Chapter 81 – The First World
The door inside the Memory Tree opened without making a sound.
Beyond it was darkness.
Not the ordinary darkness of an empty room.
There was no floor, no ceiling, and no sense of distance.
It was as if the door had opened into a place where space itself had never been created.
Evetyl stood at the entrance.
She could hear her own breathing.
Behind her, the First Keeper remained silent.
The child held onto the edge of her sleeve.
"Evetyl..."
"I'm going."
The child looked nervous.
"I know."
"You don't have to follow me."
The child shook its head.
"I've waited too long to let you go alone."
Evetyl smiled.
"Then stay close."
The child nodded.
Together, they stepped through.
The door closed behind them.
For several seconds, Evetyl felt nothing.
Then—
Her feet touched grass.
She opened her eyes.
The darkness was gone.
A vast blue sky stretched above her.
A warm sun shone over a green valley.
Birds flew between distant mountains.
A river flowed through the center of the land, reflecting the sunlight.
Evetyl stared.
"This..."
The child stepped beside her.
"It's a world."
"No."
Evetyl slowly looked around.
"It feels different."
The child nodded.
"This is the first one."
Evetyl couldn't explain the feeling.
She had traveled through countless worlds.
She had seen cities between dimensions, impossible landscapes, broken timelines, ancient beings and places that shouldn't have existed.
But this world felt...
simple.
There were no massive cities.
No strange creatures.
No visible magic.
Just grass.
Trees.
Mountains.
Water.
A peaceful world before history had become complicated.
Then Evetyl noticed something.
There were no people.
Not one.
She turned toward the First Keeper.
"You said this was the first world."
"It is."
"Where is everyone?"
The First Keeper looked toward the horizon.
"They haven't been created yet."
Evetyl frowned.
"What?"
"This is the beginning."
A strange sound suddenly came from behind them.
Footsteps.
Evetyl turned.
Someone was walking toward them.
A girl.
She looked about Evetyl's age.
Long dark hair.
Simple clothes.
No weapon.
No armor.
No supernatural aura.
She looked completely ordinary.
Yet Evetyl's heart immediately started beating faster.
The girl stopped several meters away.
She looked at Evetyl.
Then smiled.
"I've been waiting for you."
Evetyl stared.
"Who are you?"
The girl didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward the child.
"You brought it with you."
The child stepped behind Evetyl.
"Don't talk to her."
The girl's smile disappeared.
"You still don't trust me."
"Should I?"
The girl looked at Evetyl.
"That's for her to decide."
Evetyl took a step forward.
"Tell me your name."
The girl smiled again.
"My name..."
She paused.
"...was Evetyl."
Evetyl froze.
The child immediately shook its head.
"No."
The First Keeper remained silent.
Evetyl looked at it.
"Is that true?"
The First Keeper slowly nodded.
"Yes."
Evetyl looked back at the girl.
"You were me?"
"Not exactly."
"Then what were you?"
The girl looked toward the peaceful valley.
"The first version."
Evetyl couldn't speak.
The girl continued.
"Before you were Evetyl Clarke..."
"...I existed."
"Why?"
"Because something had to remember the first world."
Evetyl looked around.
"You're the First Memory."
The girl smiled.
"The first."
A cold feeling entered Evetyl's chest.
"Then what happened to you?"
The girl's expression became sad.
"I made a mistake."
"What mistake?"
"I wanted everyone to live."
Evetyl stared.
"That's not a mistake."
"It became one."
The girl walked toward the river.
Evetyl followed.
"When the first world was created, it was perfect."
"Nothing died."
"No one suffered."
"No one forgot."
"There was no war."
"No fear."
"No loneliness."
Evetyl looked at the peaceful land.
"So what went wrong?"
The girl touched the river.
"The world couldn't grow."
Evetyl frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"If nothing changes..."
"...nothing becomes meaningful."
The girl looked at her reflection.
"People need choices."
"Choices create mistakes."
"Mistakes create pain."
