Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 – The Nature of Aether

The classroom had quieted after the last exercise. Torches flickered along the walls, casting long shadows across the wooden floor. The teacher's gaze swept the room, resting briefly on each student, measuring them with careful scrutiny.

"Today," the teacher began, voice firm and commanding, "we will learn about the nature of Aether and how to identify your abilities. Only by understanding your Aether can you hope to control it effectively."

Kael's grey eyes scanned the room, cold and calculating. Of course. The rules must be known before they can be broken.

The teacher continued, pacing slowly. "Aether flows through all living things, the land, and objects. Those who can wield it are called Weavers. Each of you have a specific type offensive, defensive, supportive, or rare natural affinity. Occasionally, a student's Aether will align with elements: Fire, Wind, Earth, Lightning, or Water. Such students are considered highly promising."

Kael's mind quietly cataloged the possibilities. Fire… Wind… flashy, rare, obvious. Not hard to exploit.

He turned toward the hovering crystal. "This crystal will respond to your Aether. Focus, and it will reveal the pattern of your power. From that, you will learn your type."

One by one, students stepped forward. Most failed entirely, because their Aether was weak or chaotic. Some produced flickers of light, but nothing remarkable.

Kael finally stepped forward. He extended his small hand toward the crystal. Instantly, the crystal shattered into hundreds of tiny fragments, each hovering independently in precise formation around him. He moved his fingers slightly, and the shards danced, weaving into complex patterns—some forming barriers, some spinning like miniature blades, others floating like tiny sensors.

The teacher squinted, frowning. "What… is this? Fragmented control? This is… inefficient. You lack raw strength. Your Aether is too scattered to be effective. I see no true potential."

Kael's grey eyes narrowed. You don't understand precision. Pathetic. He allowed the fragments to spin briefly before collapsing them back into the crystal with a faint motion. Not my concern. You'll see soon enough.

Lucien stepped forward next. His Aether formed sharp, blade-like arcs around the crystal, precise and deadly, but short-lived. The teacher nodded slightly.

"Control is… adequate, but you lack power. Your technique will never reach the level of elemental Weavers. You will need improvement before you can be considered promising."

Lucien smirked faintly, his dark eyes glinting, but he said nothing.

Then Alaric stepped forward. The crystal pulsed immediately, responding to his energy in smooth, flowing waves. Sparks of green wind danced along its edges, twisting and curling in controlled currents.

The teacher's eyes widened in surprise. "Ah… this is rare. You possess a natural affinity—Wind Aether. Exceptional for your age. You will be removed from your group and assigned to advanced instruction immediately. You have potential that must not be wasted."

Alaric blinked, glancing nervously at Kael and Lucien. "I… I was working with them."

Kael's small hand clenched, mind calculating rapidly. Lucien's jaw tightened, his gaze sharp.

The teacher's voice cut through the tension. "It's for your own benefit, Alaric. You cannot grow if your companions cannot match your level."

Kael's grey eyes locked onto Alaric's. Do you obey this fool? Or do you understand that we are stronger together?

Alaric hesitated, then slowly shook his head. "No. I'm staying. If they can't grow, I'll help them. That is… my choice."

The teacher frowned, a hint of frustration in his voice. "Bold… but foolish. Very well. Loyalty will be your first lesson. Those who cannot follow orders will fail."

Kael allowed a faint smile. Good. The first real test. Let's see how far this trio can bend the rules before the world even notices.

Lucien leaned slightly toward Kael, whispering, "So, we're officially… troublemakers."

Kael's eyes glinted. "Troublemakers who survive… and win."

For the first time, their bond was tested—not by combat, but by choice. Loyalty over fear. And Kael already knew the world was underestimating them.
