Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: The One Inside the Storm

The storm did not move like weather.

It moved like thought.

Reality folded inside the spiral, pieces of different worlds drifting past each other like shattered mirrors. A city skyline appeared for a moment… then dissolved into ocean waves… then into empty desert again.

The convoy stopped several hundred meters from the edge.

No one wanted to drive closer.

The air itself felt unstable.

---

Kai stepped out first.

The sand beneath his boots flickered between colors for a moment before settling again.

Serah followed.

Aris stepped out of the second vehicle, metal rod resting on her shoulder like usual.

Lira remained beside the car, notebook ready.

The silver-haired man simply watched the storm.

---

Inside the spiral—

The figure was clearer now.

Tall.

Human-shaped.

But not fully solid.

Its body shifted slightly between forms, like it existed in multiple possibilities at once.

The figure walked forward.

Not quickly.

Not threateningly.

Just… deliberately.

Each step made the storm ripple.

---

Kai felt the warmth inside his chest ignite again.

Stronger than ever before.

Not reacting.

Responding.

The figure stopped about twenty meters away.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then the figure tilted its head.

Its voice did not come through the air.

It came through the storm itself.

Through the distortion of reality.

Through the fracture in the sky far above them.

YOU ARRIVED FASTER THAN EXPECTED.

---

Serah stepped forward slightly.

"Who are you?"

The figure looked at her.

Then back at Kai.

THE VARIABLE BROUGHT YOU.

Aris frowned.

"That's not an answer."

The figure ignored her.

Its attention remained entirely on Kai.

---

Kai finally spoke.

"You're the Second Observer."

The figure nodded slowly.

CORRECT.

"Then the first one was behind the fracture."

ALSO CORRECT.

Lira wrote quickly.

Her pen almost scratched through the paper.

---

Kai crossed his arms.

"So this storm is your doing."

The figure considered the statement.

PARTIALLY.

Aris sighed.

"You people love vague answers."

The figure finally looked at her.

For the first time—

Its gaze felt heavy.

Like gravity increasing.

YOUR WORLD IS ONE POSSIBILITY.

THIS STORM HOLDS MANY OTHERS.

Kai glanced at the swirling realities inside the spiral.

Cities.

Mountains.

Entire landscapes flickering between existence.

"…Failed timelines," he said quietly.

The figure nodded.

ATTEMPTED OUTCOMES.

---

Serah stepped forward again.

"You're running an experiment."

The figure did not deny it.

WE OBSERVE DECISION STRUCTURES.

Aris blinked.

"That's the worst explanation I've ever heard."

Kai translated calmly.

"They're testing how civilizations respond to collapse."

The figure nodded again.

SIMPLIFIED. BUT ACCEPTABLE.

---

Lira finally asked the question everyone was thinking.

"What happens to the worlds that fail?"

The storm around them grew quieter.

Even the wind slowed.

The figure answered calmly.

THEY ARE STORED.

Everyone stared at the spiral.

All those broken landscapes.

All those lost cities.

Aris' voice lowered.

"You keep them."

THEIR CHOICES REMAIN VALUABLE.

---

Kai's expression hardened slightly.

"So this world is just another test."

The figure tilted its head again.

THIS WORLD IS DIFFERENT.

"Why?"

The figure took one step closer.

Reality rippled around its feet.

Then it pointed directly at Kai.

BECAUSE YOU BROKE THE PATTERN.

---

The storm pulsed violently for a moment.

Inside it—

Hundreds of possible worlds flickered.

Wars.

Cities burning.

Cities surviving.

Entire civilizations rising and falling in seconds.

Kai stared into the storm.

"…You're not looking for the strongest world."

NO.

"Then what?"

The figure's answer was quiet.

But it echoed across the desert.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT CHOICE.

---

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Aris said what everyone was thinking.

"And if we refuse to play your test?"

The figure looked at her.

Then at the storm.

Then back at the city far behind them.

THE TEST DOES NOT REQUIRE PERMISSION.

---

The spiral storm expanded slightly.

Just enough for everyone to understand how small they were beside it.

Kai stepped forward.

"Then why talk to us?"

The figure's answer came immediately.

BECAUSE YOU HAVE REACHED THE NEXT PHASE.

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"What phase?"

The figure raised one hand.

And the storm behind it split open.

Revealing something enormous hidden inside the spiral.

A structure.

A massive ring of fractured light floating between realities.

THE PHASE WHERE YOU CHOOSE FOR MORE THAN ONE WORLD.

---

Lira stopped writing.

Serah stared at the structure.

Aris whispered one word.

"…Impossible."

Kai felt the warmth inside his chest surge again.

Stronger than ever.

Because somehow—

He already knew what that structure was.
