Chapter 8 - Chapter 7 — The Girl Behind the Scope

The neon lights of the city bled through Kai's apartment window, painting long lines across the floor. Outside, the late-night traffic hummed like a restless ocean, but inside the room there was only silence.

Kai sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the sleek black VR capsule resting beside the desk.

The logo of Eternum Online glowed faintly on its surface.

He had already logged out nearly an hour ago, yet his mind was still inside the game.

The dungeon.

The hidden class quest.

The whispers in the dark corridor.

And the message.

"Some returns were never meant to happen."

Kai clenched his fist slowly.

That message hadn't existed in the previous timeline.

Which meant only one thing.

Something had already begun changing.

He exhaled slowly and leaned back against the wall.

"Good," he muttered.

"If the future wants to change… I'll change it first."

The Stream

Kai opened his laptop and typed quickly.

The familiar interface of the streaming platform appeared. Thousands of channels were live—players exploring the newly released game, shouting in excitement, dying repeatedly in beginner dungeons.

But Kai ignored all of them.

He typed one name.

SilverLune.

A stream instantly appeared.

Her channel.

In the previous timeline, this stream had been the first time he ever saw her.

The memory surfaced vividly in his mind.

A girl with silver hair tied in a loose ponytail. Calm voice. Sharp aim. And a smile that appeared whenever she defeated someone stronger than herself.

At the time, she had been a small streamer.

Almost unknown.

But later she would become one of the most famous content creators for Eternum Online.

Kai clicked the stream.

The screen flickered to life.

A battlefield appeared.

Low-level forest zone.

Dozens of players were fighting wolves.

And there she was.

Silver armor.

A long sniper-type rifle resting on her shoulder.

SilverLune.

Kai leaned closer to the screen unconsciously.

She looked exactly the same.

Maybe a little younger.

But her movements were unmistakable.

Precise.

Calm.

Deadly.

A wolf leapt toward her.

She didn't move.

Bang.

The shot echoed.

The wolf dropped instantly.

Her chat exploded.

"HOLY AIM"

"THAT HEADSHOT???"

"She didn't even aim!"

SilverLune laughed softly.

"Relax, relax. It was just luck."

Kai couldn't help smiling slightly.

You were never lucky, he thought.

You were always this good.

In the previous timeline, her skill had shocked the professional scene.

By the time of the Eternum Global Championship, she had already become a feared marksman in PvP tournaments.

But back then…

Kai had never spoken to her.

Not until it was too late.

He watched the stream silently.

SilverLune looted the wolf and continued walking through the forest.

"Alright chat," she said cheerfully. "Let's try the mini-boss in this area."

The chat exploded again.

"YOU'LL DIE"

"DON'T GO ALONE"

"BOSS IS HARD"

She tilted her head slightly.

"Hmm… really?"

Kai frowned.

That boss wasn't just hard.

It was a trap.

In the first week of the game, many players had died there because they didn't understand the mechanics.

And if SilverLune died…

Her early progress would slow down.

Which would change the future.

Kai stood up slowly.

"Guess I'll log back in."

Back in the Game

The familiar system light surrounded him.

[Welcome back, Player: Kai Ren]

The world of Eternum Online appeared again.

The starting city bustled with players.

But Kai ignored them.

He opened the map quickly.

Forest Zone.

Mini-boss location.

Exactly where SilverLune's stream had shown.

Kai started running.

The Trap

The forest was darker now.

The trees swayed slowly in the night wind.

SilverLune walked cautiously between the roots.

"Alright chat," she whispered dramatically. "If I die, please clip it so I can cry later."

Her viewers spammed laughing emojis.

She stepped into a clearing.

And the ground suddenly shook.

A massive shadow rose from the earth.

Level 15 boss.

Forest Devourer.

SilverLune blinked.

"Oh."

"That's… bigger than I expected."

The creature roared.

And charged.

She fired instantly.

Bang!

The bullet struck its eye.

But the monster barely slowed.

Her chat exploded with panic.

"RUN RUN RUN"

"YOU CAN'T SOLO THAT"

"LEVEL DIFFERENCE"

SilverLune clicked her tongue.

