Chapter 4 - 4

By the time Lu Yige woke up on the weekend, it was already close to eleven.

She had turned off her alarm before going to bed, and Aunt Liu hadn't come to wake her up either—probably wanting to let her sleep a little longer.

She drew the curtains open, and sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating every corner of the room.

It was wonderful.

Back when she was in high school, weekends barely existed. She only got one afternoon off a week and had to get up at five-thirty every morning.

The world inside a novel was indeed much more leisurely—otherwise, there wouldn't be time for the plot to unfold.

After washing up, Lu Yige went downstairs and happened to run into her mother heading up.

"Mom," she called out.

Mother Lu pinched her cheek. "You little lazybones. I was just about to come wake you. Lunch is ready."

Lu Yige hooked her arm around her mother's and hurried downstairs. "I'm starving."

Once seated at the dining table, she noticed that Jiang Yu wasn't there.

Seeing her daughter craning her neck to look around, Mother Lu smiled knowingly. "Are you looking for Xiao Yu? He went out this morning."

"Oh." Lu Yige looked a little disappointed.

"You've already started keeping an eye on your own man?" Mother Lu teased.

"Mom—" Lu Yige dragged out the word coquettishly. "What 'my man'? I'm still a child."

Mother Lu ladled a bowl of fish soup and placed it in front of her. "Yes, yes—such a child, sleeping until noon."

"I didn't sleep until noon," Lu Yige muttered. "It's not even noon yet."

She changed the subject. "Mom, when do you think Dad will be home?"

"In a few months," Mother Lu said, stirring the soup with her spoon. "The branch office is very busy. The Shanghai market is important."

"Don't you miss him?"

"Silly child, what kind of question is that? Don't you miss him?" Mother Lu laughed.

"Of course I do."

"I miss him too," Mother Lu said, then added meaningfully, "but Yige, remember this—don't put all your energy into wondering where a man is, and don't stand still waiting. You have to make him come after you."

Lu Yige nodded blankly.

Mother Lu patted her head. "This might be a bit early to say, but by the way, the Chi family sent over an invitation today. Their younger son's birthday is next Saturday. You and Xiao Yu should go together."

"With Jiang Yu?"

"Yes. Take him out and let him get acquainted with people. You'll be attending these kinds of occasions often in the future."

After lunch, Lu Yige went back to her room and saw that Jiang Yu had sent her a message.

"I'm studying at the library. You hadn't gotten up yet, so I didn't wake you."

Seeing the message, Lu Yige rolled her eyes hard. He might as well not have sent it at all.

She knew perfectly well where he was. On weekends, Jiang Yu and Jiang Nian always went out to work part-time—Saturday at the library, Sunday at a café.

And yet he still deliberately sent her a message to fool her.

This guy really had too much drama.

Lu Yige couldn't be bothered to reply and went to the music room to practice the piano instead.

Previously, the Lu household had only owned an electronic keyboard. She had always dreamed of having a piano of her own—never expecting that wish to be fulfilled here.

Lu Yige only had two hobbies: mathematics and piano.

She played the pieces she loved, slowly passing the leisurely afternoon—

Until a voice broke the calm.

"This piece sounds pretty nice."

Jiang Yu stood at the doorway, leaning lightly against the doorframe. Afternoon sunlight fell across his face, making him seem almost radiant.

Lu Yige shot him a glance, silently cursing him for interrupting her practice, but replied aloud, "Sonata in G Major, first movement."

Jiang Yu lowered his head. "I don't really understand."

"Jiang Nian does," Lu Yige said.

He froze for a moment, then quickly said, "She doesn't play as well as you."

Lu Yige already knew that.

Jiang Nian did like the piano, but piano training depended heavily on starting young. Jiang Nian had begun too late, so her level was average. It was only natural that she couldn't compare to someone like Lu Yige, who had learned from childhood and genuinely loved it.

Not wanting to waste words on him, Lu Yige said directly, "Next week is Chi Yexuan's birthday. My mom said we're going together."

"Wouldn't that be a bit inappropriate?" he asked.

"It's fine." Seeing Jiang Yu's conflicted expression made Lu Yige want to laugh. He clearly wanted to go, yet still felt the need to put on a show for her.

Didn't he get tired of acting all day long? Even watching him was exhausting.

But she wasn't much better herself. Lu Yige sighed and continued playing.

