Chapter 60 - Moving Forward

Life, as it must, continued.

The community center thrived. The council governed. The world kept turning.

But something had shifted.

The Ibwa's attack, and Anino's sacrifice, had changed everyone.

"We're closer now," Luningning observed at a council meeting. "The community bonded through crisis. Creatures who barely spoke before are now friends."

"Trauma does that," Lakay Ambo said. "But so does love. Anino's love, Glad's love, all of it—it wove us together."

Glad smiled. "He'd be annoyed we're being sentimental."

"He'd also be purring," Congressman Diomedes added. "Cats are sentimental. They just pretend not to be."

The meeting continued—budgets, blood supplies, a dispute between duwende and kapres about tree rights. Normal problems. Manageable problems.

Afterward, Glad found Ariel at the garden, as she often did.

"Thinking about him?"

"Always." She sat beside him. "But also thinking about the future. What's next for us?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean—" She hesitated. "We've been together a while now. Fought ancient evils. Built communities. Survived chaos." She took his hand. "What's next for US? Not for Glad the celebrity or Ariel the aswang. For us."

Ariel considered this. "I've been thinking about that too."

"And?"

"Well—" He pulled something from his pocket. A small box. "I was going to wait for a better moment. But maybe there's no better moment than now."

He opened the box.

Inside, a ring—simple, elegant, with a small bloodstone at its center.

"Gladys Samotiloy, will you marry me?"

Glad stared.

173 years alive. Countless battles. Ancient enemies. Viral fame.

Nothing had prepared her for this.

"Yes," she whispered. "YES."

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

They kissed as the garden erupted—creatures emerging from hiding, having watched the whole thing, cheering and crying and celebrating.

"YOU PLANNED THIS?!" Glad laughed.

"Of course! Did you think we were just sitting here?"

She looked at the crowd—her family, her community, her people.

And at the statue of Anino, watching over them all.

"Dad," she whispered, "I think I finally found my place."

A warm breeze purred.
