"You had the chance."

I look at Nari.

At her trembling hands.

At her quiet strength she just showed.

Hana: And she had hers.

Silence.

Uncomfortable.

The reflection withdraws slightly.

Not gone.

Just… watching from deeper within.

Waiting.

"For now."

Her voice fades into a whisper.

"You'll see the truth again."

I don't answer.

Because now—

I'm no longer sure whose truth I believe.

We start walking again.

Side by side.

Not perfect.

Not fixed.

But something fragile… begins to rebuild.

And somewhere between shadow and light—

I take my first step without violence.