Back in his room, Jiang Yu stared absentmindedly at a small dinosaur keychain in his hand.

It was a gift from Jiang Nian, who had said it somehow resembled him.

He didn't quite understand why she thought so, but he had still hung it on his backpack.

After a while, he took it down again and put it into a drawer.

The weekend passed quickly. When Lu Yige was woken by her seven o'clock alarm, she thought exactly that.

The damned college entrance exam—she had to go through it again. The hell of senior year—she had to experience it again. Was there no justice in the world?

As usual, Jiang Yu got out of the car early when they were nearing school, but Lu Yige didn't follow. She couldn't be bothered to walk.

Monday mornings were always her least energetic time. Fortunately, the first class was mathematics, which offered some comfort.

A few minutes before the end of the lesson, the math teacher left them with a challenging problem, saying that if they could solve it, they wouldn't need to worry about the final question on the end-of-term exam. He gave them a full day to think it over.

Xu Lu shouted, "Teacher, I'm going to report you to the dean for leaking exam questions!"

The whole class burst into laughter.

The math teacher stroked his sparse remaining hair and laughed. "Genius, don't wrong me like that."

Xu Lu clearly disliked the nickname and immediately fell silent.

Lu Yige didn't join in the commotion—first, to maintain her persona, and second, because she was genuinely excited.

She got excited whenever she saw math. She got even more excited when she saw difficult math problems. And when she saw a math problem that seemed impossible to solve, she was beyond excited.

She spent an entire break calculating without getting anywhere, then continued working as soon as the next class began.

Jiang Yu reminded her, "Class has already started."

Lu Yige glanced at the biology teacher on the podium and kept calculating.

She had learned these concepts ages ago. Listening or not made no difference.

Jiang Yu frowned slightly but said nothing more.

Near the end of biology class, Lu Yige finally worked out the answer. She collapsed onto her desk with a single thought: That was satisfying.

As soon as class ended, Xu Lu came running over.

Lu Yige stared at him. "What are you doing? Aren't you doing eye exercises?"

Xu Lu could only retreat back to his seat reluctantly.

When the last syllable of the broadcast ended, Lu Yige heard the sound of a chair scraping back.

She opened her eyes and, sure enough, saw Xu Lu waving a piece of scrap paper as he ran toward her, shouting, "Check answers, check answers!"

"How childish," Lu Yige scoffed. "I got five. What about you?"

"You're wrong—ha! It's obviously seven," Xu Lu said confidently.

"Believe it or not, you'll find out tomorrow that I'm right."

"It's seven. I calculated for half the class period," Xu Lu said, slapping the paper down in front of her.

Tch—only half a period. Lu Yige picked up the paper and looked at it. After staring for a long time, she snapped, "Genius, who can even read this chicken scratch of yours?"

"Don't call me that. You can call me 'prodigy' instead," Xu Lu said, glancing at his paper. "A prodigy's scratch work has to be unconventional. I thought your level was about the same as mine—turns out you're just an ordinary person."

"A prodigy who got the wrong answer?"

"I told you, mine is correct. I checked it three times—there's absolutely no mistake."

"Five."

"Seven."

"Five!" Lu Yige realized she was becoming childish too.

"Seven!!!" Xu Lu was small, but his voice was astonishingly loud, drawing the attention of everyone in the classroom.

Lu Yige: ...

So this was a contest of volume now?

She changed tactics, pretending to be so worked up that she couldn't catch her breath, wheezing and coughing.

Xu Lu immediately panicked. "Are you okay?"

Lu Yige wheezed and reached out dramatically. "Medicine—give me my medicine."

"What medicine?"

"Chewable—"

"Enough! Are you sick or what?" Xu Lu said, laughing as he spoke.

"I am sick. I'm a patient," Lu Yige said, laughing along with him.

Beside them, Jiang Yu cleared his throat softly. Lu Yige looked over and saw that he had poured her a cup of water.

"Oh, right," Xu Lu suddenly remembered something. "Jiang Yu, switch seats with me. We need to discuss the problem."

Lu Yige was about to object when she suddenly remembered—wasn't Xu Lu's seatmate Jiang Nian?

So she nodded and said, "Please switch for now. You can switch back when class starts."

"Not switching back is fine too," Xu Lu said.

Jiang Yu said nothing and gave up his seat.
