Chapter 3 - Adrien’s return

Five years had passed, and Adrien had blossomed into a robust 15-year-old. His determination to become an elite champion remained unwavering. Gazing out the window, a bright smile spread across his face. "It's hard to believe I'll be free in just a few hours. Five long years since I've seen everyone... I wonder how they've changed. Kade's probably bulked up, Lily's likely shot up a few inches, and sister Ruby... still radiant, no doubt. The thought of reuniting with them sends butterflies through my chest.

"These past five years flew by thanks to Cassandra's unwavering support, despite the risks. Her secret visits kept my spirits high. Now, with freedom within reach, I'll join the Champions and push myself to new heights. My dream is within grasp."

A few hours later, the guards opened Adrien's cell. "Come with us," one said. Adrien smiled, his heart racing with anticipation.

He was escorted to the palace, walking proudly down the corridor.

As he entered the throne room, he saw the Champions standing at attention on either side, their eyes fixed on him. Adrien approached the throne, bowing deeply.

"Your Majesties," he said, his voice steady.

King Sander nodded, his expression stern yet hinting at warmth. "Adrien, your five-year trial has ended. You've demonstrated no evil intentions, only a steadfast dedication to self-improvement and goodness. Tomorrow, the Royal Hall of Magic will host a selection exam for young aspiring Magical Champions. You will join them, and afterward, one of our captains will choose you to join their squad. If not, you'll need to train harder and return next year. Do I make myself clear?"

"Yes, Your Highness," Adrien replied, determination burning within. "Becoming a Champion is my greatest dream. I'll ace this exam."

King Sander's gaze intensified. "Do you promise to protect the kingdom using your unique abilities, even if it means wielding dark magic?"

Adrien's voice rang out, proud and resolute. "I promise. I'll fight darkness with darkness, and I will emerge victorious."

The king smiled, a hint of approval. "Then I wish you the very best. You are officially released."

Adrien bowed deeply. "Thank you, Your Majesties. I won't let you down."

As Adrien stepped outside, a warm ray of sunlight danced across his face. The fresh air filled his lungs, and the sounds of the bustling city enveloped him. But none of it compared to the sight before him.

Cassandra rushed forward, her eyes shining with tears. "Adrien!" she exclaimed, flinging her arms around him.

Adrien's heart swelled as he wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. "Hey," he whispered, his voice choked with emotion.

Cassandra's hug was tight, her warmth and scent enveloping him. He felt a sense of homecoming, of being exactly where he belonged.

"I've been waiting for this day to come," she said, her voice muffled against his shoulder. "We should celebrate!"

Adrien grinned, his eyes closing as he savored the moment. "Definitely," he agreed, his voice filled with joy.

" I'd love to celebrate with Kade, Lily, and sister Ruby," Adrien said, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

Cassandra's face lit up. "Of course! We have to surprise them; they'll be thrilled!" She grasped Adrien's hand, pulling him along.

Together, they sprinted through the palace corridors, laughter echoing off the marble walls. The governess, stern-faced, attempted to intervene.

"Princess, this is most unbecoming. Cease running about the palace like a child!"

Cassandra called out over her shoulder, "Sorry!" But she didn't slow down.

"Then stop running, Your Highness!" the governess pleaded.

Cassandra ignored the reprimand, her joy infectious. Adrien chuckled, feeling carefree for the first time in years.

As they turned a corner, Cassandra collided with her brother, Prince Christopher.

"Chris!" Cassandra exclaimed, as they both stumbled.

Christopher's serious expression softened. "Cassandra, what's gotten into you?" He eyed Adrien.

Cassandra's eyes sparkled as she grasped Adrien's hand, her smile radiant. "Look who's with me! Adrien's finally free after five long years!"

Prince Christopher's expression turned icy, his voice dripping with disdain. "I couldn't care less if this magicless commoner rotted in there or not. You're wasting your time with him, Cassandra."

Adrien's smile faltered, his eyes narrowing in hurt. He felt a sting from Christopher's words.

Cassandra's voice was stern, her brow furrowed. "Christopher, that's cruel and uncalled for. Apologize this instant."

Christopher's face reddened, his jaw clenched. "You deserve better friends, Cassandra. Ones with magic, with status, with—"

Cassandra stood firm, her voice rising. "Adrien's my friend, and he's welcome here. His past doesn't define him."

