The alley was still when the creature finally stopped moving.
For several long seconds Adrian didn't move at all. His body remained tense, the rifle still held tightly in his hands as if he expected the monster to suddenly leap back to life. The cold night air drifted through the narrow alley, carrying the faint smell of dust and broken concrete. Somewhere far away, another creature roared, the sound echoing through the ruined city like distant thunder.
But Adrian barely heard it.
His eyes were locked on Lina.
She stood only a few steps away, her breathing uneven, her shoulders rising and falling quickly as she tried to steady herself. The faint frost that had burst from her body only moments earlier was slowly fading, melting into thin drops of water that slid down the cracked pavement. The creature she had struck lay against the brick wall, its body frozen and shattered where the impact had landed.
Lina looked down at her hands.
They were trembling.
"I… I didn't mean to do that," she said quietly.
Her voice sounded small in the silence of the alley.
Adrian lowered the rifle slowly, though the tension in his muscles remained. He glanced at the frozen creature, then back at Lina, still trying to understand what he had just witnessed. Only minutes ago she had been a terrified stranger hiding inside a convenience store. Now she had just thrown a monster into a wall with a blast of freezing energy.
He exhaled slowly.
"Honestly," he admitted, "I don't think that thing cares whether you meant to or not."
Lina let out a shaky breath that almost sounded like a laugh, though the fear was still clear in her eyes.
Stormfang padded forward from beside Adrian, his paws making soft sounds against the pavement. The young wolf circled the frozen creature carefully, sniffing the air before giving it a cautious nudge with his nose. The body didn't move. Apparently satisfied, Stormfang huffed softly and turned his attention toward Lina.
His blue eyes studied her curiously.
Lina hesitated for a moment, unsure how to react under the wolf's watchful gaze. Slowly, she knelt down and held out her hand. Stormfang sniffed her fingers, his ears twitching slightly. After a moment he seemed to accept her presence again and allowed her to scratch the thick fur along the side of his neck.
Adrian watched the interaction with a faint smile.
"Looks like he approves," he said.
Stormfang glanced back at him immediately, giving a short bark that sounded suspiciously proud.
Lina shook her head softly. "He's surprisingly calm for a wolf that shoots lightning."
Stormfang barked again, louder this time, as if he considered that a compliment.
Adrian crouched beside the frozen monster and studied it carefully. Frost still clung to its thick gray skin, small cracks spreading across the surface where Lina's power had struck. Up close, the creature was even uglier than it had appeared during the fight. Its limbs were long and crooked, its claws sharp enough to tear through metal.
Adrian rubbed the back of his neck slowly.
"This world just keeps getting weirder," he muttered.
Lina stood and wrapped her arms around herself slightly. The cold that had burst out of her earlier had left a faint chill in the air around her body.
"How did that even happen?" she asked.
Adrian glanced back at her.
"I was hoping you could tell me."
She shook her head slowly. "When that thing jumped at us… I thought we were dead. Then suddenly my chest felt like it was freezing from the inside. It didn't hurt. It just… exploded out."
She held up her hands again, staring at them like they belonged to someone else.
"I didn't even know people could do something like that."
Adrian didn't have an answer for her. He barely understood what had happened to himself earlier that day when Stormfang had first appeared. Nothing about the world made sense anymore.
Stormfang nudged Adrian's arm with his nose.
Adrian looked down at the wolf. "Yeah, I know," he sighed. "Standing around here probably isn't the smartest idea."
He stood up and slung the rifle back across his shoulder.
The weapon felt heavy and unfamiliar.
Earlier that day, during the first chaos when the rifts had opened, Adrian had hidden behind an overturned police car while creatures tore through the street nearby. The officer who had been driving it had already been dead when Adrian found him. The monsters had gotten there first.
Adrian had taken the rifle with shaking hands, not because he wanted to, but because he knew he would never survive without something to defend himself.
Now that same rifle was the only thing keeping him alive.
He pushed the memory aside and looked toward the far end of the alley.
"We should keep moving," he said. "My neighborhood isn't too far from here."
Lina nodded, though the nervous tension in her shoulders hadn't disappeared.
The three of them climbed out of the alley and stepped back onto the empty street. The city looked even darker now than it had earlier in the night. Broken cars littered the road, and several nearby buildings still burned slowly, sending faint trails of smoke into the sky.
For a while they walked in silence.
Stormfang moved ahead of them, his nose low to the ground as he scanned the street for danger. Every few seconds his ears twitched, reacting to distant sounds that Adrian and Lina couldn't hear yet.
Eventually Lina spoke again.
"Your family," she said quietly. "They're still in the city right ?"
Adrian nodded.
"I really hope so "
He rubbed his forehead tiredly.
"When the rifts opened, everyone was scattered. I have no idea where they ended up."
Lina walked beside him for a moment before answering.
"My parents work in another city," she said. "I hope they are safe."
She glanced down at the ruined street.
"I never thought something like this would happen."
Stormfang suddenly stopped walking.
His entire body stiffened.
Adrian noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
The wolf gave a low warning growl.
Something moved between two abandoned vehicles ahead.
Then another shape appeared.
Three creatures slowly crawled out from the shadows.
They were smaller than the monster Lina had frozen earlier, but they looked much faster. Their thin bodies moved in strange jerking motions, their long claws scraping across the pavement as they crept closer.
Adrian tightened his grip on the rifle.
"Guess we're not done fighting tonight," he muttered.
Stormfang stepped forward, lightning beginning to flicker faintly along his fur.
Lina swallowed nervously but forced herself to stay beside Adrian.
"I'll try to help," she said.
The creatures suddenly screeched and rushed forward.
Stormfang exploded into motion.
A bolt of electricity flashed through the air as the wolf lunged, slamming into the nearest monster with incredible speed. The impact knocked the creature sideways, sending it crashing into a nearby car.
Adrian fired the rifle once.
The loud crack echoed through the street as the bullet struck the second creature in the shoulder, slowing its charge.
The third monster darted straight toward Lina.
Her heart jumped into her throat.
For a brief moment she froze.
Then the same cold sensation from earlier surged through her chest again.
This time she didn't panic.
She thrust her hand forward instinctively.
A burst of frost spread across the pavement in front of her.
The charging creature lost its footing instantly, its claws scraping uselessly against the ice as it slipped forward. Stormfang was already there, lightning flashing again as he struck the creature before it could recover.
Within seconds the street fell silent again.
Adrian lowered the rifle slowly.
Stormfang trotted back toward them, his tail wagging slightly.
Lina stared down at the thin layer of frost covering the ground.
"I think… I'm starting to understand it," she said softly.
Adrian nodded.
"Good," he replied.
Stormfang barked once proudly.
Adrian scratched behind the wolf's ears.
"Yeah," he said quietly, looking toward the distant skyline of the city. "Looks like we're all going to need new tricks to survive this world."
