Chapter 5 - chapter 5:The first test

Leyla woke the next morning with a sense of unease pressing down on her chest. The photograph Ethan had given her yesterday still burned in her mind, as if it had imprinted itself on her memory. Every detail, the rain, the fear, the shadowy figure echoed in her mind like a warning.

She tried to focus on her routine: breakfast, checking emails, tidying her small apartment. But every sound outside, the distant roar of traffic, a dog barking, the soft thud of someone's footsteps on the sidewalk, made her pulse spike. Her phone lay on the counter, silent for now, but she knew it wouldn't stay that way.

By midday, Leyla decided she had to leave her apartment. Staying inside was suffocating, and she had work at the gallery. She grabbed her bag, slinging it over her shoulder, and stepped outside into the city. Rain had returned in a light drizzle, coating the streets with a silver sheen.

Something about the weather reminded her of that night. The shiver crawling up her spine wasn't just from the chill,it was something deeper, primal.

Halfway to the gallery, she noticed a figure following her. Her pulse quickened. She paused, pretending to adjust her bag, and glanced back.

Ethan.

He walked a few steps behind, casual but impossible to ignore. The subtle awareness that he was watching her made her chest tighten.

I can't trust him… but why does it feel like he's the only one who can protect me?

Before she could think further, a van screeched to a halt beside her. Two men jumped out, masks concealing their faces. Her stomach dropped.

"Leyla Hart," one of them said, voice low and menacing.

Fear paralyzed her. She tried to run, but they were faster. One grabbed her arm, yanking her toward the van.

A familiar shadow darted from the alley nearby. Ethan.

He moved with terrifying precision, striking the first man across the jaw with a force that made Leyla flinch. The second man lunged at him, but Ethan was already gone, appearing behind him in a fluid motion.

Leyla's heart pounded so hard she thought it might burst. "Ethan!" she screamed.

"Stay behind me," he commanded, his eyes sharp and unyielding. "Don't move."

In moments, the men were subdued, one groaning in pain and the other fleeing into the rain-soaked streets. Ethan's gaze flicked to Leyla, scanning her from head to toe as if assessing whether she was unharmed.

"Are you okay?" he asked, voice low but firm.

She nodded, trembling. "I… I think so. But… why? Who were they?"

He looked away, toward the shadows where the van had vanished. "Someone from that night. Someone who wants to make sure the past doesn't stay buried. You need to understand, Leyla… danger doesn't announce itself. It waits. And sometimes it's closer than you think."

Leyla's hands shook. The truth of his words pressed down on her like a physical weight. She wanted to scream, to run, to push him away, but her feet wouldn't move. She couldn't escape him or what he represented.

Ethan took her hand gently, grounding her. "I know you're scared. I am too. But you're stronger than you think. And tonight… we're going to face the first test. Together."

Leyla swallowed hard, trying to steady her breathing. "First test?" she whispered, though she already had a sinking feeling she knew what he meant.

He nodded once. "Yes. There will be more after this. The night we survived… it's not over. Not by a long shot. And the people who were involved then, they've been waiting."

Her stomach churned. The world she had known, ordinary, safe, predictable, was gone. In its place was a city full of shadows, secrets, and unseen threats. And Ethan… Ethan was the only constant she could cling to.

"Where do we go from here?" she asked softly.

He looked at her with intensity, the same dangerous calm that had haunted her dreams. "We survive. We learn. And we make sure that no one from that night comes for you again."

The sound of footsteps echoed from the alley behind them. Leyla spun around but it was empty. The chill ran through her like ice water. She realized then that the city wasn't just dangerous,it was alive, watching, waiting.

Ethan's hand tightened over hers. "Stay close," he said, almost a growl. "They're closer than you think. And if we're not careful… you won't see tomorrow."

Leyla's chest tightened. Fear, anticipation, and something darker, something intoxicating, clutched at her heart. She nodded, unable to look away from the intensity of his eyes.

And in that moment, as the rain fell harder and the city seemed to close in around them, she knew that the night was far from over.

The first test had begun.

And somewhere, in the shadows, someone was watching, waiting for them to fail.