Just as Christopher's anger seemed about to boil over, Ella and Eira burst into the scene, their laughter and excitement infectious.

"Adrien!!!" they shouted in unison, rushing toward him

Adrien smiled warmly, feeling a sense of belonging. "Ladies Ella, Eira, lovely to see you again."

Ella's eyes sparkled. "We've missed you so much, Adrien! We heard about the selection exam tomorrow. You'll make an amazing Magical Champion!"

Eira nodded vigorously. "We'll be cheering for you!"

Ella's eyes sparkled. "So, which squad will you choose tomorrow? We'd be thrilled to have you join The Kings' squad!"

But Christopher intervened, his tone cold. "No way. The Kings is an elite squad for those with exceptional powers. A magicless commoner doesn't belong."

Cassandra countered, her voice firm. "Think of it, Adrien has dark magic unlike anyone else."

Christopher scoffed. "Dark magic isn't special. We see it all the time in fiends."

Eira jumped in, her voice gentle. "But Adrien is human, and that's unique. His potential is untapped."

Adrien's smile warmed the group. "You girls have been incredibly kind to me since day one. I can't thank you enough. If you hadn't rescued me... I shudder to think what would've become of me. Thank you."

The girls beamed, their faces aglow with affection.

——

Cassandra settled into her chambers with Adrien, a warm smile on her face. "Judith, please bring me a pen and paper."

Her lady-in-waiting, Judith, obliged. "Right away, Princess."

Cassandra's eyes sparkled. "Adrien, today we celebrate your release! Write down everything you'd like to do."

Adrien chuckled. "I've thought about this for years. I already have a list."

He produced a crumpled paper from his pocket, handing it to Cassandra.

"Convenient!" Cassandra said, scanning the list. "Give everyone a hug, bouquet for Sister Ruby, amusement park, 20 flavors of ice cream, broom riding with friends..."

Her eyes met Adrien's. "What's Sister Ruby's favorite flower?"

Adrien's gaze drifted, lost in thought. Memories of his childhood flooded back – Sister Ruby tending to her garden, nurturing daffodils.

"Daffodils," he said softly. "Those were her favorites."

Judith nodded. "I'll get them immediately."

As Judith departed, Cassandra stood. "The carriage awaits, Adrien. Shall we?"

Outside, Judith handed Adrien a delicate bouquet of daffodils.

"Thank you, Lady Judith," Adrien said, gratitude in his voice.

Judith smiled. "You're welcome."

The carriage door closed behind them, ready to embark on Adrien's celebratory adventure.

——

They arrived at Ruby's new home in town. "Are you ready, Adrien?" Cassandra asked.

Adrien nodded. "Yeah."

Cassandra knocked on the door. A little boy answered, his eyes wide.

"Hey there, little guy. Where are the adults?" Cassandra asked.

Sister Ruby appeared, surprise etched on her face. "Your Majesty, it's you."

She bowed deeply. Cassandra smiled warmly. "Nice to see you again, Sister."

The little boy's eyes sparkled. "You're the princess! You're so pretty!"

Cassandra chuckled. "Thank you."

Ruby's curiosity grew. "What brings you here, Your Majesty?"

Cassandra's smile hinted at a surprise. "I have something for you."

Ruby's eyes widened as Adrien stepped forward, daffodils in hand.

"Sister Ruby!" Adrien exclaimed.

Tears brimmed in Ruby's eyes as she rushed to Adrien, embracing him tightly.

Just then, Lily and Kade emerged from the house.

"Sister, what's—?" Kade began.

Their eyes locked onto Adrien, and they sprinted toward him.

"Adrien!" they shouted in unison, wrapping him in a tight hug.

Adrien's heart swelled. "I've missed you all."

As they hugged, Adrien's thoughts drifted. "I've never been this happy in five years. They're all I have since the incident... I'm glad they're safe."

He gazed at his friends, marveling at their growth.

"Kade's taller, his voice deeper.

Lily's blossomed into a young woman."

Joy filled Adrien's heart, grateful for this reunion.

The little boy's curiosity remained. "Who's he?"

Ruby smiled warmly. "This is Adrien, the one we've told you about."

