Chapter 19 — Understanding between rivals

The early glow of Krypton's twin moons barely touched the edges of the Academy as Von-Ra slipped through corridors rarely visited at night. The hallways were empty, silent except for the hum of energy conduits. No one could see him—no one except the watchful eyes of the council in their observation decks, though they did not yet know his intent.

Von-Ra's mind was precise, calculating. Every step he took was measured. He had learned much from five years of Academy discipline: observation, strategy, patience. Now, he applied it not to simulations or debates, but to the most urgent problem he had ever encountered—the instability of Krypton's core.

He arrived at the restricted lab where energy flow records and core telemetry were archived. The doors, normally locked, were overridden using subtle access codes he had memorized from observation and deduction. Once inside, he immersed himself in readings, charts, and simulations.

The planetary core's energy oscillations were not random. Something deep within Krypton's mantle had begun shifting—a slow, deliberate degradation of its stabilizing matrix. If left unchecked, the consequences would be catastrophic within decades. Von-Ra traced the data, cross-referencing historical readings, noting a pattern that stretched back decades, confirming Zor-El's warning.

A soft vibration in his chest caught his attention—a subtle reaction he hadn't felt before. His Viltrumite heritage, long dormant, was beginning to stir, the unrest he feel is washed by the discipline embedded by his Vitrumite blood. The sensation was faint but undeniable: a surge of awareness, a sharpening of focus, as if his body and mind were reacting to the planet's instability. He paused, closing his eyes, trying to calibrate the feeling.

Not yet, he reminded himself. Patience. Observation. Knowledge first.

He returned to the simulations. For hours he ran models, testing interventions, predicting outcomes. Some showed minor adjustments might stabilize the core temporarily, but the council would never approve any action. Any suggestion would be twisted, silenced, or claimed for personal gain.

A sudden knock on the door startled him. Von-Ra's eyes darted to the entrance, calculating. "Who's there?" he called, keeping his voice calm.

"Von-Ra?" It was Koryn, shoving the door slightly open. "I thought I heard footsteps. What are you doing here at this hour?"

Von-Ra's expression softened but remained wary. "I am… examining a problem. Something the Academy and the council would rather ignore."

Koryn's brow furrowed. "You mean… like some secret experiment? Von-Ra, this isn't the battlefield. Even the council watches too closely."

Von-Ra shook his head. "Not an experiment. Something bigger. If Krypton is truly in danger, waiting for approval could be fatal. I cannot stand idle."

then he explain to Koryn what he discover through relentless research and investigation.

Koryn hesitated, conflicted. He respected Von-Ra's brilliance, but the risk… the audacity… it made his stomach tighten. "And your father? Zor-El… he knows, right?"

"Yes," Von-Ra admitted quietly. "He warned me. Told me to stop. But I cannot. Not when the planet itself is failing."

Koryn's eyes flickered, a mix of admiration and concern. "You're really going to do this… alone?"

Von-Ra's gaze hardened. "Alone, if I must. But not blindly. Every calculation, every observation is a step toward understanding. Krypton's survival depends on knowledge, not fear."

As Koryn left quietly, Von-Ra returned to his instruments. The night stretched on, and for the first time, he sensed a faint resonance within his own being—a whisper of power lying dormant, waiting to manifest when the time was right.

He paused to stare at the holographic projection of Krypton's core, its layers spinning and fluctuating. "I will not fail," he whispered to himself. "Even if the council brands me a traitor. Even if the world turns against me… I will save Krypton. For Kara. For the future. For all of us."
