Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3; THE ARTIFACTS AWAKENS

The rain had ceased yet the streets of Linhai City continued to gleam beneath the persistent neon glow with puddles reflecting fractured lights that transformed the sidewalks into something resembling shattered stained glass while Lin Yue walked beside Mo Chen his coat drawn tightly around his shoulders as the damp night air clung persistently to his hair and skin and his mind still raced with the vivid aftermath of the alley encounter a demon a glowing sword and the unnervingly confident stranger who had introduced himself as Mo Chen.

He harbored so many questions yet none felt safe enough to voice aloud until finally he spoke in a low tone nearly lost amid the emptiness of the street asking "Why me why did that thing come after me."

Mo Chen glanced sideways at him one corner of his lips rising into that infuriatingly teasing smirk as he replied "Because Doctor you're interesting very interesting and right now very valuable" with his crimson eyes glimmering softly in the dim ambient light.

Lin Yue's frown deepened as he protested "Valuable I'm just a medical intern I'm not I'm not involved in whatever this is."

Mo Chen chuckled softly the sound drifting easily through the quiet night and answered "You don't get to decide that not anymore."

They turned a corner entering a quieter more desolate section of the city where abandoned warehouses lined the street their corrugated metal walls rusted and pitted while faint echoes of the earlier confrontation lingered somewhere behind them though curiously no one else had come to investigate.

"You should come with me" Mo Chen said abruptly halting before a warehouse with a cracked metal door which he pushed open releasing a strange mingled scent of dust and metal that immediately struck Lin Yue's senses and continued "there's something here you need to see."

Lin Yue hesitated before taking a cautious step inside the warehouse which proved large yet mostly empty with broken crates and old machinery scattered across the floor beneath a thin gray veil of dust yet in the center of the room atop a raised stone pedestal rested an object that instantly captured his full attention.

It was small roughly the size of a human fist but it radiated undeniable power its surface shimmering faintly like liquid glass under the subdued light while the patterns etched into it shifted and moved as though alive accompanied by a faint hum that resonated through the air and vibrated subtly along Lin Yue's bones.

"What what is that" he whispered.

Mo Chen's eyes glimmered within the shadowed expanse of the warehouse as he replied slowly "That is an ancient artifact very old very dangerous and right now very interested in you."

Lin Yue frowned and began "Interested in me how can an object" before he could finish the thought the artifact pulsed sending a strange sensation coursing through him like a whisper in his mind soft at first almost imperceptible then growing steadily stronger tugging insistently at something buried deep within him until his chest tightened and his heartbeat thundered loudly in his ears.

"What what is happening" Lin Yue asked his voice unsteady.

Mo Chen stepped closer explaining "The artifact senses power something inside you something dormant it's reacting to it and you Doctor are about to become very connected to it."

Before Lin Yue could formulate any response the artifact emitted a sudden intense surge of light causing the air within the warehouse to shift violently as dust rose from the floor swirling in the abrupt wind while Lin Yue stumbled and gripped a nearby crate to steady himself.

"Step back" Mo Chen instructed his voice calm yet unmistakably commanding as he raised his hand allowing a faint crimson aura to envelop him while his eyes narrowed in focus.

But Lin Yue found himself unable to retreat something compelled him forward with a magnetic pull far stronger than any force he had ever encountered his body moving as though guided by an invisible hand until the artifact floated upward from the pedestal spinning slowly in the air before a beam of pale light shot toward him striking his chest warm and piercing prompting him to gasp and stagger backward as his vision blurred and the world around him seemed to fracture allowing him to feel Mo Chen's presence not merely nearby but intertwined within his very being.

Mo Chen frowned his characteristic smirk vanishing for a brief instant as he observed "So it's responding to both of us."

"What what do you mean" Lin Yue whispered panic steadily rising within his chest.

"You're bound" Mo Chen explained stepping closer "by the artifact you can't see it yet but your souls your energy it's linked and this bond is not going anywhere."

