Chapter 2 - The hunted Tower

Melvin could feel his head being bumped around.

Though he was laid down properly, but it wasn't enough.

His body jolted every few seconds as the carriage stopped and lurched forward again.

He opened his eyes and saw a wooden ceiling. Sunlight filtered through the thin curtains covering the windows, casting faint golden lines across the polished interior.

Across from him sat a man in a robe, an insignia etched in his chest.

A mage.

The man had long blonde hair and a bushy beard, rough and tangled like an old bear's.

Melvin could have sworn something was moving inside it.

His build was bulky.

His eyes had been fixed on Melvin the entire time.

However Melvin stayed still, pretending to be asleep

He said nothing, letting his thought run.

'Wait… is this the part where I'm sent to the Tower?

He remembered it clearly.

After Seth poisoned himself and was saved, he was sent to the Tower by the Duke—his father—as a punishment. But it was never really punishment.

It was a way to get rid of him.

He lived there for years, powerless, abandoned.. until he died in an accident.

Melvin lying there knew it.

He was already on his way to the Tower but something felt off.

In the original manhwa, they knew that Seth had poisoned himself, but now

they didn't know he had poisoned himself which was why he had transmigrated; still, why is he being taken to the Tower since nobody knows he had died?

And this time, it wasn't the Duke who had sent him, but Helen.

'it seemed they just want to get rid of him'

'Wait, does that mean the plot changed and I am not going to die?'

Either way he considered it a tragic life; even his past life was better.

His thoughts drifted back.

In his previous life, Melvin had been a small-time manager. Competent—but broke.

He woke up early, went to work, came back late, read manga, slept for a few hours, then repeated the same routine.

He lived in a crowded building with hundreds of tenants, always rushing to use shared facilities.

Three hours to work. Three hours back.

No friend. No family. No girlfriend.

Just a cycle.

Until one day—

He collapsed on the train.

Dead from exhaustion.

And now…

He woke up to something worse.

It is not fair… it just isn't.

He sniffled lightly, holding back the emotion that threatened to take over.

Unknown to him, the mage across from him had already noticed his strange movement.

" Sigh…I know you're awake. So why don't you stand up and stop pretending about being asleep" the Mage said, the irritation in voice made Melvin flinch.

He quickly sat up, afraid of being struck again by that blue energy.

Now seated, he avoided the man's gaze, staring at the floor instead.

The man scoffed.

"You know….I could have sworn you're not the Duke son if I hadn't been there when you were born"

Melvin clenched his jaw.

'talk all you want.. you would be licking boots real soon'

The mage reached into his robe and pulled out a pendant, handling it to him.

"Here. A gift… and a reminder from your father."

Melvin took the black chain, Simple and heavy.

It seemed familiar.

Then it hit him.

It was a chain given to those cast out of the family.

A final token.

 His grip tightened.

'So they have really abandoned me…'

He hadn't expected kindness—but this confirmed it.

He was no longer part of the family.

"You shouldn't dwell on it," the mage said. "Live quietly…and drop the Wavemert name. That was the Duke's final command."

'so he knew after all'

Melvin raised a brow.

Live quietly?.

He almost laughed.

His life was already hell.

Either way the carriage came to a stop.

"We are here!" The driver called.

The mage gestured for him to get down, and followed him.

Before Melvin stood a tall tower. Twelve floors high.

Old. Cracked.

The walls were worn, the window broken, stains covering the surface.

It looked abandoned.

Lifeless.

But all that didn't waver Melvin, he already knew this was the tower.

In the novel, it was more described as a haunted place, when the protagonist—Seth's brother, was talking to his friends, telling them about his useless brother who was sent to the Tower.

He couldn't expect less.

The inside was worse.

Dust, broken furniture, cobwebs clinging to the ceiling.

An old woman sat behind a worn counter.

Her face was lowered, as if she had something under the table she didn't want to be seen.

"Hey, madam Garcia!" the mage called behind Melvin.

The old woman glanced up briefly, then just like that, she returned to what she was doing without a word, as if she hadn't just seen them.

Melvin blinked.

'That's…it?'

"Well that explains it," the mage muttered, unaffected by the reaction.

Then he pushed Melvin forward—not hard, but enough to make him stumble.

Melvin turned, anger flashing in his eyes.

"Here. Your new home," the mage said with a smirk. "Be nice to the old woman… who knows she might like you" he laughed and walked away, closing the wooden door.

And he was gone leaving only Melvin in this forsaken place.

Melvin stood there, fist clenched.

'i swear… you'll be the first to pay'

He looked at the pendant.

'And you Wavemert, I will make you all regret this.'

Then—

Ding!

Melvin stared at the screen.

He blinked then a smile played in his lips.

"At last… a golden finger."
