Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4; SHADOW OF LINHAI

The streets of Linhai City lay quiet in the small hours of the morning yet quiet never equated to safety and for Lin Yue the world had irrevocably shifted nothing in his life remained normal anymore as he could feel it in every heartbeat every breath something within him had awakened now tethered inseparably to Mo Chen in a manner impossible to ignore or deny.

He followed the taller man through narrow twisting alleys and deserted streets where the neon reflections of the city bounced off puddles like shards of broken glass and with every step the weight he carried felt heavier not from physical exhaustion but from the persistent strange pull between them the connection forged by the artifact now subtle yet unrelenting allowing Lin Yue to sense Mo Chen's presence lingering inside him as an echo a warmth and a tension he had yet to comprehend fully.

"You're unusually quiet" Mo Chen remarked from a few steps ahead his voice soft and teasing "usually humans complain panic try to run but you you just follow."

Lin Yue's jaw tightened as he replied "I don't panic."

Mo Chen laughed quietly low and dangerous the sound seeming to scrape across Lin Yue's skin and prompting an involuntary shiver he couldn't explain.

"You should" Mo Chen continued stopping near a side street while his crimson eyes scanned the surroundings alert to threats invisible to ordinary sight "this city isn't what you think it is there are things out there tonight things that will be drawn to you you don't know it yet but you're a target now."

Lin Yue swallowed hard and asked "Targets why I haven't done anything."

Mo Chen turned to him leaning casually against a wall one eyebrow raised as he explained "You don't understand people like you humans like you are extremely rare you carry something old something powerful and power always attracts attention not the friendly kind."

Before Lin Yue could respond the sound of footsteps echoed from the shadows a rhythmic purposeful tapping against wet asphalt that made him freeze in place.

Mo Chen straightened immediately the playful smirk replaced by something sharper almost predatory as he instructed "Stay close."

From the darkness three figures emerged moving with unnatural speed their forms humanoid yet twisted elongated limbs faintly glowing eyes and weapons that glimmered with an unnatural black sheen.

Lin Yue's pulse surged into his throat as he whispered "What what are they."

"Friends of the artifact" Mo Chen answered flatly "or enemies hard to tell sometimes."

The nearest figure lunged and before Lin Yue could even process the motion Mo Chen was already in action the world seeming to slow as he became a crimson blur against the dark night his sword flashing slicing through the air with a faint trail of red light that cut the first enemy cleanly in half before it could fully register the threat.

Lin Yue stumbled backward heart hammering while the bond the artifact had created pulsed sharply now a tug he couldn't ignore and when another attacker lunged toward him he felt an echo of Mo Chen's movement like a shadow of intention brushing his mind prompting his body to react instinctively ducking and rolling to evade the strike.

He froze staring at his own hands in disbelief realizing I moved because of him.

Mo Chen's voice cut through the chaos calm and teasing "Not bad you're learning fast."

Lin Yue's cheeks flushed despite the danger some inexplicable heat coursing through him whenever Mo Chen's voice touched his mind in that way.

The two remaining attackers regrouped circling like predators while Lin Yue became aware that his own pulse was syncing perfectly with Mo Chen's their breathing falling into tandem as his heartbeat thrummed in time with the crimson-eyed man's movements.

Mo Chen's sword sliced again forcing one enemy backward as he instructed "Stay close don't think move with me feel me."

Lin Yue nodded though understanding remained incomplete yet he followed the guidance his movements mirroring Mo Chen's almost automatically limbs flowing with a precision that startled him when the second attacker lunged he sidestepped and kicked at its knees destabilizing it allowing Mo Chen to follow through and finish the creature in one elegant decisive swing.

When the last figure attacked Lin Yue found himself instinctively raising a hand channeling a sudden unfamiliar energy as a faint glow emanated from his palm a tingling electric warmth that caused the attacker to freeze recoiling as though shocked before Mo Chen's sword descended with finality.

The street fell silent once more the attackers vanishing leaving behind only faint traces of black smoke and a lingering chill in the air.

Lin Yue staggered breathing hard as he murmured "I I did that."

Mo Chen's crimson eyes studied him amusement flickering across his sharp features while he confirmed "Yes that was you well partially the bond is strengthening you'll feel your energy intertwining with mine more and more as we go."

Lin Yue shook his head "I don't understand any of this what is happening to me."

Mo Chen stepped closer his presence overwhelming in a way Lin Yue couldn't explain as he replied "You're awakening Doctor that's all and awakening always comes with complications" tilting his head with the smirk returning "like being tied to someone who enjoys teasing you at every turn."

Lin Yue swallowed hard a strange heat rising to his face as he tried to step back yet Mo Chen's gaze pinned him in place while the bond pulsed again subtle but undeniable tugging at his chest and stomach in a manner he couldn't articulate.

"Why me" Lin Yue asked voice barely above a whisper.

"Because you're special" Mo Chen said softly his crimson eyes flickering with something unreadable "and because I don't let interesting things get away."

For a long moment Lin Yue simply stared at him mind racing as fear tension and something else something he refused to name tangled together inextricably.

A sudden noise metal scraping against concrete snapped his attention back to reality as a hidden figure darted from the shadows Lin Yue's instincts screaming yet this time he felt it differently the bond thrumming sharply with Mo Chen's presence surging into his awareness.

Without conscious thought Lin Yue reacted hands glowing faintly again as a warm electric surge coursed through him causing the figure to freeze startled while Mo Chen was already in motion sword flashing moving faster than the eye could follow until the fight ended in seconds the figure collapsing into a faint wisp of smoke and leaving the street eerily silent once more.

Lin Yue's knees buckled and he sank to the wet asphalt chest heaving mind reeling as he confessed "I can feel it I can feel you."

Mo Chen crouched beside him crimson eyes glinting with amusement softened by a flicker of curiosity as he affirmed "Yes you can that's the bond and it's only going to get stronger you're mine now whether you like it or not."

Lin Yue blinked swallowing hard "I I don't I don't like this."

Mo Chen leaned closer face inches from Lin Yue's the faintest scent of rain and something intoxicating clinging to him while he murmured "You'll get used to it or maybe you won't and that's fine either way it's fun to watch you try."

Lin Yue's heart raced a turbulent mixture of fear anger and something else entirely as he felt the energy pulsing between them the bond tugging at every nerve impossible overwhelming and terrifying yet beneath it all a strange unnameable thrill that made him ache in ways he didn't understand.

Mo Chen's smirk deepened as he said "Come on we should move the city doesn't sleep and neither do those who are watching you need to learn fast."

Lin Yue struggled to his feet chest tight eyes locked on the taller man despite everything despite the danger the confusion the strange overwhelming pull he followed because he couldn't not follow.

The neon lights of Linhai City reflected in the puddles as they disappeared into the night above the moon hidden behind clouds yet in the shadows the city remained alive with power danger and secrets neither could ignore.

And somewhere deep within him Lin Yue realized that the world he had once believed he knew the city his life his very sense of normalcy had ended the moment he stepped into that alley.

The night was only beginning.
