Chapter 14 - Chapter fourteen

William's POV

I listened with horror to Kate's quivering voice, while I willed myself to stop trembling.

"I don't know." I said, in response to her question. My voice came out in whispers, showing just how worried I was.

"I don't think we should be bothered about them" I quickly added, when I felt Kate trembling more and more, beside me. By now, all three men were a few feet close, and even though I did everything within my power to hide it, I was melting in fear within me.

"Are you the parents of the boy? " One of the men asked, casting a side glance at Stuart's grave.

"We are" I replied after some time, not sure what they were driving at. Kate was still very much in a state of panic to think of any answers, let alone provide any.

"I am very sorry for your loss. " The man who had spoken earlier said. If either of them knew or remembered me from yesterday, they did nothing to show it.

They walked farther to a grave, which was close to Stuart's, and dropped some flowers.

I felt Kate ease up a bit but I didn't. For all I know these men are keeping an eye on us, and I think I know why. Crawford's words chose that moment to replay in my head, making me shiver in fear.

"I'm suddenly feeling sick." Kate suddenly announced, tucking at my arm.

"We should head home." She added after some time, and I couldn't be more relieved.

With a slight nod to the men whose focus was now on us, I led Kate to the spot where the SUV was parked.

"Are these men following us? " Kate suddenly asked after we were seated in the car.

I looked up to see all three men from a distance, side by side with each other, walking towards the car.

"Is that...a gun?" Kate added, her voice coming out in half scream, and half whisper.

Without looking at the men for confirmation, I started the car and headed straight to the nearest station. I congratulated myself on the decision I made when a white SUV pulled into the road behind us, in hot pursuit.

At a very close distance to the station, I slowed down. Kate, who was breathless, inquired why I slowed down with her eyes.

"No harm will come to us here," I replied, casting a glance at the station to give her a clue. I was breathless myself, but I needed to act brave.

Just then, the white SUV behind ours sped past us, and we noticed that the occupants of the vehicle were different from the men we were running from, plus it has no plate number.

"What a relief. " Kate pointed out.

"Are you sure they had a gun back there? " I asked Kate whose eyes widened in disbelief.

"Are you seriously asking me that? " She retorted, pissed.

"I need to be sure, before making a report. " I explained.

"You can go back and find out. " She answered, while I looked out of the window.

"You don't mean that, do you? " I asked, turning to face her.

"Look, William, I know what I saw. One of the men had a gun." She explained, in an unusually slow manner.

"Fine. We should head inside the station to make a report. " I suggested, reaching for the door.

"William, I don't think we should do that. I don't think those men were after us. Stuart's death made me apprehensive. " Kate replied, her eyes glued to mine. The pain which was visible in her eyes earlier today had now given way to fear.

"Are you sure about this? " I asked, while she nodded.

I have a bad feeling about this, since I know what she doesn't but I could not explain it to her since that would mean exposing myself.

"Let's head home then. " Kate said, disrupting my fearful thoughts.

"Of course." I replied, kicking the vehicle into motion.

The ride was silent except for the occasional sighs heaved by Kate.

Close to our house, Kate aroused my attention to the white SUV parked in front of our house. The same SUV that sped past us some minutes ago.

What the hell!

On Kate's advice, I drove past our house, heading for the police station which was down the road.

From the opposite direction, a familiar van moved towards us with unusual speed. Out of fear, I froze instantly, unable to control the wheel. Kate, on noticing the danger we are in, and my sudden inability to control the wheel, grabbed the steering wheel with a swiftness I didn't know she was capable of, and directed the SUV into the nearby bush just in time to avoid a collision. With equal swiftness, she moved the vehicle out of the bush and drove it towards our initial direction.

"What in heaven's name is going on? " She asked, looking at me.

Dr Anderson's POV

I returned to the hospital three hours after I left. I knew Dr Sofia would be long gone by now, leaving me to kickstart my plans.

Although I had yet to finalize my revenge on Dr Sofia, I planned to find out as much as I could about her and if possible, use it against her.

I walked with an air of confidence towards Dr Sofia's office, smiling lightly at the staff who passed me on their way to carry out their duties. I needed not to fear any of the nurses suspecting me since my presence in Dr Sofia's office is not new. They have seen me many times going into the office with Dr Sofia or alone. Except it was late, and I shouldn't be here.

Once I came out of the sharp corner, close to her office, I saw Dr Sofia going in the opposite direction. It appeared that she was going home for the night but... Why did she stay back so late? I wondered.

Quickly, I went back into the sharp corner to avoid being seen.

I came out of hiding a few minutes later, once I was sure she was out of sight, then I walked straight to the door of Dr Sofia's office.

I brought out a spare key to the office, reminiscing on the day she handed it to me.

"Why would I need a spare key to your office? " I had asked her, extremely flattered.

"You might need it someday, trust me." Dr Sofia had replied, our mouths locked in a deep kiss.

Unconsciously, I wiped my mouth, to rid of the distaste I felt at the memory of the kiss I shared with Dr Sofia.

I brought out my bunch of keys. It was very easy to find the piece that bore 'sofia' from the collection.

For a few minutes, I admired the key which was paramount to my revenge and freedom, then I inserted it into the keyhole, but it could not enter. The key was way bigger than the keyhole. I tried for a few more minutes before the realization hit me. Dr Sofia deceived me.

That bitch!
