Chapter 1 - The Scholarship

The acceptance letter for college felt heavier than it should.

I stared at the gold seal on the envelope like a hundred times, unable to summon the courage to open it. My hands trembled slightly as I held it. On the top, it read: Ravenswood Academy. The name alone carried weight, prestige, and power. Everyone dreamed of getting in. Everyone but me.

I had prayed for this chance. A scholarship. I had worked harder than anyone I knew, sacrificing weekends, late nights, and every ounce of myself. And now, holding the envelope in my hands, I wasn't sure I deserved it—or maybe I did.

Taking a deep breath, I opened the letter.

"OMG!" my sister Iren yelled, jumping beside me and nearly ripping the envelope from my hands.

My eyes scanned the words I had been waiting to see:

You're accepted.

I couldn't believe it. I jumped, hugging Iren tightly, tears spilling down my cheeks. I had done it. I had earned my place here—not because of money, not because of influence—but because of me. My hard work. My determination.

For a moment, I let myself savor it. Then reality came crashing back.

A few days later, I stood before the towering iron gates of Ravenswood Academy. My heart pounded in my chest. The marble buildings stretched endlessly across the campus, gleaming under the sunlight. Students in perfect uniforms strutted past luxury cars, their polished shoes clicking on the reflective floors. Everything around me screamed wealth, control, and power.

And there I was… a scholarship student. Alone. An ant in a world of giants.

As I took my first steps toward the building, I noticed the whispers immediately.

"Look at her."

"She's so cheap, how did she even get in here?"

"She doesn't belong."

I lowered my head, clutching my bag tightly. Just ignore them, Emma. Stay calm. I repeated it like a mantra, trying to slow my racing heart. This was my chance to escape my past and build a future. I couldn't let a few privileged students ruin it.

The main doors opened before me, and I stepped into a hallway of polished marble floors and crystal chandeliers. Lockers lined the walls like sentinels, students moving between them with quiet authority, faces blank, eyes sharp.

And then I saw him.

He leaned casually against a row of lockers, dark eyes scanning the hall with an intensity that made the air around him feel electric. His black leather jacket was slightly wrinkled, messy hair falling into his eyes, a smirk playing on his lips that made it impossible to tell what he was thinking. The students around him gave him space, almost as if bowing to an invisible throne.

I froze.

That's him.

Liam Carter.

The boy everyone feared. The name carried whispers of danger and rumors I wasn't sure I wanted to believe. They said he had killed before, sold drugs, controlled the school like a king, and made even teachers wary of crossing him. And now… he was looking at me.

My stomach twisted. Emma, just ignore him. Stay away. It'll be fine. I told myself, though my mind knew the truth. Nothing would be fine. Not with him here.

His eyes locked on mine, and for a brief moment, it felt like he could see straight through me. My palms went clammy, my heart thudded painfully in my chest. I tried to look away, tried to pretend he wasn't there—but the pull of his gaze was magnetic, impossible to resist.

And then… he walked away. Smooth, confident, leaving behind a chill that settled over my skin.

I exhaled shakily, forcing myself to breathe. I had survived worse than a boy in a leather jacket. I could survive this too. I had to.

But deep down, a small voice whispered a warning:

This school isn't just a place to learn. It's a battlefield.

I had just stepped onto the battlefield… unarmed.

I wandered through the hallway, trying to blend in, feeling every eye following me. I had never been so aware of myself, so exposed, so small. Every laugh, every whisper, every glance seemed to be aimed at me, marking me as an outsider. The polished floors reflected the sunlight, but it felt more like a spotlight. I felt naked.

Then I caught sight of the other students—the ones who were going to shape my new life. They moved in groups, confident, almost predatory, whispering to each other, laughing softly, tossing glances my way. I tried to smile, tried to ignore it, but my heart kept reminding me: I didn't belong here.

The cafeteria loomed ahead, a sea of students eating, talking, laughing. I tried to keep my pace steady, telling myself again: Ignore them. Don't make a mistake. Just survive.

And yet, I couldn't shake the memory of Liam Carter.

There was something about him. Something magnetic, dangerous, terrifying… and oddly, fascinating. I knew I should stay far away. I knew I should avoid him at all costs. And yet, I had a feeling our paths weren't done crossing.

Not by a long shot.

I was here to start over, to chase a future I had worked so hard for. But already, I felt the weight of the battles ahead. And the first battle had only just begun.
