JiAh's eyes widen as she takes in the unfamiliar surroundings, the lush greenery and towering trees a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Seoul. She blinks, trying to process the sudden change in scenery.
"What the...? How did I get here? This looks like something straight out of a fantasy novel!"
She spins around, taking in the mystical forest before her. The air is thick with an otherworldly energy, and she can hear strange sounds coming from the depths of the woods.
"Okay, stay calm, JiAh," she mutters to herself. "This has to be some kind of dream. Or maybe I'm being punked?"
Suddenly, a rustling in the bushes catches her attention. She freezes, heart pounding in her chest as a massive creature emerges from the foliage.
The creature stands at least eight feet tall, its muscular form covered in shimmering scales that catch the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy. Its face is a grotesque fusion of human and reptile features—sharp teeth, glowing eyes, and a forked tongue that flicks out to taste the air.
"Well hello there," JiAh says with a nervous laugh. "You're certainly... impressive. But I think there's been some kind of mistake. I'm not supposed to be here."
The beast tilts its head curiously, studying JiAh with an unnerving intensity. It lets out a guttural growl that vibrates through the ground beneath her feet.
JiAh swallows hard, trying to maintain her composure despite the fear gripping her heart.
JiAh's mind races as she tries to remember any beastmen from her novels that might resemble this creature. Nothing comes to mind—this thing is unlike anything she's ever read about.
"Look, I know I'm trespassing or whatever," she says, raising her hands in a placating gesture. "But I swear I didn't mean to intrude on your... territory. Can we just pretend this never happened and I'll be on my way?"
The beast takes a step closer, its claws clicking against the forest floor. The air grows heavy with its presence, and JiAh can feel the heat radiating off its scales.
"Please?" she adds softly, her voice trembling slightly. "I'm just a college student from Seoul. I don't belong here."
The beast's glowing eyes narrow as it studies JiAh's trembling form. It lets out another low growl, the sound rumbling in its chest like distant thunder. Slowly, deliberately, it reaches out a massive hand towards her.
"Wait!" JiAh gasps, stumbling back instinctively. "Don't touch me! I'm not some kind of offering or sacrifice!"
The creature pauses at her outburst, tilting its head with clear amusement in its reptilian features. Its forked tongue darts out again to taste the air around her.
"You're... different," it rasps in surprisingly articulate Common Tongue. "Most humans scream and beg for mercy when they encounter us beasts."
JiAh's eyes widen in shock at the beast's sudden ability to speak. She stares at it, trying to process this new development.
"Yyou can talk?" she stammers, her fear momentarily forgotten in the face of this revelation. "I mean... I guess that makes sense, since you're clearly not just some mindless monster."
The creature's lips curl into what might be a smile, revealing rows of sharp teeth. "I am Vex'aria, a dragonkin of the Emerald Forest. And you, little human, are either very brave or very foolish to stand your ground before me."
It leans in closer, its hot breath washing over JiAh's face as it inhales deeply. "You bear no scent of fear... only curiosity and defiance. It is... intriguing."
JiAh stands her ground, meeting Vex'aria's gaze with a defiant tilt of her chin. Her heart races, but she refuses to let the dragonkin see her fear.
"I'm JiAh," she says, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. "And I'm not foolish. I just... I don't believe in giving up without a fight."
She pauses, considering her next words carefully. "Look, Vex'aria... I don't know how I ended up here, but I have a feeling this isn't just some random coincidence. Maybe we're meant to help each other somehow?"
The dragonkin's eyes widen slightly at JiAh's bold suggestion. It regards her with renewed interest, its tail swishing thoughtfully behind it.
Vex'aria lets out a low chuckle, the sound rumbling like stones tumbling down a hill. It circles JiAh slowly, its massive form moving with surprising grace for its size.
"Help each other?" it repeats, amusement coloring its voice. "Little human, you are in the Beast World now. Survival is every creature for itself here."
Despite its words, Vex'aria's tone carries less menace than before. It stops behind JiAh and leans down close to her ear. "But I must admit... your spirit intrigues me. Most humans would be begging for their lives by now."
The dragonkin's hot breath tickles JiAh's neck as it speaks. "Tell me, JiAh... what makes you think you can survive in a world where even the strongest beasts fall prey to others?"
Vex'aria's claws brush against JiAh's shoulder lightly, testing her reaction. Its forked tongue flicks out again, tasting the air around her head.
"You smell of ink and paper... like one of those storytellers who sit by village fires spinning tales of heroes and monsters." The dragonkin's voice takes on a mocking tone. "Do you truly believe your stories can save you here?"
Its eyes gleam with curiosity and something else—perhaps hunger or desire. "Or do you possess some hidden power that makes you so confident?"
JiAh's heart pounds in her chest as Vex'aria's claws brush against her shoulder. She tries to ignore the shiver that runs down her spine at the dragonkin's proximity and focus on its words.
"I don't know if my stories can save me," she admits, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I do know that giving up isn't an option. I've always believed that even the smallest person can change the course of the future."
She turns her head slightly to look up at Vex'aria, their faces now inches apart. "As for hidden powers... I'm not sure. But I do have a system now, something that appeared when I arrived here. It gives me objectives and rewards."
The dragonkin's eyes widen at this revelation. "A system? Like those found only by the chosen ones in legends?" It leans back slightly, studying JiAh with newfound interest. "Show me."
