Chapter 5 - 5

Jiang Yu moved to Xu Lu's seat. Jiang Nian was resting beside it, lying facedown on her desk.

When she saw Jiang Yu sit down, she turned slightly, her eyes peeking out from where her arms were folded, blinking up at him. "Xiao Yu."

Jiang Yu responded softly, "Mm."

"Xiao Yu, you're really good-looking."

"Did you only realize that today?"

Jiang Nian chuckled and continued, "Yeah, just today. Oh, right—Chi Yexuan came to see me again yesterday afternoon. He's really annoying."

"If you find him annoying, you don't have to pay attention to him."

"But he doesn't seem that bad either. He even took me to—"

Jiang Yu had no interest whatsoever in hearing about Jiang Nian and Chi Yexuan, but it would have been awkward to interrupt her outright, so he replied perfunctorily.

As she spoke, Jiang Nian noticed that Jiang Yu seemed distracted. He was usually a very attentive listener, but today there was impatience in his brows, and he kept glancing back repeatedly.

"What are you looking at?" Jiang Nian asked.

"Nothing." Jiang Yu suddenly stood up. "Class is about to start."

With that, he left.

As Jiang Yu walked back to his seat, he saw Lu Yige and Xu Lu huddled together, chatting animatedly.

"You really are a genius, Xu Lu." Lu Yige slapped the desk. "Managing such a complicated calculation—and you still managed to write three times five equals twenty-five! And you even swore you checked it three times."

"Hmph." Xu Lu was unconvinced.

"And you kept insisting I was wrong," Lu Yige pressed on. "Kept insisting."

"Damn it." Xu Lu bristled. "Why are you fixated on one tiny mistake? Why don't you mention that my method was simpler than yours?"

Lu Yige grinned. "So what? You're the one who got it wrong. I wish you 148 points on your finals."

"Vicious woman," Xu Lu said, puffing out his cheeks.

Watching Lu Yige's smug expression and her bright, uninhibited smile, Jiang Yu felt an inexplicable sense of unease. Lu Yige seemed to like him very much—yet she had never smiled like this in front of him.

He walked over to Xu Lu and knocked lightly on the desk. "Class is starting."

"Oh." Xu Lu shot a glare at the still-smiling Lu Yige, then packed up and left.

Jiang Yu returned to his seat. Lu Yige immediately reined in her smile and took out her textbook, flipping through it with an air of seriousness.

"Yige," he leaned in and called softly.

Lu Yige shuddered. What was he suddenly trying to do?

"Yige, do you not like me anymore?" Jiang Yu was very close to her. His voice was as light as a feather, his dark eyes fixed straight on her.

Impressive.

Using the handsome-man tactic with such mastery—your future is limitless, young man.

Lu Yige was in turmoil inside but calm on the surface. "Why would you think that?"

"You tell me." Jiang Yu looked as though his eyes held only her. His soft hair fell just above his eyes, making him look pitiful.

Lu Yige lowered her gaze. "You should know—I only like you."

Seeing that Jiang Yu did not press further, Lu Yige let out a quiet sigh of relief. This scumbag actually had a strong sense of crisis.

What did he take her for? As if she would fall for a one-meter-sixty kid.

Over the next few days, Lu Yige clearly felt that Jiang Yu had become much more attentive toward her.

This manifested in daily morning-and-evening cheesy lines, mysteriously refilled cups of water, and neatly organized notes taken for her whenever she didn't feel like listening in class.

And every morning, he no longer got out of the car early on the way to school.

By now, the entire school already knew that the Lu family was grooming talent in advance and sponsoring Jiang Yu.

In Chinese class, Lu Yige spent the entire period doing math homework again. After class, she looked at the notes Jiang Yu had prepared for her and felt helpless.

There was really no need. Truly no need.

Although she liked his handwriting—it was very nice—she would honestly never read these notes even once.

She chose her words carefully. "Um, Jiang Yu, you don't need to take notes for me. I won't read them."

Jiang Yu lowered his eyes. "Whether you read them is your business. Whether I take them is mine."

"And I want to go to the same university as you, so you can't be weak in any subject."

Lu Yige: "..."

You really underestimate me. Just because I like math doesn't mean I'm bad at everything else.

"Alright." Lu Yige accepted the notes. "You're right. I can't be weak in any subject."

Just wait—at the finals, I'll show you exactly how unbalanced I am or am not.

On Friday evening, the custom-made formalwear that Mother Lu had ordered for Lu Yige and Jiang Yu arrived.

For a wealthy heir like Chi Yexuan, a birthday celebration was often more than just a birthday—it was more like a social gathering for prominent local families.

Naturally, appearances had to be formal.

Lu Yige remembered that in the novel, this was her first official appearance. In earlier chapters, she had only been mentioned in passing a few times.

"She stood beside Jiang Yu—the eldest daughter of the Lu family, Lu Yige. She wore a pale white gown, her jet-black hair falling to her waist. With no excessive adornments, she appeared pale and slender, carrying a fragile kind of beauty."

This was how the novel described her entrance. Lu Yige remembered it vividly. At the time, she had felt that this minor supporting character—who appeared only occasionally—resembled her in subtle ways beyond just sharing the same name.

Looking at the gown her mother had commissioned, the imagined white dress took on tangible form.

Simple yet distinctive; elegant without being ostentatious.

Her mother's taste was excellent—she sincerely thought so.

After putting it on, she felt that there could hardly be a dress in the world better suited to her.

Jiang Yu emerged at just that moment, already changed into a black suit.

Seeing the two of them standing together, Mother Lu's eyes were filled with smiles. "What a perfect match."

"Mom."

"It's the truth," Mother Lu said with a laugh. "Am I not allowed to say it?"

Lu Yige glanced quietly at Jiang Yu. She had to admit—his physical attributes were truly outstanding. Long legs, broad shoulders, and eyes that seemed to smile even when they didn't. He was looking back at her.

"Do you think it's suitable?" he asked.

Lu Yige nodded. "Very handsome."

"You're very beautiful too," Jiang Yu said, smiling at her.

Too scheming, unfortunately. Lu Yige avoided his gaze.

That evening at the birthday banquet, Mother Lu had prepared a gift for them. Lu Yige couldn't tell what it was, but she knew it would be impeccable.

When Lu Yige and Jiang Yu entered, all eyes in the room turned toward them.

He in black, she in white—Lu Yige wearing a gentle smile, Jiang Yu with a cool, indifferent gaze. Surprisingly, they looked harmonious together.

Chi's parents came forward to greet them.

"Uncle, Auntie," Lu Yige greeted them.

"Yige is getting more and more beautiful," Chi's mother said with a smile. "When you were little, I even thought about having you as my daughter-in-law."

"Mom," Chi Yexuan complained from the side.

"This child is becoming more and more ill-mannered," Chi's mother said apologetically. "He was so happy when I mentioned it back then."

Lu Yige smiled. She knew it was just polite talk. Families like theirs would never marry a sickly young lady who wouldn't live past twenty-five.

"And this young man is...?"

"This is Jiang Yu," Lu Yige introduced.

"Mmm." Chi's mother nodded. "I've heard about him. Your mother has a good eye—sponsoring a talented child. Ye Xuan says Xiao Yu ranks among the top in his grade."

She glanced at Chi Yexuan.

Chi Yexuan snorted and said nothing.

Suddenly, his gaze shifted toward the entrance, his eyes filled with amazement.

Lu Yige didn't look over, but she knew—

The true protagonist of tonight's birthday banquet had arrived.

Author's note:

Xu Lu: You're the one who's one meter sixty! You're the one who's one meter sixty! I told you, sooner or later I'll be one meter ninety.
