Chapter 1 - the sky beyond the mountains

In the far north of a magical land called Aetheria, where silver clouds kissed the snowy mountains and rivers glowed under moonlight, there was a small kingdom hidden between giant forests and icy peaks. The kingdom was called Valeris.

The people of Valeris believed in many legends.

They believed the mountains were alive.

They believed the winds carried secrets.

And most of all, they believed that somewhere beyond the sky existed the Gate of Destiny—a place where only the strongest souls could reach.

But those were just stories… or so most people thought.

Except for Anika.

Anika was not like the other girls in Valeris. While they spent their mornings weaving flowers into their hair or helping in the market, Anika woke before sunrise every day.

She ran across the rocky paths near the mountains.

She practiced with wooden swords in the quiet forest.

She trained until her hands trembled and her legs burned.

Her dream was strange for someone from a peaceful kingdom.

She wanted to become a Sky Guardian.

The Sky Guardians were warriors chosen by the ancient council. They protected Aetheria from dark forces that sometimes appeared beyond the mountains. Their armor shined like stars, and their wings—made of enchanted metal and magic—allowed them to fly across the skies.

But there had never been a Sky Guardian from Valeris for almost a hundred years.

And there had never been a girl chosen.

That didn't stop Anika.

That morning the sky was pale blue and the wind was cold. The mountains looked enormous against the rising sun.

Anika stood on the edge of a cliff outside the kingdom.

She tied her dark hair into a tight ponytail and looked toward the sky where a glowing bird-like creature flew across the clouds.

A Sky Phoenix.

Seeing one was rare.

Her eyes sparkled.

"One day… I'll fly higher than that," she whispered.

She opened a small leather diary she always carried with her. On the first page she had written something in bold ink:

Mission: Reach the Gate of Destiny. Become a Sky Guardian.

Most people would laugh if they saw it.

But to Anika, it was more than a dream. It was a promise.

She closed the diary and started running down the mountain path like she always did.

The forest around her was quiet except for the sound of leaves and her footsteps on the dirt road.

Suddenly—

She heard something.

Another footstep.

Behind her.

Anika slowed down.

The sound stopped.

She turned her head slightly but saw nothing except tall ancient trees and shadows between them.

"Probably an animal," she murmured.

Still, something felt strange.

The air suddenly felt colder.

She continued running.

After a few minutes she reached a small clearing where sunlight touched the ground. She stopped to drink water from a silver flask.

Then she heard the sound again.

Footsteps.

Closer this time.

Her heart began beating faster.

"Who's there?" she called.

No answer.

The forest stayed silent.

Even the birds had stopped singing.

Anika stepped slowly toward the trees, gripping the wooden sword tied to her belt.

"Come out," she said firmly.

For a moment nothing happened.

Then—

A branch snapped somewhere behind her.

She spun around quickly.

But the path was empty.

No one.

No animal.

Nothing.

"Strange…" she whispered.

After waiting for a moment, she sighed and turned to leave.

But as she ran again, something slipped from her pocket without her noticing.

Her diary.

It landed quietly on the forest floor.

Anika disappeared down the path toward the kingdom.

The forest became silent again.

For a long moment, nothing moved.

Then slowly…

Someone stepped out from behind a giant tree.

A boy.

He looked around sixteen or seventeen, wearing a dark cloak that blended perfectly with the shadows. His eyes were sharp and observant, and there was something mysterious about the way he moved—silent, almost like a hunter.

He walked toward the diary lying on the ground.

"Interesting," he muttered.

He picked it up and brushed the dust off its cover.

The name ANIKA was carved into the leather.

The boy flipped open the first page.

His eyes paused on the bold sentence written there.

Mission: Reach the Gate of Destiny. Become a Sky Guardian.

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Ambitious," he said quietly.

He turned a few more pages.

Inside were sketches of flying armor, training notes, and plans for traveling beyond the mountains.

This was not the diary of an ordinary girl.

The boy looked toward the path where Anika had disappeared.

"You're chasing a dangerous dream," he whispered.

The wind suddenly began blowing through the forest.

Leaves rustled violently.

The boy looked up toward the mountains.

Far above the peaks, dark clouds had begun forming—unnaturally fast.

A faint purple lightning flashed inside them.

His expression changed.

"So… it has started already," he said under his breath.

He closed the diary.

"Looks like fate chose you too, Anika."

Suddenly the ground trembled slightly.

From somewhere deep within the mountains, a low, distant roar echoed through the valley.

Not thunder.

Something else.

Something alive.

The boy's eyes narrowed.

"Earlier than expected…"

He placed the diary inside his cloak.

"I guess I should return this to its owner."

He began walking down the path toward Valeris.

Meanwhile, inside the kingdom walls, Anika was walking through the busy marketplace. Merchants shouted, children ran around, and the smell of fresh bread filled the air.

But suddenly she stopped.

Her hand reached into her pocket.

Her face froze.

"My diary…"

It was gone.

Her heart dropped.

That diary held everything—her plans, her dreams, even the map she had secretly drawn to reach the mountains.

She quickly turned back toward the forest.

"I must have dropped it during training," she said nervously.

Without wasting another second, Anika started running back toward the mountain path.

But as she ran, she noticed something strange.

The sky above Valeris had started turning darker.

Storm clouds gathered over the mountains.

And far away—

Something huge moved between the peaks.

Anika slowed down, staring at the horizon.

"What… is that?"

For a moment it looked like the shadow of a giant wing.

Then it disappeared behind the clouds.

A cold chill ran down her spine.

At the same moment, deep in the forest path ahead, the mysterious boy stopped walking.

He looked toward the sky.

"Too late," he whispered.

Lightning flashed across the mountains.

The storm had begun.

And neither Anika nor the kingdom of Valeris knew that this storm was not natural.

It was the first sign of an ancient power waking up

And somehow .....

Anika was also a part of it ...

To be continued.
