Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: What Lives Below

The ground split wider.

Concrete cracked like glass under pressure, pieces falling into the darkness below. The air turned thick, heavy with something ancient something that didn't belong in the world above.

Another claw shot out.

Faster this time.

It dragged a second soldier screaming into the void.

Silence followed.

Then a low, guttural growl echoed from beneath.

Not wolf.

Not human.

Something older.

Vivian's chest tightened.

"What… is that?"

No one answered.

Not even the man.

For the first time since she'd seen him

He looked uncertain.

Jamo stepped in front of Vivian instantly, his body shifting, claws extending fully now.

"Stay behind me."

Lucas stood still.

Watching the darkness.

Not reacting.

Not moving.

The man turned slightly toward him.

"Command."

Lucas didn't respond.

The man's eyes narrowed.

"Lucas."

Still nothing.

Vivian noticed.

"He's not listening anymore."

The man didn't like that.

His grip tightened slightly on the device in his hand.

Below them

Something moved.

Slow.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

The growl came again.

Closer.

Jamo's voice dropped into something primal.

"It's coming up."

The ground trembled violently.

Then

It emerged.

A massive shape pulled itself from the darkness.

Clawed limbs.

Dark, matted fur.

But wrong.

Its body looked twisted, like it had been broken and rebuilt too many times.

Its eyes

Glowed.

Not gold.

Not human.

A deep, burning red.

Vivian took a step back without thinking.

"That's not a wolf."

Jamo didn't answer.

But his silence said enough.

The creature dragged itself fully onto the floor, towering over them.

It sniffed the air.

Then its head snapped toward Vivian.

Locked.

On her.

The man exhaled slowly.

"Well… this is unexpected."

The creature growled.

Low.

Hungry.

Vivian's pulse spiked.

"Why is it looking at me?"

Jamo's voice was tight.

"Because you're not like the others."

The creature took a step forward.

The ground cracked beneath its weight.

Lucas suddenly moved.

He stepped directly in front of Vivian.

Blocking the creature's path.

Jamo blinked.

"What"

The man frowned.

"That's not the command I gave."

Lucas didn't respond.

His stance was firm.

Protective.

The creature growled louder.

It lunged.

Lucas met it head-on.

The impact shook the entire chamber.

Vivian stumbled back.

"Lucas!"

They clashed

Raw force against controlled precision.

The creature swung a massive claw.

Lucas dodged.

Struck back.

Faster than anything human should be.

Jamo joined the fight instantly.

Together

They pushed it back.

Barely.

The man watched closely now.

Interest returning.

"Fascinating."

Vivian turned on him.

"What is that thing?!"

He didn't look at her.

"Something I didn't create."

That answer made it worse.

The creature roared.

A sound that rattled bones.

Then it shifted

Faster.

Smarter.

It grabbed one of the controlled soldiers and tore through him in one brutal motion.

Vivian's stomach twisted.

"That thing's learning."

Jamo's voice came sharp.

"Everything here is learning."

Lucas struck again, forcing the creature back.

But it didn't fall.

Didn't slow.

It adapted.

The man stepped forward slightly.

Almost curious now.

"Interesting evolution."

Vivian snapped.

"Stop studying it and help!"

He glanced at her.

"Why would I?"

Her chest tightened.

"Because it's going to kill all of us!"

He smiled faintly.

"Not all."

The creature's eyes snapped back to Vivian again.

Focused.

Locked.

Jamo saw it.

"It's targeting you."

Vivian's heart pounded.

"Why me?!"

The man answered quietly.

"Because you're not fully one thing."

The creature lunged again

This time straight for her.

Lucas moved instantly.

Intercepting it mid-air.

Jamo followed.

The impact sent all three crashing into the far wall.

The chamber shook violently.

Cracks spread across the ceiling.

Dust poured down.

The structure was failing.

Vivian looked around quickly.

"This place is coming down!"

No one argued.

Because it was obvious now.

The creature roared again

And this time

More movement came from the hole.

Another claw.

Then another.

Vivian's breath caught.

"There's more than one…"

Jamo's eyes darkened.

"We can't fight all of them."

Lucas stood again, breathing steady.

Unnatural.

Perfect.

The man stepped back slowly now.

Calculating.

For the first time

Retreating.

Vivian saw it.

"You're leaving."

He met her gaze.

"I don't lose resources unnecessarily."

Anger flared in her chest.

"You started this!"

He shrugged slightly.

"And I'll survive it."

Jamo growled.

"You're not walking away."

The man looked at him calmly.

"I already am."

He pressed something on his device.

A hidden door behind him slid open.

An escape route.

Vivian made a split-second, controversial decision.

She ran

Not toward safety.

Not toward Jamo.

Toward him.

"Vivian!" Jamo shouted.

She didn't stop.

If he escaped

Everything continued.

This war.

This control.

This nightmare.

She couldn't let him leave.

The man saw her coming.

And smiled.

"You're predictable."

Vivian lunged

But Lucas appeared in front of her.

Blocking her path.

She froze.

"Move."

Lucas didn't.

His eyes locked onto hers.

For a brief second

Something flickered.

Not control.

Not emptiness.

Him.

Vivian's voice softened.

"Lucas… please."

Behind him, the man stepped toward the exit.

Almost gone.

Jamo was still fighting the creature.

No time.

No options.

Vivian made another choice.

The hardest one yet.

She raised her hand

And struck Lucas.

Hard.

He didn't fall.

But he froze.

Just long enough.

Vivian pushed past him and ran for the man.

But just as she reached him

The ground beneath them collapsed again.

The creature's claw shot upward

Grabbing the man mid-step.

His calm finally broke.

For the first time

He shouted.

The claw dragged him down

Into the darkness.

Gone.

Vivian stumbled back, breathing hard.

The exit sealed behind him.

Jamo roared.

"Vivian, move!"

The ceiling cracked wide open.

More debris fell.

The creatures were climbing up.

Lucas grabbed her arm suddenly.

Strong.

Urgent.

"Go."

His voice

His real voice.

Vivian's eyes widened.

"Lucas"

"No time."

Jamo reached them.

"We're getting out now."

The chamber shook violently.

The walls began to collapse.

Vivian looked back once

At the hole.

At the darkness.

At what had just taken the most dangerous man they knew.

And then

Something climbed out again.

Bigger.

Worse.

And this time

It wasn't just looking at her.

It was smiling.