"Okay… maybe we run."

She turned—

And the monster's tail smashed into the ground.

Blocking her escape.

"Ah."

"Well."

"This might hurt."

The monster raised its claws.

Then suddenly—

Slash.

A streak of black light cut across the battlefield.

The monster staggered.

SilverLune froze.

A figure landed between her and the boss.

Black armor.

Dark sword.

Level 9.

Kai Ren.

Her chat exploded again.

"WHO IS THAT???"

"RANDOM HERO???"

"ANIME ENTRANCE"

SilverLune blinked in surprise.

"Uh… hi?"

Kai didn't turn around.

"Stay behind me," he said calmly.

The boss roared and charged again.

Kai stepped forward.

His movements were smooth.

Precise.

Like someone who had fought this monster hundreds of times.

Because he had.

The monster swung its claws.

Kai dodged sideways.

Then struck.

Slash.

A glowing weak point appeared.

SilverLune's eyes widened.

"Weak spot…?"

Kai shouted without looking back.

"Shoot its throat when it roars."

She reacted instantly.

The monster opened its mouth.

Bang.

Perfect shot.

Critical hit.

The creature staggered violently.

Kai dashed forward.

His sword pierced the glowing core beneath its jaw.

The monster let out a final roar.

Then collapsed.

Silence filled the forest.

System messages appeared.

[Boss Defeated]

SilverLune stared.

Her chat exploded like fireworks.

"WHAT JUST HAPPENED???"

"THIS GUY IS CRAZY"

"PRO PLAYER???"

Kai sheathed his sword calmly.

Then finally turned toward her.

Up close, she looked slightly stunned.

Her silver eyes studied him carefully.

"Uh…"

"Thanks," she said awkwardly.

Kai nodded.

"No problem."

Her chat immediately started teasing.

"ASK HIS NAME"

"PARTY WITH HIM"

"MARRIAGE SPEEDRUN"

SilverLune coughed slightly.

"So… what's your name?"

Kai hesitated for a moment.

In the previous timeline, she had learned his name only when he became famous.

But this time…

He said it calmly.

"Kai."

She smiled slightly.

"I'm SilverLune."

"I know."

She blinked.

"You… know?"

Kai quickly looked away.

"Your stream."

"Oh!"

Her face brightened.

"You're a viewer?"

Kai shrugged.

"Sometimes."

Her chat immediately exploded again.

"HE WATCHES THE STREAM"

"SHIP CONFIRMED"

"CLIP THIS"

SilverLune laughed nervously.

"Well… thanks for saving me."

Kai looked at the defeated boss.

"You would've survived."

She shook her head.

"Not alone."

There was a short silence.

Then she smiled slightly.

"Want to party?"

Kai paused.

In the previous timeline…

This moment had never happened.

He had watched her from afar.

Admired her skill.

But they had never fought side by side.

Until much later.

Until…

He died.

Kai looked at her again.

SilverLune tilted her head curiously.

"Well?"

Kai finally smiled faintly.

"Sure."

A party invitation appeared.

[Player SilverLune invites you to a party]

Kai accepted.

And somewhere far away…

In a dark office filled with monitors…

A man watched the screen carefully.

One of the monitors showed Kai Ren's character profile.

Another displayed combat data from the forest battle.

The man leaned back slowly.

"Hm."

"This player…"

He tapped the desk thoughtfully.

"Interesting."

The name on the monitor flickered.

Kai Ren.

The man smiled faintly.

"We'll keep an eye on you."

Back in the forest, SilverLune stretched her arms happily.

"Alright chat!"

"New party member acquired."

Her viewers spammed messages.

"PROTECT HIM"

"LEVEL HIM UP"

"DATE HIM"

SilverLune rolled her eyes.

"Relax."

Then she looked at Kai.

"So, Kai…"

"Ready to hunt?"

Kai glanced at the moonlit forest.

In the previous timeline, tonight had been ordinary.

But now…

Everything was different.

He nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

"Let's hunt."

And somewhere in the depths of the game's system…

A hidden log updated silently.

[Timeline Deviation Detected]

The game had begun to change.

And Kai Ren…

Was the center of it.