"Pain creates memories."
"And memories create meaning."
Evetyl slowly understood.
"A perfect world couldn't truly live."
The girl nodded.
"So I changed it."
"You created suffering?"
"I created choice."
She looked at Evetyl.
"And suffering came with it."
The child quietly asked,
"Then why did you become the Last Memory?"
The girl looked at it.
"Because I couldn't accept what happened."
"People started dying."
"Worlds started ending."
"And I remembered every single one."
"Every death became part of me."
"Every goodbye stayed inside my mind."
The girl closed her eyes.
"Eventually..."
"...I couldn't carry it anymore."
Evetyl's voice softened.
"So you split yourself."
"Yes."
"Into what?"
The girl looked directly at her.
"Into everyone who came after me."
Evetyl's eyes widened.
"You mean..."
"Every version of you."
"Every Evetyl."
"Every life."
"Every possibility."
"They all carried a small piece of my memory."
The First Keeper finally spoke.
"That was how the First Promise survived."
Evetyl looked at him.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
"Because you weren't ready."
Evetyl sighed.
"That's everyone's favorite answer."
The child laughed quietly.
Even the First Keeper smiled.
For a brief moment, the strange world felt peaceful again.
Then—
The sky changed.
The blue disappeared.
A massive black line appeared across the horizon.
The First Keeper immediately turned.
"No."
Evetyl noticed his expression.
"What?"
"It found us."
The girl who had once been Evetyl looked toward the sky.
Her expression became serious.
"The King of Oblivion."
The black line widened.
The sun disappeared.
Birds fell from the sky.
The river stopped flowing.
The entire world became silent.
The child grabbed Evetyl's hand.
"He's coming."
Evetyl looked toward the girl.
"Can he enter this world?"
"He can't."
"Then why are you afraid?"
"Because this isn't the real world."
Evetyl frowned.
"What?"
The girl looked at her.
"This is the memory of the first world."
"If he destroys it..."
"...he can destroy the memory of how everything began."
The First Keeper raised both hands.
Golden light spread across the valley.
"We need to leave."
Evetyl shook her head.
"Not yet."
"Evetyl."
"I need to know what happened."
The girl looked at her.
"You really are stubborn."
"I've been told."
The girl laughed.
For a second...
Evetyl felt like she was looking at an older version of herself.
Then the girl reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small white flower.
Evetyl recognized it immediately.
The same kind of flower she had carried earlier.
The girl handed it to her.
"This was the first one."
Evetyl carefully accepted it.
"What does it mean?"
"It means..."
The girl's voice became quiet.
"...someone chose to remember."
The black sky suddenly cracked.
A golden eye appeared.
The King of Oblivion had found them.
The First Keeper stepped forward.
"Go!"
The child grabbed Evetyl's arm.
"Come on!"
But Evetyl didn't move.
She looked at the golden eye.
Then at the first Evetyl.
Then at the flower in her hand.
She finally understood something.
The King wasn't trying to kill her.
It wasn't trying to destroy Crosshaven.
It wasn't even trying to erase the Memory Field.
It wanted one thing.
The beginning.
Because if the beginning disappeared...
Everything that came after it could be rewritten.
Evetyl tightened her grip around the flower.
"You're not taking this."
The King spoke.
"Evetyl Clarke."
Its voice shook the entire world.
"You do not understand what you are protecting."
Evetyl looked up.
"Then explain it."
"You are protecting a mistake."
"Maybe."
She took a step forward.
"But it's our mistake."
The King became silent.
Evetyl raised the flower.
"And that means we get to decide what happens next."
For the first time...
The golden eye narrowed.
The First Keeper smiled.
"Now you understand."
The child looked at Evetyl.
"Understand what?"
Evetyl stared at the sky.
"The First Promise wasn't about remembering the past."
She slowly closed her fingers around the flower.
"It was about protecting the future."
The entire world shook.
The King of Oblivion began pushing through the sky.
The First Keeper raised his hands.
