Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 4: YOU GO FIRST, I WILL FOLLOW

The narrow path cutting through the black mountain felt like the throat of a dried-up giant. The air was thick with the stinging scent of sulfur, and the sky above reflected only a dull, ashen gray.

They were heading toward an active gas zone — a place believed to be the site of a vile demon ritual.

Kaera walked ahead. Her steps were quiet and focused, one hand always resting near the hilt of her sword. Eira followed at a steady distance behind her.

Though no words were spoken, the tension that once weighed between them had begun to fade, replaced by an unspoken understanding.

"Mind if I stick with you?" Eira's voice broke the silence, low and calm.

Kaera didn't look back.

"As long as you don't cause trouble," she replied shortly.

A faint smile curved beneath Eira's hood.

"I'm not the type to trip over the same rock twice."

At that, the corner of Kaera's lips lifted ever so slightly — a smile so thin it was almost invisible. She kept her gaze forward, making sure Eira wouldn't notice.

The silence shattered with the violent crack of splitting earth. From the black stone beneath them, a massive figure emerged — a Stonebound Demon.

Its skin was as hard as granite, four muscular arms flexing as it rose, and its eyes burned like molten lava.

Without a word or prior plan, Kaera and Eira moved at the same time. Their coordination felt as though it had been honed over years.

Kaera dashed from the left, drawing the monster's attention. In one swift motion, she slashed upward, her blade cutting cleanly across the demon's right eye.

The creature roared in pain and swung one of its massive arms. Before the strike could reach Kaera, Eira activated her Nature Magic. Roots burst from the cracks in the stone, wrapping tightly around the demon's wrist as she loosed a sharp green arrow that whistled through the air.

Enraged, the demon threw its head back and opened its mouth wide. From deep within its throat, a blazing eruption of lava surged outward, rushing like a river of fire aimed straight at Eira.

"Oi!" Kaera shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos.

Without hesitation, she sliced her own finger. A drop of thick blood hovered in the air, then instantly expanded under her control, forming a solid crimson shield in front of Eira. It grew and hardened, radiating a dark red aura as if daring the flames to break it.

SSSSSHHHH!

The lava slammed into the blood shield with violent force, releasing a burst of steam that swallowed the battlefield.

Heat rippled through the air, sulfur burning in their lungs. Kaera gritted her teeth, bracing herself against the crushing pressure threatening to shatter her defense.

Eira seized the opening.

Her eyes sharpened through the haze as she raised her Verdant Shard Bow — the glowing wooden weapon firm in her grasp. Drawing back a radiant arrow infused with nature's energy, she released it with full force.

FWOOOSH!

The green streak tore through the air and struck the demon's chest, cracking through the thick stone armor and leaving a jagged opening at its core.

In the next instant, Kaera emerged from the fading smoke.

She didn't hesitate.

With a single, clean slash, her crimson-lit katana pierced straight through the exposed heart of stone.

There was no final scream — only the sound of steel splitting through the creature's core.

BOOM!

The monster ignited from within and exploded into dust and smoke, scattering like black ash around them. Debris drifted down slowly, settling over the scorched ground.

They stood there, breathing hard, the only sound left the pounding of their own hearts.

Silence returned.

A SEED OF TRUST

"We fought well back there," Eira said quietly, watching the last traces of the demon fade away.

Kaera sheathed her sword. She didn't turn to face Eira, but her voice lacked its usual cold edge.

"You didn't get in the way. That's good enough."

***

Hours later, while resting in a small cave to recover, Eira was busy sorting through her belongings.

A hand suddenly held out a waterskin to her.

It was Kaera.

She wasn't looking at Eira — her face angled elsewhere — but her hand remained steady, offering the water.

Eira accepted it with a small smile. "Thanks."

Kaera gave a slight nod before retreating into silence once more.

In the dim cave, both of them understood — though the journey ahead was long and dangerous, this was the beginning of something more than just survival partners.