Lin Yue's breath caught as he repeated "Linked what what do you mean linked how how is that possible."

Mo Chen's crimson eyes shimmered with an emotion difficult to decipher as he continued "It's rare very rare two people their energy their life force intertwined it's supposed to happen only with cultivators of tremendous potential or in some unusual circumstances."

Lin Yue swallowed hard now acutely aware of an almost electric sensation as though his very essence vibrated in perfect tandem with Mo Chen's so that even the slightest movement from the other man produced a subtle echoing pull within his own body.

"I don't understand I don't even know what you are" Lin Yue said panic threading through his voice "why is this happening to me."

Mo Chen crouched slightly offering a faint smile "Because Doctor you're more than you realize that's all you need to know for now and because the world you've lived in so far has been hiding something from you."

Lin Yue's head spun his thoughts fragmenting supernatural things demons artifacts capable of linking souls and yet despite the overwhelming terror a small strange part of him experienced an unusual curiosity a spark of recognition he hesitated to acknowledge.

The artifact continued to hover between them pulsing softly until suddenly it extended a tendril of energy toward Mo Chen wrapping around his arm before connecting back to Lin Yue in a glowing thread of light the instantaneous overwhelming connection causing him to stumble to his knees clutching his chest as the sensation surged through every part of him.

"You feel that" Mo Chen asked softly his own hand hovering near the luminous bond "that's the bond you'll feel it all the time now when I'm hurt you'll feel it when you're in danger I'll know when our energy resonates well that's going to be very interesting."

Lin Yue's chest heaved as he struggled to protest to run to scream but the connection rendered even basic thoughts difficult allowing him to feel Mo Chen not just near him but echoing through every nerve every heartbeat.

"This is impossible" Lin Yue managed to gasp "it can't this shouldn't."

Mo Chen crouched once more studying him with eyes that glimmered like crimson fire and said "Welcome to the real Linhai City Doctor nothing about your life will ever be normal again."

The artifact pulsed again and for a fleeting moment Lin Yue glimpsed visions shattered fragments of light glimpses of battles flashes of impossible places creatures that defied existence he gasped overwhelmed by the relentless flood of sensations.

"Focus" Mo Chen's voice cut sharply through the disorienting haze as he reached out gripping Lin Yue's shoulders firmly "you need to stabilize your energy feel me match me breathe if you fight it it will hurt you more."

Lin Yue obeyed instinctively aligning his breathing with the steady rhythm of Mo Chen's until gradually the chaotic rush of energy within him began to settle the glow of the artifact stabilizing while the pulsing thread linking them dimmed though it never fully vanished.

When Lin Yue finally opened his eyes he found Mo Chen's smirk returning as the man remarked "See not so bad."

Lin Yue shook his head his voice still unsteady "I I don't even know what just happened."

"You'll find out" Mo Chen replied standing and brushing off his robes "but for now let's get out of here before someone else shows up and decides both of us are interesting targets."

Lin Yue struggled to his feet legs weak as he echoed "Targets."

Mo Chen's crimson eyes flicked toward the shadows beyond the warehouse "Yes things in this city don't like being ignored and now they'll be noticing you."

Lin Yue's chest tightened as he asked "Me why me."

Mo Chen chuckled a low playful sound that twisted Lin Yue's stomach in an inexplicable way "Because Doctor you're special and I don't let interesting things slip away."

Lin Yue swallowed hard wanting to resent the smirk the teasing tone the effortless confidence yet a small strange part of him remained unable to look away.

"Come on" Mo Chen said turning toward the exit "you're going to need training and explanations but first you need to survive tonight."

The city waited outside neon lights reflecting across wet streets as Lin Yue followed unsure of everything his life the city the artifact even the man who seemed determined to both protect and provoke him.

But one truth stood undeniable nothing would ever be the same again.

As they vanished into the shadows of Linhai City the artifact pulsed faintly as though quietly satisfied with the connection it had forged and the night was only just beginning.
