Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: Beyond the Walls

The desert outside Veyra had always been silent.

Not peaceful.

Empty.

The old world had died out there long before the city was built. Broken highways, collapsed towers, and fields of rusted structures stretched across the wasteland like fossils of another age.

But now something new moved through that emptiness.

The storm.

---

From the highest tower of the Archive, the distortion could be seen clearly.

It twisted the horizon like heat above fire.

The sky above it bent unnaturally, clouds folding into spirals.

Lightning flickered inside the storm—but the lightning moved too slowly.

Like time itself had thickened inside the distortion.

Serah watched the horizon through binoculars.

"It's growing," she said.

Kai stood beside her.

"I know."

"How far now?"

"Thirty kilometers."

Serah lowered the binoculars.

"At this speed it reaches the city in two days."

Kai nodded.

"Yes."

---

Behind them, Lira scribbled in her notebook again.

She had drawn the storm three times already.

Each drawing slightly different.

"Something strange," she said quietly.

Kai glanced at her.

"That's becoming a theme."

"The storm isn't moving toward the city randomly."

She turned the notebook around.

"It's moving directly toward you."

Silence fell across the tower.

Serah stared at the map again.

"…She's right."

---

Inside the Archive command center, Marrow studied the same data.

The storm's trajectory pointed straight toward Veyra.

More specifically—

Toward one location.

The plaza where the seam battle had happened.

Marrow sighed quietly.

"So the second observer has chosen its stage."

---

Back on the tower, Kai exhaled slowly.

"So we have two options."

Serah crossed her arms.

"Which are?"

"We wait here."

"And?"

"Or we go meet it."

Serah looked at him like he had just suggested jumping off the tower.

"You want to walk into that?"

Kai shrugged slightly.

"It's already walking toward us."

Aris' voice came from the stairwell.

"Then we should intercept it."

Everyone turned.

She stepped onto the tower roof calmly.

"You're serious," Serah said.

Aris nodded.

"If that storm reaches the city, Veyra becomes the battlefield."

Kai looked back toward the horizon.

The spiral distortion twisted slowly across the desert.

Something massive moved inside it.

"You're suggesting we leave the walls."

"Yes."

Serah shook her head immediately.

"That's too dangerous."

Aris replied calmly.

"So is waiting."

---

Lira closed her notebook.

"I have a question."

Everyone looked at her.

"If the storm is connected to the observers behind the fracture…"

Kai nodded.

"Yes?"

"…then maybe it's not coming to destroy the city."

Silence.

"What else would it do?" Serah asked.

Lira looked toward the desert.

"Maybe it's coming to choose."

---

The wind shifted across the tower.

Dust from the distant wasteland drifted faintly across the horizon.

Kai made his decision.

"We leave at sunrise."

Serah frowned.

"That's not your decision alone."

"No," Kai said.

"But it's the one that prevents the storm from reaching the city."

Aris smiled faintly.

"For once, we agree."

---

High above the world, the two observers watched the conversation unfold.

One spoke quietly.

THE VARIABLE IS MOVING.

The other nodded.

GOOD.

THE TEST REQUIRES PROXIMITY.

---

Back in Veyra, the city prepared for something it had never done before.

A group was about to leave the safety of the walls.

And walk directly into a storm made of broken realities.
