Unlike in the JJK fandom, which hates Mei Mei, for good reason also, I didn't hate Mei Mei. In fact, as a character in anime, I quite like her because her behavior with money reminds me of myself. Always greedy about capitalizing on the maximum of what we give, whether it is human help, financial help or anything.
You need to squeeze every drop of cents you can collect.
While such characteristics have lots of flaws, personally, I was quite attracted to her personality regarding money, but my current self is different from my past self.
She will sell me off the moment someone gives her a sufficient enough paycheck. In that regard, I can trust her.
Predictable greed was far more reliable than loyalty. That was the kind of person you could work with.
Because of that, I followed her to a nearby coffee shop, and we both ordered. Mei Mei was the first to open her mouth.
"I didn't think the next head of Zenin would walk around the street without an escort. Are they really so arrogant to believe that nobody would hurt you, or are you strong enough to eliminate such threats?" Mei Mei said as she sipped her coffee as her eyes bore into me, like she was scrutinizing her potential client.
A smile formed on my lip as I heard her business-like speech. "I like how you put words in your sentences, how you enunciate them, and your facial expression, Mei Mei. On one side, you made it sound like one of a great family, like a common family, and on the other side, you complimented my strength without directly saying it, making me feel like some kind of special person. Are you always like that?"
Mei became silent at that. Looking at Naoya, he doesn't look hostile, though she didn't do anything that warranted any hostility, which means Naoya is genuinely asking her that.
"Oh my, did my way of talking intrigue you that much? This is how all the business people talk, I think." Mei said with a smile.
Unlike in the canon, currently she was in the JJK 0 style with her silver hair tied to the back like a ponytail with two strands of hair falling from both sides of her head.
"I see. Now back to the subject, why is an independent sorcerer like you, whose strength is of Grade 1, coming to meet a brat like me?"
Mei once again became silent; she never told him her power level. Which isn't possible if someone didn't do a minimum of research on her.
"Tell me, Naoya-san, do you know of me prior?"
"Who doesn't know of Mei Mei? Aren't you pretty famous in the Jujutsu world?"
He answered her without saying anything about the way he is currently talking... Mei Mei felt like she was facing one of her own kind.
Contrary to Mei Mei, Naoya was just enjoying his talk, which he considered to be like-minded to his previous life.
It's fun to talk like everything is under control. I thought to myself. I knew if some brat like stated to talk like this, Mei Mei probably thought I had 8th grade syndrome or something, but even then, I still like to reminisce about the past.
In business, communication holds a really big deal. Even if you know nothing about your opposition, you will talk like you know everything. Business is pretty much a pretend game where the strongest pretender wins.
"So why do you come to meet me?" I asked.
"I came to introduce myself to the next head of the Zenin clan."
Ah.
"I'm a businesswoman," she continued. "And in my line of work, relationships are everything."
Her gaze held mine steadily.
"Establishing a connection early… tends to pay off in the long run."
I let out a quiet breath through my nose. Of course. She wasn't here for a job. She was here for positioning. Future investment, if you will.
"So this is networking," I said.
"If you'd like to call it that." There was no shame in her tone. Which, ironically, made it more trustwowill for me.
"I see," I murmured then she reached into her sleeve and pulled out a small, neatly designed card.
She placed it on the table and slid it toward me.
"My contact information," she said. "In case you ever require my services."
I picked it up between two fingers and glanced at it.
"Rates negotiable?" I asked casually.
Her lips curved slightly. "Depending on the client and work."
I huffed a quiet laugh. "Fair enough."
The conversation had reached its natural conclusion. She stood up smoothly, adjusting her sleeve.
"Well then," she said, "it was a pleasure meeting you, Naoya-san."
"Likewise."
She turned to leave and just as she took her first step—
"Wait a minute."
She stopped. Just enough to show she had expected something like this then she glanced back over her shoulder.
"Yes?"
A small smile formed on my lips as I leaned back in my chair again.
"I might have something for you," I said as I thought of a job for her.
