Chapter 17 - Chapter - 17 The Final Over of the First Innings

The morning sun had climbed higher above the ground, spreading a warm golden light across the cricket field. The match had reached a stage where the tension was thick enough to be felt in the air.

Spectators stood near the boundary rope, whispering among themselves.

Some leaned forward.

Some crossed their arms nervously.

Everyone knew the same thing.

This match had become a battle of nerves.

The scoreboard displayed the situation clearly.

Team A – 136 / 6 after 19 overs

Just one over remained in the first innings.

Six balls.

Six moments that could change everything.

The batting team believed they could still push the score past 150.

The fielding team believed they could stop them under 145.

The game stood perfectly balanced.

Fifty–fifty.

The captain of Arjun's team walked slowly across the field, thinking carefully.

His eyes scanned his bowlers.

Then they stopped on one player.

Arjun.

The young bowler stood near the boundary line, wiping sweat from his forehead.

This was his first official match.

Yet throughout the game he had bowled with discipline.

The captain raised his hand.

"Arjun… you take the final over."

For a moment, Arjun felt his heart jump inside his chest.

The final over.

The most dangerous over of any innings.

The batsmen at the crease were known for aggressive hitting.

They were waiting for exactly this moment.

But Arjun nodded calmly.

Inside his mind, something awakened.

This wasn't fear.

It was excitement.

A chance to prove himself.

From the boundary line, Karn watched silently.

His sharp eyes followed Arjun carefully.

Karn had trained countless players before, but this boy carried something unusual.

Not just talent.

But a quiet hunger.

Let's see how you handle the fire, Karn thought.

Arjun walked to the top of his run-up.

He held the ball tightly.

The batsman at the striker's end looked confident.

He tapped his bat twice on the pitch and stared straight at Arjun.

This batsman had already hit two boundaries earlier in the innings.

He smirked slightly.

"First match?" he asked casually.

Arjun said nothing.

The batsman continued.

"Bad luck for you… death overs are my favourite."

His teammates behind him laughed softly.

It was a small attempt to break the young bowler's confidence.

But Arjun simply turned around and walked back to his run-up.

He wasn't interested in words.

He preferred answers with the ball.

The umpire raised his arm.

The fielders spread out into defensive positions.

Long-on.

Long-off.

Deep midwicket.

Third man.

Fine leg.

Everything ready to protect the boundary.

The crowd fell silent.

Arjun took a deep breath.

Then he started running.

Ball 1

His footsteps echoed softly across the pitch.

The batsman lifted his bat high, ready to attack.

Arjun released the ball with precision.

A perfect yorker.

The ball shot toward the base of the stumps like a bullet.

The batsman reacted late.

His bat came down awkwardly.

The ball struck the lower edge and rolled toward midwicket.

"Run!"

Both batsmen sprinted quickly.

The fielder rushed in and threw the ball instantly.

They completed only one run.

The crowd clapped in appreciation.

Score: 137 / 6

The batsman looked annoyed.

He wanted a boundary.

Instead, he got a single.

He glanced at Arjun again.

"Good ball," he said sarcastically.

"But five more left."

Arjun walked back quietly.

Ball 2

The new striker stepped forward.

This batsman looked more dangerous.

His eyes were filled with confidence.

He twirled his bat slowly.

"You're lucky that wasn't me facing," he said.

Arjun ignored him.

He focused only on the ball in his hand.

He ran again.

This time he delivered a slower ball disguised perfectly.

The batsman expected pace.

He swung early.

The ball climbed high into the sky toward long-off.

For a moment the entire ground froze.

The fielder ran underneath it.

But the ball dropped just short of him.

The batsmen quickly ran two runs.

Score: 139 / 6

The batsman smiled proudly.

"See?" he shouted.

"You can't stop everything."

The pressure began rising again.

Four balls left.

Ball 3

Arjun walked back slowly.

His captain approached him.

"Stay calm," he whispered.

"Just bowl your plan."

Arjun nodded.

Inside his mind, he analysed the batsman carefully.

He wants to dominate… he wants to break my confidence.

Arjun started running again.

This time he bowled a sharp length ball outside off stump.

The batsman swung aggressively.

But the ball took a faint edge of the bat.

It flew toward third man.

The fielders reacted quickly.

They allowed only one run.

Score: 140 / 6

Three balls remaining.

The batsman on strike now was their finisher.

The most dangerous hitter in their lineup.

He stepped forward with pure arrogance.

He looked straight into Arjun's eyes.

"You're brave," he said calmly.

"But bravery doesn't stop sixes."

Arjun's expression remained cold.

"Let's see," he replied quietly.

Ball 4

The tension in the stadium reached another level.

Arjun ran forward again.

This time he delivered a full delivery slightly wide.

The batsman's eyes lit up.

He swung with full strength.

CRACK!

The sound echoed across the ground.

The ball flew like a rocket toward deep midwicket.

The crowd gasped.

It looked like a certain six.

But the boundary fielder leaped at the last moment and stopped the ball brilliantly.

The batsmen ran two runs.

Score: 142 / 6

The batsman raised his bat proudly toward Arjun.

"You're surviving," he said.

"But the next one is leaving the stadium."

Two balls left.

The game could still explode.

Ball 5

Arjun stood silently at his mark.

The batsman was now fully confident.

He tapped his bat hard against the pitch.

"Come on, bowler," he shouted.

"Give me something worth hitting."

The crowd waited anxiously.

Arjun closed his eyes for a second.

He remembered every training session.

Every early morning practice.

Every instruction from Karn.

Then he ran.

This time he bowled a perfect slower yorker.

The batsman expected a fast ball.

He swung early with full power.

But the ball dipped suddenly.

It slid under his bat.

And smashed into the middle stump.

BOOM!

The stumps exploded backward.

The batsman stood frozen.

His ego shattered along with the stumps.

For a moment the entire stadium was silent.

Then Arjun raised his fist.

His teammates rushed toward him shouting with excitement.

Score: 142 / 7

One ball remaining.

Ball 6 – The Final Ball

A new batsman hurried to the crease.

He had only one responsibility.

Hit the last ball for a boundary.

Arjun walked back slowly to his run-up.

Everyone in the stadium was watching him now.

Even Karn's expression had changed.

There was a faint smile on his face.

Impressive, he thought.

Arjun began his final run.

The batsman swung wildly.

But Arjun delivered a fast yorker aimed at the leg stump.

The batsman mistimed the shot.

The ball rolled toward short fine leg.

"Run!" they shouted desperately.

They sprinted for the single.

But the fielder attacked the ball instantly.

He threw it toward the wicketkeeper.

The keeper caught it and shattered the stumps.

RUN OUT!

The innings ended dramatically.

End of the First Innings

Team A – 143 / 8 (20 overs)

Arjun's final over had given away only 7 runs and a crucial wicket.

His teammates surrounded him immediately.

"Brilliant bowling!" one shouted.

"That over saved the match!"

Even the captain smiled proudly.

The young bowler who had entered the match quietly had now earned the trust of the team.

Then someone walked toward him.

It was Karn.

The field slowly became silent again.

Arjun stood straight as Karn approached.

Karn placed a firm hand on his shoulder.

"Good work," he said calmly.

"You handled pressure better than most experienced bowlers."

Those simple words carried enormous weight.

The rest of the team looked at Arjun differently now.

Not as a newcomer.

But as someone reliable.

Someone they could trust in difficult moments.

Arjun glanced once at the scoreboard again.

Target: 144 runs

Now the responsibility would shift.

They had to bat.

The players began walking toward the pavilion.

The real battle was only beginning.

And somewhere inside Arjun's chest…

A new confidence had been born.
