She wiped at her eyes hastily, surprised to feel moisture at the back of her palms.
"I wasn't crying. I just had something in my eye."
He smirked.
"Of course you did."
She turned away and decided to busy herself by opening the salve bottles and lining up the fresh bandages.
All the while, her entire body was stiff. They were so close…
Her shaky hands tipped the ointment bottle and it spilled on the tray.
"Good heavens." She whispered, stealing a sharp glance at him.
His eyes were closed and he was leaning his head against the window.
Was he alright?
"Theodore?"
"Are you done making a mess?"
Eve flushed crimson.
"I can hardly be blamed, I do not have any medical experience."
He slipped his right eye open for a split second before closing it back.
"I forgot that it is very difficult for you to ask for help, Lady Whitmore."
She met his gaze and glared at him.
"Even with a fever, your tongue is still as sharp."
