Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: THE BURNT GROVE

The wind carried rust and rot.

Eira knelt at the edge of The Burnt Grove. Black trunks. Dead earth. The soil crumbled beneath her fingers like ash.

She closed her eyes.

Echo Vein.

Her awareness sank downward ;past dead soil, past fractured stone, into the veins of the earth.

Something pulsed. Faint. Deep.

She pushed further. Traces. Recent. Something had been dragged through these roots. Repeatedly. The roots weren't dead. They were drained. Used.

Bait.

The demon had been hunting here for months. Using the roots to lure prey. Anything that touched them would send a signal. And whatever touched them never left.

Then the silence was pierced.

Too subtle to be footsteps. More like a shadow gliding across the ground. Yet heavy enough to make the fine hairs along Eira's arms rise.

Schliinnk.

The cold, metallic whisper of a blade drawn from its sheath.

Eira opened her eyes slowly.

A girl stood before her. Dark hair tied into a neat bun, partially concealed beneath a black cloak that drank the surrounding light. A red kimono fluttered faintly against the gray, lifeless forest, an almost violent contrast. Her deep blue eyes pierced through Eira, and beyond her.

The air began to hum. A killing aura, sharp with the scent of blood, spread outward like an invisible tide.

"Don't touch those roots." Kaera's voice was cold. Empty of inflection. "They're bait."

Eira rose to her feet without visible alarm. Composed. As though this encounter had always been inevitable. "I know." She replied evenly. "And I'm not here to cause any trouble."

Kaera stepped forward. Each movement carried restrained intent, like a blade hovering just short of flesh. "If you say so.." The words slid out flatly. The air around Kaera seemed to freeze.

Eira's instincts flared. The Echo Vein, still active beneath her awareness, trembled violently, sending urgent danger signals racing through her nerves. Without conscious thought, her hand grasped an arrow that materialized from thin air. Verdant Shard. Glowing faint green in the gloom.

The tension between them spiked. Two predators. Waiting for the first mistake.

Eira didn't know who Kaera was hunting. But in that moment, she felt as though she stood directly at the edge of her blade. Before either could strike, the ground detonated behind Kaera.

BOOM.

A winged demon burst from shattered ruins. Tattered appendages dragging through the dust. Blood-hungry eyes, wide and feral. Saliva dripped as it lunged for the nearest prey.

Eira instinctively raised her bow. But her vision faltered. Kaera was gone.

In a blink, like a shadow peeling away from reality, she was already airborne, directly above the demon. Her katana descended in a single flawless arc.

SLAASHH.

Steel parted air. And flesh. The creature's scream died instantly. Its body collapsed in two clean halves.

Silence returned.

Eira stood frozen, witnessing a strike too swift for ordinary sight to follow.

The girl landed lightly. Blood dripped from her blade. No strain. No exhilaration. Just control. She flicked the blood off and sheathed her katana. Click.

Eira studied her, lowering her bow. "You knew about the demon. Who are you?"

Kaera didn't answer right away. Those deep blue eyes lifted to meet Eira's once more. Quiet but no longer empty.

"Stay out of my way. I'll stay out of yours." She walked a few steps. Stopped.

"And don't bother following me." Not a threat. A warning. She walked into the mist. The red of that kimono faded into gray.

' She's not an enemy. But she won't become an ally that easily. '

Eira stood alone among the dead trees. The demon's body was already dissolving into black dust, scattering with the wind. The roots beneath it had gone still, no pulse, no vibration. The grove was finally quiet. Truly dead.

Her investigation here was done. The demon was gone. The roots were no longer a threat. Yet the Echo Vein was still humming. Not in warning, but in sheer confusion.

The trace left behind wasn't from a demon,it was from Kaera. The girl's energy felt dangerously deep. Older. Unnatural.

And that girl was heading deeper into the unknown.

Eira took a step forward. Then another.

She had never been good at walking away.
