There was a soft knock on the door. He ignored it.
Yet it came again.
Theo lifted his head. The room was dark.
He had fallen asleep? How long had he slept?
The knock sounded once more, more desperate than the last.
Bartwick? He would recognise the knock anywhere.
What did he want? Was something wrong with the ball arrangements?
Christ! The ball arrangements…
He rose from the bed quickly, only to fall back on it with a heavy thud. It was almost as if someone had smashed a hammer through his skull.
And he was sweating…

The events of the afternoon came flooding in. She had left the room with tears in her eyes.
Could it be that she was hurt by something he had said…
The blasted knock came again.
"You might as well break the door down if the matter is so urgent, Bartwick." He called out, his voice muffled.
After a pause, the door opened and Bartwick came in bearing a tray.
