Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 – Into the Rabbit Hole, Part 8

Shouting and violent foot stomps filled the air along with the blaze of alarms and warnings from the many speakers in the facility. The sounds got louder and louder with each passing second.

Arthos, Kristan, and Wain closed their eyes tight and tensed their bodies expecting to be shot or violently captured.

To their surprise, a security guard rushed passed them without a single pause. A moment later three more guards flew by them. They looked at each other confused and somewhat relieved until an angry voice addressed them.

"What the hell are you doing? Can't you see we have an emergency! A monster is on the loose. Go over there! Grab a damn gun and help!" An angry security guard yelled as he pointed toward the weapons depot.

The trio obeyed the order.

As they ran to grab guns and weapons, they noticed countless workers running in different directions. The group reached the armory and grabbed random weapons and quickly followed the same direction as the other guards.

Screams, gunfire, shouts, and roars could be heard. The air quickly changed to a saturated smell of sulfur, gunpowder, smoke, and blood. Arms and legs of dead humans were scattered against the concrete painting it crimson red.

ROOOOAAAAAR!!!

The party immediately recognized the magic beast responsible for all this destruction…it was a dungeon jackal.

In Avalor, dungeon jackals were large ape-like creatures with heads similar to jackals and bodies covered in thick scales similar to armadillos. They were tough to kill and were normally found inside B-rank dungeons.

This dungeon jackal appeared wounded from a sword strike to the belly. The heroes from Avalor likely mistook it for dead and left it. The collection crew likely transported it back to earth where it likely woke up during dissection or experimentation.

The creature appeared enraged as it stampeded through the facility wrecking everything it encountered. Dozens of security guards fired thousands of bullets at it…but its thick scales were like reinforced Kevlar armor capable of withstanding the shots. It moved with the agility and speed of a cheetah…evading and attacking with ease. It quickly overpowered the guards, killing them quickly.

It grabbed one guard and ripped his head off, it smashed another into the floor killing him instantly, a third guard had his arm ripped off by a claw strike from the beast…the other guards suffered similar ends.

The trio took advantage of the chaos to search for one last crucial piece of evidence. Opposite the giant silos, they found an extremely large empty chamber filled with high tech machinery, computers, and monitoring equipment.

In the middle of the chamber stood a large glowing blue gate. The gate hummed and shimmered with an almost mist-like effect on the air that touched it. It stood as big as a three-story building and wide as a basketball court.

"Where is everyone?" Arthos whispered.

"I think everyone evacuated to somewhere safe." Wain replied.

"I guess this is Heaven's Gate." Kristan said with amazement as she looked at the giant gate humming before her.

"Let me check the logs." Wain said as he frantically typed on a nearby computer.

He scrolled and typed, scrolled and typed.

Occasionally saying "ah", or "oh", or "my god!"

Kristan and Arthos kept trying to interrupt Wain for details with no success. He was fixated on the screen in front of him.

10-15 minutes passed and the shouting and gunshots appeared to get louder.

"I can't explain everything to you right now," he said in a rushed voice.

He continued, "we were right…right about everything. This gate connects directly to Avalor. Do you see those thick cables? Those are network cables that connect earth's servers to equipment in Avalor…this is how the players from earth are able to connect to their avatars in Avalor!"

"The players do the work, kill the monsters, mine the crystals, and NAVA hauls the crystals through the gate to this facility. From here, they are sold around the world mostly for energy, R&D, and weapons development…hold on…what is this…wait…this doesn't make sense"

"What? What is it?" Arthos asked.

"Hey guys…I think we should get out of here." Kristan warned in a panicked voice.

Too late.

The dungeon jackal stampeded into the gate room followed by an army of guards firing every gun available. The jackal charged straight toward the group.

Without a second to think, Arthos shoved Wain and Kristan away from the charging beast. The dungeon jackal slammed into and tackled Arthos like a freight train sending him flying into the portal.

The beast continued to rampage in the gate room for another five minutes until it was finally killed.
