Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: The Road That Should Not Exist

The gates of Veyra opened at sunrise.

They almost never did.

Most citizens had never seen the outside world.

From inside the walls, the wasteland looked like a distant memory—dust, broken towers, and endless silence.

But standing at the open gate…

It felt much larger.

And much more dangerous.

---

Kai stood at the front of the small convoy.

Two Archive vehicles.

Six soldiers.

Serah.

Aris.

Lira.

And the silver-haired man who had appeared again without anyone inviting him.

"Field trip," Kai muttered.

Serah glanced at him.

"This isn't a joke."

"Everything becomes a joke if you survive it."

"That's not comforting."

"Honesty rarely is."

---

The convoy rolled slowly into the wasteland.

The massive gates of Veyra closed behind them with a deep metallic echo.

For the first time in years—

Kai was outside the city.

The desert stretched endlessly in every direction.

But it wasn't empty.

Remnants of the old world stood half-buried in sand.

Broken highways.

Collapsed towers.

Rusting satellite dishes pointing at a sky that had already changed.

Lira leaned out the vehicle window.

"…This place looks like the past died here."

Kai nodded.

"Something like that."

---

They drove for an hour before the first anomaly appeared.

A road.

Perfectly intact.

Cutting straight across the desert.

Aris frowned.

"That shouldn't be here."

Serah checked the map.

"It isn't."

The road looked new.

Fresh asphalt.

Clean lines.

Like it had been built yesterday.

Kai stepped out of the vehicle.

The warmth inside his chest flickered again.

"That's not a road," he said quietly.

"What is it?" Lira asked.

He crouched beside it.

Touched the surface.

The road rippled.

Like liquid.

"…It's a memory," he said.

Aris raised an eyebrow.

"A memory of what?"

Kai stood slowly.

"A world where this road was never destroyed."

---

The silver-haired man spoke from behind them.

"Fragments."

Kai didn't turn.

"Yes."

The man looked toward the horizon.

"When timelines collapse, pieces remain."

"And they settle here."

Lira looked down the road.

"…So this is another world's past."

"Yes," Kai said.

"Or another world's future."

---

They continued driving.

The closer they moved toward the storm—

The stranger the wasteland became.

Buildings appeared that shouldn't exist.

Cars half-buried in sand started engines for a moment… then died again.

Shadows sometimes moved in the wrong direction.

Reality itself was thinning.

---

After three hours, the storm became visible.

Up close, it was enormous.

A spiral of twisted sky and shattered landscapes rotating slowly across the desert.

Pieces of other places appeared inside it.

Cities.

Forests.

Oceans.

All flickering in and out of existence.

Lira whispered:

"…It's beautiful."

Serah shook her head.

"It's catastrophic."

Kai stared at the storm.

And felt something new.

Recognition.

---

The silver-haired man watched him carefully.

"You feel it."

Kai nodded.

"Yes."

"What is it?"

Kai spoke quietly.

"That storm isn't just a distortion."

Everyone looked at him.

"It's a crossroads."

Aris crossed her arms.

"For what?"

Kai looked at the swirling realities inside the storm.

"For every world that almost survived."

---

Lightning flickered inside the storm.

But this time—

It wasn't lightning.

A shape moved within the spiral.

Tall.

Humanoid.

Watching the convoy approach.

Lira whispered:

"…Is that the second observer?"

Kai didn't answer.

Because the figure inside the storm raised its head.

And began walking toward them.
