Chapter 3: The Competition
The day of the Mathematics Competition finally arrived.
Amara woke up early and got ready for school. She looked at herself in the mirror and took a deep breath.
"Today, I will do my best," she said.
Author's thought:Amara was nervous, but I was proud of her. Winning was important to her, but what mattered most was that she was willing to try.
When she arrived at school, she saw students from different classes gathering in the hall. The atmosphere was filled with excitement.
The Mathematics teacher walked over to her.
"Amara, are you ready?"
Amara smiled.
"Yes, ma. I am ready."
The students took their seats, and the competition began.
The first question appeared on the board.
Amara read it carefully and wrote her answer.
"Correct!" the teacher announced.
Amara smiled.
The questions became harder and harder.
Then came a question that Amara had never seen before.
She stared at it for a moment.
I don't know this one, she thought.
For a few seconds, she felt like giving up.
Then she remembered all the evenings she had spent practising.
She took a deep breath and started working through the problem step by step.
After a few minutes, she raised her hand.
"Answer, please," the teacher said.
Amara gave her answer.
The teacher checked it carefully.
"Correct!"
Amara's face lit up.
Author's thought:That moment showed me something important about Amara. She did not need to know everything immediately. She only needed to believe that she could figure things out.
Finally, the last question was given.
Everyone became quiet.
Amara looked at the question, smiled slightly, and began solving it.
A few minutes later, she put down her pencil.
The judges collected the papers.
"We will announce the results tomorrow," the principal said.
Amara walked home wondering what the result would be.
She had done her best.
And for the first time, she realised that sometimes the real victory is having the courage to keep going.
