Chapter 20 — The Weight of Silence

Koryn Zod had faced many challenges in the Academy—combat simulations, strategic failures, even humiliation in front of rival cadets. None of it had shaken him the way Von-Ra's revelation had.

Krypton… dying.

The words echoed in his mind like a death sentence.

He paced inside his chamber, fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned pale. His breathing was uneven, his mind racing through every possibility.

Impossible…

But he knew Von-Ra was not the type to exaggerate.

If Von-Ra said the planetary core was collapsing… then it likely was.

For the first time in his life, Koryn felt true fear.

Fear not of defeat, not of failure—but of extinction.

His people.

His home.

Everything.

He stopped pacing and stared at the city skyline beyond the glass walls. Krypton's towers glittered with technological brilliance, the proud monument of a civilization thousands of years old.

And yet… it might all vanish.

Koryn's jaw tightened.

"No…" he muttered.

Fear slowly hardened into determination.

If Krypton truly faced destruction, then doing nothing was not an option.

There was only one person he could turn to.

His father.

House of Zod

The doors to the Zod command chamber opened with a low mechanical hiss.

Inside stood General Dru-Zod, studying a holographic projection of Krypton's military formations.

He didn't look up.

"You rarely visit unannounced, Koryn," Dru-Zod said calmly. "What troubles you?"

Koryn hesitated.

For a moment, he considered staying silent.

But the weight of the secret crushed his restraint.

"Father… I need to ask you something."

Now Dru-Zod looked at him.

The general's eyes were sharp—observant enough to notice the tension in his son's posture immediately.

"Speak."

Koryn swallowed.

"What if… Krypton itself were in danger?"

Dru-Zod's gaze narrowed slightly.

"That is a very large question."

Koryn stepped forward.

"What if the planetary core were unstable? What if it wasn't just fluctuations… but something worse?"

Silence filled the chamber.

Dru-Zod did not respond immediately.

Instead, he studied his son carefully.

"You did not come to this conclusion alone," the general said slowly. "Who told you this?"

Koryn hesitated again.

"…Von-Ra."

The name hung in the air.

Dru-Zod leaned back slightly, considering.

"Interesting."

Koryn stepped closer, urgency in his voice.

"Father, if it's true—if the core is collapsing—shouldn't we act? Shouldn't the council know?"

Dru-Zod's expression hardened.

"They likely already do."

Koryn froze.

"…What?"

But the general said nothing more.

Monitoring the Core

Deep beneath Krypton's surface, massive stabilizer systems surrounded the glowing planetary core.

Standing before the observation platform were Zor-El and his son.

Von-Ra studied the energy readings with quiet focus.

The numbers had worsened.

Not dramatically.

But enough for someone paying attention.

Which most people were not.

Zor-El sighed quietly.

"You see it too."

Von-Ra nodded.

"The degradation rate has increased."

For a moment neither spoke.

They both understood the implication.

Then Zor-El reached the console and began compiling the official report.

Von-Ra watched him.

"…Father."

"Yes?"

"You're going to omit the critical projections again."

Zor-El didn't deny it.

"Yes."

The report finalized.

Planetary core status: unstable but manageable.

Von-Ra's jaw tightened slightly.

This lie had been repeated for years.

A carefully constructed illusion meant to keep the council—and Krypton—calm.

"Sometimes," Zor-El said quietly, "truth alone is not enough to change anything."

Von-Ra said nothing.

But his silence carried disagreement.

The Council Convenes

The Council Hall filled with voices.

Representatives of Krypton's great houses gathered beneath towering crystalline pillars. Political alliances, rivalries, and ambitions filled the air like static electricity.

The meeting began with routine reports.

Economic growth.

Military readiness.

Scientific updates.

Eventually, Zor-El stepped forward to present his findings.

"The planetary core continues to show fluctuations," he reported calmly. "However, the instability remains within manageable thresholds."

Several councilors nodded.

Others barely listened.

One council member spoke up.

"Have there been any significant changes since the previous report?"

"Minor variations only," Zor-El answered.

A scientist from House Ze spoke next.

"Then our current stabilization systems remain sufficient."

Another councilor disagreed.

"Resources for additional core monitoring would be wasteful when our energy grid already functions perfectly."

The debate quickly shifted.

Funding.

Infrastructure.

Scientific priorities.

Military expansion.

Multiple agendas collided.

Some argued for greater research investment.

Others demanded military reinforcement.

And some… simply wanted to maintain the status quo.

Among them sat General Dru-Zod.

Silent.

Beside him stood Koryn.

Both listened carefully.

Both knew the truth hidden behind Zor-El's calm report.

The core wasn't "manageable."

It was dying.

Yet neither spoke.

The Zod family commanded a vast portion of Krypton's military forces—but even their power had limits.

Against the entire council…

They would lose.

So Dru-Zod remained still.

Watching.

Listening.

Occasionally his gaze shifted.

Not toward the arguing councilors.

But toward the delegation of House of El.

Koryn noticed it too.

He followed his father's gaze across the chamber.

Toward the scientist who had just finished delivering the carefully sanitized report.

Toward the family hiding the same terrifying truth.

And for a brief moment—

House of Zod and House of El exchanged silent acknowledgment across the council floor.

They both knew.

But neither side spoke.

Because on Krypton…

Truth was not decided by facts.

It was decided by power.

And the council held far more power than either house alone.

The meeting continued.

The lies continued.

And the fate of Krypton quietly edged closer to catastrophe.