Noah's eyes widened. "Ohhh, nice to meet you, Adrien!"

Adrien smiled. "Who's this little guy?"

Ruby's eyes sparkled. "This is Noah. He's part of our family now."

Adrien's face lit up. "Nice to meet you,Noah ."

As they entered the house, Ruby arranged the daffodils in a delicate bowl.

Sister Ruby's voice filled with warmth. "If I'd known you'd be released today, I would've prepared dinner to celebrate your return. But that's not too late, is it?"

Adrien's eyes shone. "I've craved your cooking for years. That would be wonderful."

Ruby turned to Cassandra. "Your Majesty, would you care to join us?"

Cassandra smiled graciously. "I'd love to. I came to celebrate, after all. Adrien wanted some outdoor fun first..."

Ruby's face lit up. "Oh, wonderful! You kids go celebrate. I'll prepare dinner."

Noah's excitement was contagious. "An outdoor celebration with the princess! I'm in!"

The group erupted into laughter at Noah's infectious enthusiasm.

The group excitedly ventured to the magical amusement park, comprising Adrien, Cassandra, Lily, Kade, and Judith.

Their thrilling day included horse rides, ferris wheel spins, roller coaster screams, photo ops, free fall towers, spinning teacups, water slides, and indulging in cotton candies, ice cream, and popcorn.

After the amusement park, they visited the broom store, acquiring magic brooms.

"Can you even ride a broom?" Kade curiously asked.

"I don't know!" they chimed in unison.

With newfound brooms, they took to the skies. Lily and Noah soared together, reveling in the breeze, while Cassandra rode with Judith.

Adrien paired up with Kade, who accelerated the broom.

"Slow down!!" Adrien shouted, but Kade grinned.

"The faster, the better!" he exclaimed, speeding up until Adrien fell off.

Kade swiftly caught him, and they continued their aerial adventure.

The group glided above the town, taking in the breathtaking views.

As the sun began to set, they headed back, filled with laughter and unforgettable memories.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the group's excitement still lingered.

"Whooooooo! That was epic!" Adrien exclaimed.

Kade grinned. "Best day ever! I'm so glad we got to share it with you, Adrien."

Lily's eyes sparkled. "We should do it again soon."

Kai chuckled. "You guys are amazing."

Cassandra smiled warmly. "I'm thrilled you all had a blast. Now, let's head back. Sister Ruby must have dinner ready."

At Ruby's house, the aroma of roasted meats and steaming vegetables filled the air.

"Welcome home, everyone!" Ruby said, beaming. "I made Adrien's favorite dishes."

Adrien's eyes widened. "Thank you, Sister Ruby. This looks incredible."

As they sat down to eat, laughter and conversation flowed.

After dinner, Cassandra stood. "Tomorrow's the entry exam. I'll send someone to pick you up at 8 am. Be ready."

"We will," Adrien replied.

With a final smile, Cassandra left, and the group waved goodbye.

Adrien approached Kade with a grin. "Hey, Kade! Did you power up while I was away?"

Kade flexed, his eyes gleaming. "You have no idea! I've reached new heights!"

Adrien chuckled. "Bring it on! I've got some tricks up my sleeve too."

"Time to settle this!" Kade exclaimed, and they headed outside.

Ruby called after them, "Boys, please! Not now!"

But they were too far gone, eager to clash.

Kade sneered. "Don't expect special treatment just because you're back."

Adrien smirked. "I don't need it. I'm the future elite champion."

Their magic ignited, drawing a crowd. Kade unleashed "Earthquake!", shaking the ground.

Adrien transformed into Vyltari form, unleashing dark flames. Kade countered with "Terror Shield", conjuring rock barriers.

The battle raged on. Adrien shattered Kade's shields with "Earthshatter", but Kade adapted with "Stone Seeing", encasing his fists in stone.

Their exchange intensified. Adrien dodged Kade's attacks, landing swift, invisible punches with "Shadow Strike".

Just as they prepared finishing blows, Lily intervened.

"Cat Magic: Striking Claws!" Her claws disrupted their magic.

"Enough!" Lily commanded.

Kade smirked. "You're lucky she intervened. Otherwise, you'd be down."

Adrien grinned. "The real test comes tomorrow. Let's see who wins more challenges."

Kade smiled. "Game on."
