Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Man He Has Become

Winter arrived quietly in the city.

Cold winds swept through the streets, carrying the smell of smoke and street food from the night markets. People walked faster now, their breath visible in the freezing air as they hurried between buildings.

But inside Golden Phoenix Nightclub, the heat of money and power never faded.

Music roared.

Glasses clinked.

And behind the doors ordinary customers never saw, decisions were made that controlled the entire district.

Tonight, the private office on the third floor was full again.

Several gang leaders from smaller groups sat around the table, waiting.

Some looked nervous.

Others tried to hide their unease behind forced confidence.

At the head of the table sat Chen Guoqiang.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Beside him stood Zhang Qiang.

And near the window, silent as always, stood Li Wei.

The city lights reflected across his face.

Over the past months, his appearance had changed.

His shoulders had grown broader.

His movements more controlled.

The uncertainty that once filled his eyes was gone.

Now there was only something colder.

Something harder.

Something the city understood very well.

Power.

One of the smaller gang leaders cleared his throat.

"Boss Chen… about the territory dispute…"

Chen didn't respond immediately.

Instead, he poured tea slowly into a porcelain cup.

The silence in the room grew heavy.

Finally, he spoke.

"You all know why you're here."

The men exchanged uneasy looks.

Chen placed the teacup down.

"For years, this district has remained stable because everyone understood one rule."

He paused.

"No one challenges my authority."

One of the men shifted nervously.

"We respect that, Boss Chen."

Chen smiled faintly.

"I'm glad."

Then he gestured toward Li Wei.

"But times change."

The room grew quiet again.

Chen leaned back in his chair.

"This man has helped maintain that stability."

Several of the gang leaders studied Li Wei carefully.

They had heard the rumors.

The warehouse fight.

The restaurant incident.

The northern gang retreating from the city.

Now they were seeing him in person.

One of them spoke cautiously.

"Boss Chen… people say he's the one who broke the Black Tiger leader."

Zhang Qiang laughed.

"That story gets better every week."

Chen looked toward Li Wei.

"Step forward."

Li Wei walked to the table.

His footsteps were quiet.

But the weight behind them felt heavy.

Chen folded his hands.

"From tonight onward," he announced calmly, "Li Wei will oversee several of our operations."

The room exploded with whispers.

One man frowned.

"That's a lot of responsibility for someone new."

Chen's eyes turned cold.

"Do you have a problem with that?"

The man quickly lowered his gaze.

"No… Boss Chen."

Chen nodded once.

"Good."

Then he looked at Li Wei.

"Show them why I trust you."

Later that night, Li Wei stood outside the nightclub.

Snow had begun to fall lightly.

White flakes drifted slowly under the streetlights.

Zhang Qiang stepped beside him.

"Big promotion," Zhang said.

Li Wei remained quiet.

Zhang studied him carefully.

"You know what this means, right?"

Li Wei glanced at him.

"It means people will start watching me."

Zhang grinned.

"And trying to kill you."

Li Wei didn't react.

Zhang laughed.

"You're getting used to this life."

Li Wei looked out at the busy street.

"You said the city is a jungle."

Zhang nodded.

"It is."

Li Wei's voice remained calm.

"Then predators don't worry about being watched."

Zhang raised his eyebrows.

"Well said."

He lit a cigarette.

"But remember something."

Li Wei looked at him.

Zhang exhaled smoke slowly.

"In this jungle…"

"…even predators can be hunted."

That same night, in a small apartment across the city, a young woman stood by the window.

Snow fell softly outside.

Her name was Mei Lin.

The room was simple.

Just like the small house she once shared with her husband.

Years had passed.

But she had never moved away.

Never left the village memories behind.

In her hands she held an old photograph.

A picture taken on the day of her wedding.

In it, a younger Li Wei stood beside her.

Smiling.

Hopeful.

A man who believed he could build a better future.

Mei Lin gently touched the photo.

The wind outside rattled the window slightly.

She whispered softly into the quiet room.

"Are you safe… Li Wei?"

Far away across the city, Li Wei stood under falling snow outside Golden Phoenix.

The man she loved no longer existed.

In his place stood someone the city was beginning to fear.

A man whose name now traveled through the underworld like a growing storm.

A man who had no idea that fate was already preparing something far darker for him.

Because somewhere in this vast city…

A young girl was growing up.

A girl whose life would one day collide with his.

And when that day finally came, it would destroy everything he had built.
