Chapter 14 - The Stakes

The Crimson Cloud envoy did not arrive quietly.

Three warships hovered beyond Azure Wind's outer ridge, banners snapping in cold wind. Their formation did not press forward aggressively, but their presence was unmistakable.

Lan Qingyun stood on the terrace, hands behind his back. Below him, one hundred disciples watched in tense silence.

The envoy descended alone, second Elder of Crimson Cloud — Han Xianfeng.

Lan Qingyun did not release his true aura. Mid Golden Core pressure flowed steadily around him.

The two elders faced each other at the boundary platform.

Han Licheng inclined his head slightly, " Greetings Sect Master Lan."

"Second Elder Han may I know your reason of a sudden visit."

Han Licheng produced a jade scroll, "Crimson Cloud has discovered a demonic instability at the western boundary. The threat extends beyond sect borders."

Lan Qingyun did not blink, "We are aware of fluctuation."

Han's eyes flickered faintly "Then you understand the danger."

"Explain."

The second Elder's voice remained even. "An ancient suppression realm has degraded. We attempted internal containment. Losses were sustained."

"How many did you lose?" Qingyan questioned

"Three Peak Foundation Establishment."

Lan Qingyun allowed the smallest pause "That's Significant."

"Yes." Han extended the jade scroll, "A regional assembly has been called. All major sects are invited to participate in joint stabilization."

Lan Qingyun accepted the scroll without looking down, "And if one declines?"

Han's gaze sharpened, "Then one declines responsibility."

The wind shifted across the terrace, a subtle trap. Lan Qingyun met his eyes calmly. "When?"

"In Three day's time at western Rupture Valley."

Silence stretched thin between them. Then Lan Qingyun inclined his head, "Azure Wind will respond shortly."

Han Licheng studied him for one breath too long, then nodded. "We await your answer."

He ascended without further words. The warships withdrew slowly, but not fully. They lingered in distant airspace. Watching.

That evening, Elder Wei sat in the ancestral hall. Lan Qingyun stood before him, the jade scroll open. The old master read quietly, then sighed.

"They definitely can't close it alone but if we don't go we lose whatever standing our sect has left and if you go, we risk losing you." Elder Wei continued "You believe this is coincidence?"

"No master you know they are suspecting my advancement" Replied Qingyan while folding the scroll

Elder Wei's eyes sharpened slightly. "They will test you. "The old master leaned back slowly. "Will you reveal yourself?"

Lan Qingyun did not answer. The silence held.

Elder Wei coughed softly. "You understand what anchoring means you may lose everything"

The old master studied him carefully. "You have already risked too much."

Lan Qingyun's expression did not shift. "If the seal ruptures fully, this region weakens."

Elder Wei gave a faint, knowing smile. "You are thinking beyond ranking."

A long pause passed between them then Finally "Go," Elder Wei said quietly.

Lan Qingyun bowed once. "I will."

Later that night, alone in meditation, Lan Qingyun extended his spiritual sense toward the western horizon. The demonic fluctuation was faint from this distance, but real. Unstable. Hungry.

And then Golden text unfolded in his mind.

System Alert: Regional Demonic Instability Detected. New Major Task Issued.

Lan Qingyun's eyes opened slowly. He did not speak.

The text clarified:

Major Task: Control the Demonic Realm Unrest. Objective: Prevent seal rupture and stabilize core flow. Difficulty: High.

Reward: – Sect-wide Cultivation Speed ×10– Duration: 6 Months

The words lingered in golden light. Lan Qingyun's breathing did not change. But his eyes sharpened.

"Clarify," he said inwardly. The System Responded:

Condition Stabilization must be achieved without catastrophic collapse. External interference permitted Personal risk — High.

He considered the reward carefully, Ten times cultivation speed for six months for every disciple.

One hundred disciples. Three Foundation Establishment. New recruits. Former slaves. The Xuan Spirit Root boy.

Six months at tenfold speed could push outer disciples toward Foundation, consolidate breakthroughs, elevate sect average strength dramatically, close the gap with Crimson Cloud's lower ranks, alter regional ranking permanently.

It was not a personal reward, it was structural acceleration.

He exhaled slowly and closed his eyes, a year ago, he would have hesitated.

Bu now If he succeeds, Azure Wind leaps years forward. If he fails, he weakens permanently. But if no one stabilizes it, this region becomes like the destroyed backwater realm.

This was no small event after all Golden text dissolved quietly.

The next morning, he gathered the inner circle. Three Foundation Establishment disciples. Senior instructors.

He only said: "This expedition determines our future trajectory."

He looked at each of them carefully. "Inside that realm, strength alone will not win."

He turned toward the western horizon. "And I will not allow this region to become the next ruin."

The wind moved softly across the terrace.

In the distance barely visible the sky above Western Rupture Valley flickered faintly.

And somewhere inside that unstable realm Something stirred.