The girl who had once been Evetyl stepped beside Evetyl.
The child stood on her other side.
Three generations of memory stood together beneath the first sky.
The First Keeper shouted:
"Now!"
Golden light exploded across the valley.
The King roared.
The sound shattered mountains.
The river rose into the air.
The sky split into thousands of pieces.
Evetyl felt something enter her chest.
Not pain.
Not power.
A memory.
A single memory.
She saw every version of herself.
Every Evetyl who had lived.
Every Evetyl who had died.
Every Evetyl who had made different choices.
Every possible life.
Every possible ending.
And among all of them...
One person appeared again and again.
Kai.
Different in every timeline.
Sometimes a friend.
Sometimes a stranger.
Sometimes an enemy.
Sometimes someone Evetyl had never met.
But always...
He remembered her.
Evetyl opened her eyes.
"Kai..."
The first Evetyl looked at her.
"You finally saw it."
"Saw what?"
"Why he was chosen."
Evetyl's heart stopped.
"Chosen for what?"
The girl smiled sadly.
"To find you."
The Memory Field began collapsing.
The child screamed.
"Evetyl!"
The First Keeper looked toward the opening portal.
"We have to go!"
Evetyl turned.
The first Evetyl was already disappearing.
"Wait!"
She reached for her.
The girl smiled.
"Don't worry."
"But you're disappearing!"
"I was always going to."
"Why?"
"Because you came back."
Evetyl froze.
The girl touched her forehead.
"Now I can finally rest."
Evetyl's eyes filled with tears.
"Will I remember you?"
The girl smiled.
"Not all of me."
"But enough."
Her body became thousands of glowing particles.
Before disappearing completely, she whispered:
"Find Kai."
Evetyl stared.
"Why?"
The final words reached her.
"Because he remembers the one thing you were forced to forget."
The world exploded into light.
Evetyl opened her eyes.
She was back in Crosshaven.
Kai was kneeling beside her.
"Evetyl!"
He grabbed her hand.
She stared at him.
For several seconds...
Neither spoke.
Then Kai laughed in relief.
"You're back."
Evetyl looked at him.
She wanted to say something.
Anything.
But a single question came out.
"Kai..."
"Yeah?"
"How long have you known me?"
Kai's smile disappeared.
He looked toward the traveler from the future.
The traveler slowly lowered his head.
Kai turned back to Evetyl.
"I don't know."
"That's not true."
Kai's eyes widened.
Evetyl squeezed his hand.
"I remember seeing you."
"In different worlds."
"In different lives."
Kai stared at her.
"And I remember..."
Evetyl's voice became quiet.
"...you promising to find me."
Kai didn't answer.
Because he remembered it too.
The traveler stepped backward.
His face had become pale.
"Evetyl..."
She looked at him.
"You knew."
The traveler remained silent.
"You knew about Kai."
Still nothing.
Evetyl stood.
"You knew everything."
The traveler finally looked into her eyes.
"I knew enough."
"Then tell me the truth."
He took a slow breath.
"The reason Kai remembers you..."
"...is because he was there when the First Promise was made."
Evetyl froze.
Kai stared at him.
"What?"
The traveler continued.
"You weren't alone when the first world ended."
"You were holding Kai's hand."
"And before you erased your memories..."
"You made him promise something."
Evetyl's voice trembled.
"What?"
The traveler looked at Kai.
Kai slowly began remembering.
His eyes widened.
And then he whispered the words.
The same words from the vision.
"If you forget me..."
He looked directly at Evetyl.
"...I'll find you again."
The ground beneath Crosshaven suddenly shook.
The golden key in the Curator's hand shattered.
The sky opened.
And somewhere beyond the worlds...
Something ancient awakened.
The First Thought looked toward the stars.
Its expression became one of pure fear.
"No..."
The Eye asked,
"What is it?"
The First Thought slowly answered:
"The promise has been completed."
A pause.
"Now..."
"...the person who made the promise is coming."
To Be Continued...
